- Her trait causes her entire unit to be considered in the current battle, not just herself. [Reversal, JA, 4 March 2004] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 88
Rules Q&A
- Q: If I got Otaku with a follower in a battle, my opponent casts Kuro's Fire with Agasha Chieh and destroys the follower can I use Otaku's ability to kill Chieh ?
Kuro's make consecutive ranged attacks so I think that Chieh must declare each one at the time, resolve it and go on.
The problem is what if Chieh wanted (made) only 1 ranged attack ? Can I use the ability ?
A: It won't change anything. The destruction is part of resolving the effects of the Kuro's Fire Action. That makes it part of "casting," and any Reactions before / when / after that destruction are still during resolution of the Action's effects, and thus Chieh is still casting. She's still at the battle for Otaku to destroy her.
Of course, killing Chieh doesn't stop the rest of Kuro's Fire's Ranged Attacks from resolving if you have more coming your way. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 December 2004", 25 Dec 2004 - Q: Agasha Chieh (Experienced) Her trait causes her entire unit to be considered in the current battle, not just herself. [Reversal, JA, 4 March 2004]
Does this mean that when you take actions with her she is considered in the battle because of the trait and therefore has presence in the battle or for the purpose of her and anything attached to her, her unit has presence when it performs an action if there is another unit present but is not part of the battle.
A: I don't quite understand what you are saying here.
Look at Chieh's text: "During battles where you control other units, Chieh may cast Spells as if she were in your army regardless of her location."
While Chieh is casting a spell, you can have her unit be considered to be at the battle if you have any other units at that battle, even if Chieh is normally positioned in your home or a different battle.
At any other time, Chieh is considered to be wherever you put her. Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 December 2004", 10 Dec 2004 - Q: Haru can't be considered to be in both places at once.
so this is an ability only Agasha Chieh has mastered then? what's the difference between her trait and the Eye of Iuchiban's as far as this case is concerned?
A: Agasha Chieh XP hasn't mastered the art of being in two places at once either. In regards to using her ability to cast from your home, she's completely at the battle while casting and completely at home when she's not.
Chieh can't ignore the rules and use a hypothetical "Reaction" spell that specify "opposing" cards in battles other than the current one either.
Nor can Chieh ignore the Rule of Relevance and cast "Kuro's Fire" on victims in Battle B while resolving Battle A, even if you have units at both battles and her ability would let her be considered to be at either battle of your choice while casting. Martin Lund, "Rules for 1 and 2 November 2004", 5 Nov 2004 - Q: Both say "as if...", but Agasha Chieh has been ruled to be "in the army/at the battle" for all purposes including for the purposes of Isawa House Guard while I understand that Hitomi Dojo has been ruled to not make the personality a Monk for any purpose beyond the abiltiy to cast the kiho.
A: If you could cite some specific example, I might be able to be of more help.
Both effects last while the caster is casting. Once that is done, he or she is back as she was. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 October 2004", 24 Oct 2004 - Q: Also, what if Agasha Chieh has Emergence of the 5 Masters attached, and is at home. I have 2 Shugenja at the battle, and 3 others at home. When Chieh casts Emergence, how many of the Shugenja can assist her?
A: Chieh can't be in two places at once. While casting at a battle via her trait, she is not considered to be in your home. Only Shugenja in the same battle can participate in a Ritual she is casting there, as per page 90 of the Rulebook. Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 July 2004", 13 Jul 2004 - Q: - My opponent has Agasha Chieh with Kuro's Fire in play, as well as a Ring of Air ; he casts KF, i react with Flee ; can he straighten Chieh with the Ring of Air ?
A: Chieh is still bowing to pay the cost of casting the Spell, so he can straighten Chieh with the Ring. All the Ring cares about is why she bowed, not that she was successful. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 June 2004", 30 Jun 2004 - Q: Are there any instances where Battle Actions on personalities do not require the personality to be at the battle (EXCEPT for obvious instances like Agasha Chieh)?
A: Just about every Battle Action that fulfills the Rule of Relevance without using the words "opposing" or "in this battle" will qualify. Martin Lund, "Rules for 1 May 2004", 4 May 2004 - Q: If Shiba Yoma is in a battle and an opposing unit moves out or in, can I Taut Bowstrings and use a ranged attack from a personality with a spell outside the battle?
Ditto with Agasha Chieh exp.
A: Taut Bowstrings is actually a pretty messy card in terms of clear rulings. I'm going to say, "Yes," on both these questions, but I could see it going the other way if Jeff wanted to. Those units are considered opposing when they cast their spell to make their Ranged Attack, so they should be as eligible as anyone else when you check to see if the move is legal. Martin Lund, "Rules for 30 April 2004", 3 May 2004 - Q: If agasha chiehs unit counts as being in a battle for the brief instance she is casting the spell does she count as moving into that battle for that brief instance?
A: No. Moving is an effect. Chieh xp. does not generate any such effect. Chieh does not go there, she simply IS there.
If you want to get all shaved-scalps and tattoos about it, Chieh does not move about the Universe. Instead the Universe moves about her. ;-)
(No, that doesn't mean you can Slaughter the Scout the Universe. The last part was just philosophical rambling for pure entertainment value.) Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 April 2004", 13 Apr 2004 - Q: Here goes:
I'm attacked by a player who has say 6 peeps one of which is Ashura. I block with Danjuro and leave Chieh at home. For my first action I go crazy with Chieh and Kuro's Fire for 20+ points. With one of my ranged attacks I kill Ashura who then targets and destroys Danjuro. I have some number (let's say 10) of points left to assign as ranged attack. Do I get to continue my action or is Chieh finished because I don't have presence?
A: Presence and Relevance are required to take the action, and Chieh only needs another unit there when she casts the Spell. Once that is done, its effects are set in motion. The rest of the Spell proceeds as normal. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 March 2004", 26 Mar 2004 - Q: The trait of Agasha Chieh Exp. causes her entire unit to be considered in the current battle, not just herself. This is a REVERSAL.
Jeff,
How does the trait, allow followers attached to Chieh outside of a battle to bow and perform a range attack or peasant vengence, or fear effect. If Chieh had an item on her that allowed her to perform a FEAR effect, would she be able to perform this fear effect in every battle?
Can Chieh act as an ally, without actually going to battle or having presence?
Perhaps this reversal is a little too far, or we are misunderstanding the full extent of this ruling?
A: Her trait only applies while she is casting a Spell. The ruling isn't changing THAT aspect of her trait at all. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 March 2004", 6 Mar 2004 - Q: I've got this strange idea forming in my mind :
Agasha Chieh XP is considered in an army when she cast a spell. That's how she works, but what is the status to the cards in her unit?
They're not.
And what is her status (is she an attacking unit?)
If you are the Attacker or an attacking ally.
Practical exemple where this can matters : She is played out of Castle of the Wasp, does the *insert name of a Range Attack Spell here* is considered an attacking card while she cast it.
No.
I'm pretty much confused here. Sometimes I like to play devil's advocate for the rules game, but I'm actually befuddled right now.
Please point out any flaws in the following reasoning: 1)The instant I declare that I'm using Agasha Chieh's trait for cast as if she were in the battle, she then becomes in the battle for all intensive purposes other than moving into the battle.
A: "Intents and purposes". But, yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 2-3 March 2004", 4 Mar 2004 - Q: I've got this strange idea forming in my mind :
Agasha Chieh XP is considered in an army when she cast a spell. That's how she works, but what is the status to the cards in her unit?
A: They're not. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: Assuming that there is a legal way to generate a ranged attack from a card that is not at the battle (I don't know that there is one, the only thing I can come up with is Agasha Chieh casting Kuro's Fire) could that ranged attack be used by a CoW player to reduce the enemy's province strength?
A: Not if it is not making a ranged attack as though it were in that battle, no. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 27 Feb. 2004", 28 Feb 2004 - Q: What is the logic in it? A card says can cast spells as if it was in the battle and the other says: "When a Shugenja IN your army...." how can they interact?
Bowing is part of casting a Spell. Chieh can cast a Spell as if she were in an army.
So, by that standard, if I am attacking and Chieh exp has Kuro's Fire attached and sitting at home, I can play break the line and target her?
A: You can't play it for its Battle action and target either her or her Spell. She is not in the middle of casting a Spell just then, so her trait doesn't apply.
You can play it for its Reaction when she casts that Spell on cards in your army, but that has nothing to do with Chieh's trait. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 9 Feb. 2004", 10 Feb 2004 - Q: Agasha Chieh can cast spells into the battle from the outside and I've heard a ruling that you can unbow her with Isawa House Guard because she is ,sort of, into the battle while casting it.
Correct.
Does the same hold for any other Shugenja when Shiba Yoma (exp) is in the current battle?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 9 Feb. 2004", 10 Feb 2004 - Q: Chieh XP has a Jade Yari and Kuro's Fire attached. Since she can cast Kuro's Fire outside of a battle, can she boost one of the ranged attacks by combining it with the Yari?
A: No (Diamond rules, pg. 90). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 December 2003", 18 Dec 2003
