Rules Q&A
- Q: Interrupts are subject to the rule of location. So, if, at the time of the action's announcement, the personality with Flame's Protection isn't at the battlefield, AND the unit they're targeting isn't at the current battlefield, you can't use it. so, I think FP just doesn't work against Harpooning. because there's no scenario in which the action works, and FP is online.
A: I did describe a scenario where it does in my first answer. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 1 Nov 2025 - Q: [ShE] If during battle my opponent uses Kampeki to harpoon one of my personalities from home to the current battlefield, can I prevent that with Flame's Protection?
A: Depends. Is the Shugenja Fire and at the current battlefield and Kanpeki is harpooning your samurai? If so, yes. Otherwise, no.
(Replying to a player: "Now, what would happen if I had one or more units at the current battlefield. Would I be able to use Flame's Protection since I would have presence?") Still no. Rule of Location. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 1 Nov 2025 - Q: I have a follow up question. If my opponent uses Overwhelmed and I have only one personality in the battlefield, can I use Flame's Protection to negate the action? Since I have only 1 personality, Overwhelmed's effect is obviously going to affect it... or the fact that Overwhelmed doesn't target still prevents that spell from being used?
A: Nope. The restriction on FP is that the action has to be targeting the Shugenja already at the Interrupt step, from having done so in the Choose targets step. But Overwhelmed doesn't target your Shugenja until effects. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 20 Jun 2025 - Q: If you mean the Sensei, then no, because the effect comes from a trait being triggered. As for "To The Next Generation", the Fear in the Battle action does have required targeting of an opponent's Personality at the battlefield, if I recall the description of Fear properly. As a non-Interrupt, non-Response action, you can use the Interrupt on Flame's Protection to negate it.
A: (Replying to a player: "So, if it comes from any trait being triggered I cannot interrupt, right?") You can only Interrupt or Respond to actions; moreover, only actions that are not themselves Interrupts or Responses. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 25 Apr 2025 - Q: [ShE] Follow up question... if I have one personality at the battlefield, my opponent uses Kanpeki's battle to move my shugenja at home to that battlefield, can I use flame's protection (the spell is attached to my shugenja at home) in that scenario? I now have presence, even though is via another personality
A: Presence isn't the issue; Location is the problem. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 21 Apr 2025 - Q: [ShE] I have a Shugenja at home with Flame's Protection attached, then, during a battle, my opponent who is attacking (I have no presence in that province) uses Kanpeki Wind's battle to move my shugenja to the battlefield. Can I use Flame's protection to negate that or do I need to have presence to use that interrupt? So far I know, interrupt triggers always once their conditions are met and Kanpeki targetting my shugenja meets the spell condition
A: Interrupts in cards in units without "Home" or "Remote" can't be used at Home during battle. Interrupts and Responses are bound by the Rules of Presence and Location.
(Replying to a player: "So if during the open my shugenja is targeted for a duel, I cannot use flame's protection either?") The Rules of Presence and Location are only active during battles. EDIT: I edited my first answer to add more specifics, but some were implied given the question. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 21 Apr 2025 - Q: Quick question: Can I destroy Flame's Protection as part of its own effect or do I need to destroy another fire spell?
A: You can destroy itself. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 27 Jan 2024 - Q: Quick question about Interrupts. If an Interrupt is on a card in play, it can't be used if it's outside of a battle, right? So for example, if I use a Battle action to harpoon someone with Flame's Protection at home, can they interrupt? Or how about if it's Yaheiko Sensei?
A: Cards in units need Home or Remote to use their abilities outside of the battlefield. Yaheiko is not in a unit, and therefore doesn't. However, in both cases, if you don't have presence at the battlefield before the Harpoon, the Interrupt would additionally need Absent to use it.
