Rules Q&A
- Q: If I play a Surpirse Attack http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=7665 during an Ambush http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=344 / Chikushudo's Trickery http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=1323 what happens?
As Ambush / Chikushudo's Trickery do not create an Attack Phase (nowadays), is the battlefield created by Surprise Attack resolved at all? If yes, is Attacker / Defender the same as in the Ambush / Chikushudo's trickery battle, or does it depend on who's turn it is?
A: I have clarified the Final Steps of the battle sequence, to make it clear that another battlefield is always picked, if there are any, not just during an Attack Phase. Alex Jones, "Surpirse Attack + Ambush / Chikushudo's Trickery", 20 Sep 2013 - Q: Chikushudo's Trickery Open: Choose one or two of your performing unbowed Nonhuman Spirit Personalities, target another player's unbowed Personality, bow this Shugenja, and destroy this card: Create a battlefield. Shiba Sansesuke Reaction: When an action would target your Shugenja at Sansesuke's location, bow Sansesuke: The action targets him instead, if legal.
Ok, I'd like to know, if Sansesuke can jump in front of shugenja targeted by Chikushudo Trickery and take it on himself? I see a few possible options in her: 1) He can redirect this action on him, and will assign to attack bowed 2) He can redirect this action on him, but will not assign as he is bowed as cost of redirecting 3) He cannot as "another player's unbowed Personality" is required and in moment of redirecting Sansesuke is already bowed because this is a cost -> Target shuggie with CT, SS uses reaction, bows and is not legal target. It's a bit unclear to me now, so I'd be grateful for answer.
A: The redirect fails for the reason you give in 3) - Chikushudo Trickery requires an unbowed target, and Shiba Sansesuke must bow as a cost of his action. Alex Jones, "Chikushudo Trickery vs Shiba Sansesuke", 13 Nov 2012 - Q: I have out:
Tamori Kusugi (Personality) with the ability: "Battle: Even if Kusugi is not at the current battlefield, bow him: Raise or lower the current battlefield's province's strength by 4."

If I have personalities at the Battlefield created by Chikushudo's Trickery, can I use Tamori Kusugi's ability (For instance, to get another Battle Action for Ring of Water), or does the lack of a province make his ability use illegal?
A: It's legal.
Kusugi's ability does not target the province, or otherwise refer to the province in the constraints block: the only thing that would stop you using his ability would be if you had no units at the current battlefield. Alex Jones, "Effects that refer to provinces in battles without one", 4 Jul 2012 - Q: Follow up to this.
Can Kitsune Kohaki announce Chikushido's Trickery, choosing only Kohaki to assign to the battle, bow to pay the cost of the card, and not assign to the battle because Chikushido's Trickery does not specifically allow you to ignore the rule that you may not assign bowed cards to a battlefield?
A: Yes, for the reason stated. Alex Jones, "Chikushudo's Trickery", 12 Apr 2012 - Q: If I announce the action on Chikushudo's Trickery, can I target another player's personality first(so I can see if he changes the target) before choosing my nonhuman spirits? Or do I follow the order written on the card?
If my caster of Chikushudo's Trickery is a nonhuman spirit shugenja, can I choose it as the personality to enter the battle bowed(since it payed the cost of bow this shugenja)?
A: You must follow the order listed on the card.
Because of this, you may choose the performing Shugenja even tho he will be bowed as part of the cost. Jon Palmer, "Chikushudo's Trickery", 9 Apr 2012 - Q: Greetings folks,
I am currently working on a Kitsune deck. I have seen a couple that I like but I am trying to put my own spin on it. My question is, if I target an opponents personality with Chikushudo's Trickery, are they able to use them in an attack later? My thought on this is based on the Second-Battle Rule from the wiki.
Related Text Second-Battle Rule: Before a unit that was in an attacking army at any point during a battle’s resolution moves to a battlefield during the same Attack Phase, the unit’s movement does not happen.
Chikushudo's Trickery: Open: Choose one or two of your performing unbowed Nonhuman Spirit Personalities, target another player's unbowed Personality, bow this Shugenja, and destroy this card: Create a battlefield. Negate all movement to it. Assign the target to attack there; he will not be destroyed during the battle's Combat Segment. Assign the performing Spirits to defend there. Fight a battle there.
A: Note the Second Battle Rule only limits movement during the same Attack Phase.
Chikushudo's Trickery only creates a battlefield, not an Attack Phase. Even if Trickery created a separate Attack Phase, it would still be different from the "main" Attack Phase, and the targeted Personalities would still be able to move in to battlefields there.
