Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Chasing Osano-Wo 0G 3FV Thunder • Kiho. Battle: Bow your target Shugenja or Monk at any location: Give a target Personality a Force bonus equal to the Force of the performer plus the Personality's own Personal Honor." Rules Q&A
- Q: I was pretty sure about what was considered relevant and what wasn't until recently. Can a monk at battle A cast Chasing Osano-Wo on a personality at battle B? On that same stream of logic, can a monk at battle B use Flee the Darkness for an action taken at battle A?
A: Flee the Darkness is a Reaction. It is not affected by the Rule of Relevance at all, as that applies only to Battle and Open Actions.
As for Chasing Osano-Wo, your example is fine so long as either Battle A or Battle B is the current battle. Chasing Osano-Wo is targeting both monks, after all. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 October 2004", 19 Oct 2004 - Q: 2. Togashi Satsu is attacking province A; Egg of Satsu is attacking province B. We resolve province A first:
2a. Egg of Satsu casts Sharing Strength on Satsu at province A. 2b. Satsu then casts Chasing Osano-Wo back to the Egg at province B. 2c. Egg of Satsu then casts Chasing Osano-Wo back to Satsu at province A.
Was 2b a legal play? It seems to satisfy Presence and Relevance, though Satsu at province A just happens to not bow when he casts the kiho.
A: Kiho target their casters, and that's enough to satisfy Relevance if the caster is at the Current Battle, accord to page 81 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 October 2004", 11 Oct 2004 - Q: Hitomi Daisetsu, with Reichin's Helm attached, casts Chasing Osano-Wo on himself.
I *think* the timing is: Bow, Reichin's Trait, Chasing's Effects; so Daisetsu is 2F Base, +1F Reichin (printed), +1F Reichin's Trait, +6F Chasing (Daisetsu's 4F + 2PH).
A: Yup. Reichin's Helm triggers after all costs are paid and targets chosen, but before any Effects are produced. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 April 2004", 22 Apr 2004 - Q: Here are some question that I would like some answers to that came up over the past week or so during some games.
1. If I have a Satsu out who's bowed..and since the card reads "need not bow to cast Kihos" can he still sling kihos like Chasing Osano Wo? If I remember correct cards that are bowed..their abilities are "turned off"..like even though the new Kaneka card doesn't have to bow to use his abilities..if he's bowed he cant use his abilities right?
A: You can't use an Action on a card or stronghold which is bowed. That means Limited, Battle, Open, or Reactions. That does not do anything to Traits. Satsu has a Trait that lets him cast without bowing. It is always "on."
And as for casting ...
"Kiho can be cast by bowed Personalities if the kiho or Personality does not require bowing (e.g., Togashi Satsu, Experienced). [JA, 15 September 2003]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Kiho") Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 April 2004", 4 Apr 2004 - Q: Small question about chasing Osano-Wo. Can you cast in on a peep in a battle with a shugenja at home?
A: As long as you have at least one unit in the current battle, yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: For the Ring of Air, if I have Ryoshun's First Gift on a Personality, and I play, for example, a Chasing Osano-Wo using that personality to cast the Kiho, and bow Ryoshun's First Gift to prevent the personality from bowing, does that count as a casting of a spell for the purposes of playing Ring of Air?
A: Yes. Both Chasing Osano-Wo and Ryoshun's Last Words are cast. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 Feb. 2004", 26 Feb 2004 - Q: Can I bow any of my shugenja in any location for chasing osano-wo? If not, what is the extent to which I can bow for it?
A: Chasing Osano-Wo is a Battle action with no built-in restriction that the caster has to be in the current battle. It follows all the normal rules for Battle action legality: you can do it if
You have at least one unit in the current battle, AND
the caster OR the target is in the current battle. [DE pp. 80-81] Jeff Alexander, "rules for 10 Feb. 2004", 11 Feb 2004 - Q: If Hitomi Daisetsu casts Chasing Osano Wo on himself and I wish to play Overconfidence in response, would it be legal for me to pass on my opportunity to play a reaction, wait for my opponent to utilize Daisetsu's reaction, and then play the Overconfidence?
A: It's not only legal, it's mandatory that you wait. You CAN'T do it in the other order. Costs are paid before effects happen in L5R, so a Reaction to a cost (Daisetsu) must come before a Reaction to an effect (Overconfidence). Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 Feb. 2004", 6 Feb 2004 - Q: can a bowed monk cast kiho's like Chasing Osano-Wo or Sharing Strength while it has Takao's Gingasa attached (assuming its the first kiho its casting this turn).
A: Yes (http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/#Kiho). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 December 2003, Part 2", 12 Dec 2003 - Q: How long does the effect of Chasing Osano-Wo last?
A: Diamond Edition rules, pg. 70, in bold type: end of turn. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 24 November 2003, Part 2", 25 Nov 2003 - Q: if he casts Chasing Osano Wo on himself, does he get 8F [2F + 2PH + 4F bowed = 8] or 10 [4F + 2PH + 4F bowed = 10]?
A: 10. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 9 November 2003", 9 Nov 2003 - Q: Player 1 attacks player 2, assigning to attack provinces A and B. Player 1 resolves Province A. Player 1 is allowed to cast a kiho (such as Chasing Osano-Wo) from a personality in Province B to affect a personality in Province A. Are they allowed to do the reverse? (Have a personality in Province A cast a kiho to affect Province B)?
A: Yes (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 53). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 October 2003", 22 Oct 2003 - Q: I trust Kansuke can also using Chasing Osano-Wo and Purity of Spirit?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 October 2003", 2 Oct 2003 - Q: A few questions about targeting :
* Can my monk cast Chasing Osano-Wo on himself ?
A: Targets are chosen before costs are paid. Therefore, actions that require bowing a card can typically be played on the card that's going to bow. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2003", 3 May 2003 - Q: Second question on Hoshi Chuichi. Relevent text: Chuichi gains +2F/+2C while bowed. If Chuichi is casting Kihos whose effects depend upon his stats (ie. Chasing Osano-Wo or Facing Your Devils) do we check his stats before or after he bows?
A: If bowing is the cost, then after, since costs come before effects. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 December 2002", 12 Dec 2002 - Q: How about these:
A monk outside the battle can cast Chasing Osano-Wo on a personality in the battle?
A: As long as you have a unit in that battle, yes. You have Presence if you have a unit in that battle. You have Relevance if the caster or the target is in that battle. This is the way it's always worked. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 September 2002", 19 Sep 2002 - Q: Sorry, my last question regarding the Ring of Earth wasn't phrased quite right let me give a better example. Player B has province strength 6. Player A assigns a 6 force unit to attack player B's province 1. Player B defends with Togashi Hoshi. Player A resolves provinces 2, 3, and 4 (both players pass, no provinces destroyed). Player A resolves province 1, player B passes. Player A uses superior tactics to move his unit to province 2. Player B has Hoshi cast Chasing Osano-Wo which gives player A's unit a 7 force bonus. Because province 2 has already been resolved player A's unit returns home bowed at the end of the attack phase. Is the Ring of Earth playable as a result and, if so, when?
A: It is not playable. The only time the Ring of Earth can be played is immediately after a battle ends, and it regards only the attacking army Force and Province strength at that battle from the beginning of the attack to that point. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 June 2002", 7 Jun 2002 - Q: This got me thinking.... There was a ruling way back when... It was for Hoshi Maseru. The ruling was "bowing was the last thing you do when resolving an action." This was so that Maseru (who unbows after casting kiho) could target himself with Chasing Osano-Wo. If that ruling still holds then, technically, Higatsuku itsn't bowed until the duel is over. Bring back Shosuro Tech and Face Me!
A: The ruling is not that bowing doesn't happen until after everything else. The ruling -- now a rule, on page 46 -- is that, for any action, targets are chosen before costs are paid. Thus a Shugenja or Monk can target himself with a bow-to-cast Kiho. Sadly, Maseru will still be bowed while his own duel commences. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 2", 8 Apr 2002 - Q: Chasing Osano-Wo vs Final Sacrifice. If I play the first card and my opponent plays the second as an interrupt. The interesting thing is that Chasing doesn't seem to have a cost block, because all the text is after the colon. Therefore it appears to me that both the bowing the monk/shugenja and the force bonus to the second target are both effects. In a game, my opponent played Sacrifice and claimed to redirect only the second effect to target his Yojimbo. But the action has two targets. Why is my opponent allowed to redirect the second targeting effect in preference to the first? It seems to me that it may not be legal to play Sacrifice in response to Chasing because his Yojimbo isn't a monk/shugenja and chasing states it doesn't work if his person isn't a legal target?
A: The constraints block was removed in Ivory, just FYI, but as to your question.... ...."the action targets [the yojimbo] instead of another card, if legal." It's the opponent's Interrupt, so they get to choose which "another card" of the two Chasing is targeting its substitution effect applies to.
