Rules Q&A
- Q: Apparently there is a question that has been posted on some websites about using P'an Ku to copy the oni trait from an oni in play, then use the mask of the maw to copy Pan Ku's ability:
Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used.
Then the next step is that P'an Ku uses his ability to copy the ability from the non-dragon (technically his own ability), and then this gives him an additional ability of the same type. Then you continue to do this, only using the new ability you gain to copy it again and again until you have an infinite number.
Once you feel you have enough of these stacked abilities, you can use these abilities to then copy the -1 chi ability on Chimamire no Oni (for example) and destroy P'an Ku to basically chi death any legal targets of the opponent.
Is this true? Do the abilities stack, or is it the same ability that is trying to be reused over and over? If these are seperate abilities then is this immune to same old tricks? It is all rather confusing.
A: Each copy is a brand-new ability, distinct from all others.
However, you won't be able to use any but the very last one you create to copy any other abilities until the next turn, since they all have the "once per turn" restriction and have already been used.
It looks perfectly legal - not necessarily a good idea, but legal. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 January 2005", 21 Jan 2005 - Q: Chimamire no Oni hands out some -1 Chi loving to Moto Chagtai until his chi is 0.
Moto Chagtai now has 0 chi and has no penalties that will wear off at or before the end of the turn.
Does Chagtai die now or at the end of the turn?
A: This one gave me a headache the first time around, but I remember Jeff's clarification:
You only check for Chi Death with Chagatai nonexp. at the time when effects would expire at the end of his controller's turn - regardless of whether or not there are any penalties that would expire at that time. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 December 2004", 8 Dec 2004 - Q: 6) Now for the fun ones. I have Chimamire no Oni in my dead pile (and I'm playing Spawning Grounds). I have one token on Summon the Dead attached to a shugenja. I then announce my target for Summon the Dead (the oni) and pay costs (bow the shuggy and remove a token). At that point, the spell's trait triggers and all personalities I have targeted with the spell are destroyed. so... Does the Chimamire no Oni then get destroyed before returning to play, thus triggering his reaction (after all, his reaction can only be used when he's in the dead pile anyway)?
A: You can't destroy cards that are already in the Discard Pile. Such an effect is Negated. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 November 2004", 30 Nov 2004 - Q: 8) If Chimamire no Oni is used twice in a turn, can I Same Old Tricks the card (as he's in the dead pile)?
A: No. The general rule is that cards that are not in play can't be targeted. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 73). Since there are plenty of instances where you can use the Same Old Tricks against a target card that IS in play and Same Old Tricks does not give you an explicit exemption, you can't use it against any card that is NOT in play - including any "Normal" Action Card (the ones that don't enter play) or an Action played from a card that isn't in play. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 November 2004", 30 Nov 2004 - Q: Can you search for the same oni that you destroyed to activate the Shrine of Fu Leng? Example: Destroy Chimamire no Oni and bow Shrine of Fu Leng, grab the same Chimamire no Oni and return him to play.
Effects that let you to search for a particular card (e.g., Walking the Way) do not target the card. [JA, email, 19 January 2001; 23 July 2001; ML, JA, email, 19 October 2004]
A: That should cover it. You don't target the Oni you bring back with the Shrine, only the one you destroy. You can restore the same oni you sacrificed. Martin Lund, "Shrine of Fu Leng", 27 Mar 2005 - Q: firstly during my opponent's attack phrase he played circle of steel as a terrain(.) i kill Chimamire no Oni and thus triggering his reaction.
do i get to throw the -1C token on my opponent's personality if he has a weapon attached to him?
A: If the Oni is dying on your turn, then no, such Personalities could not receive tokens. Placement of the tokens targets.
(Edit: Correction.) Zen Faulkes, "more questions", 27 Mar 2005 - Q: Quote:

Yes. Circle of Steel comes info effect "When the battle ends." Destroying cards is part of the Resolution Segment -- battle's not over yet.
i was trying to mean after the battle resolution, during my phrase where i do all my limited and open action phrase?
A: Then such Personalities could not receive tokens. Zen Faulkes, "follow up on more question", 27 Mar 2005 - Q: From Death of Ryoshun:
"Until the beginning of your next turn, actions on the cards with that title may not be used."
Does this also refer to actions copied from that card?
Does it affect identical actions on cards with other names?
Examples:
P'an Ku copies Saemon's ability to react to being targeted. Saemon is named with Death of Ryoshun. Can P'an Ku still use the reaction?
Chimamire no Oni is named with Death of Ryoshun. Then Personality Bob uses Mask of the Maw to copy Chimamire no Oni's ability (after Death has been used). Can Bob use the Chimamire's ability?
Bob has the ability "Battle: Bow for a ranged 3 attack"
Fred also has the ability "Battle: Bow for a ranged 3 attack"
Bob is named with Death of Ryoshun. Can Fred not use his ability because he has the same action as one on the card named Bob?
Thanks,
Leon
A: No. No. Zen Faulkes, "Death of Ryoshun clarification", 17 Mar 2005 - Q: hello. Sorry again! i have one question to ask about soul of the clan. firstly here is the printing that is on soul of the clan.
Quote:
Reserve Formation Formed by 2 bowed Personalities at your home. You may play this card without Presence. Battle: Target a bowed Personality at your home that has not been in an army this attack, and a bowed Personality at the enemy leader's home. Straighten both targets, even if they cannot straighten. Move your Personality, and the other player's (if he wishes), to the current battlefield.
here's the question. assuming my opponent has no unbowed personalities at his home and all of them are defending in another Province and i have bowed personalities at home. can i use the ability to move juz my personalities into the battle and not my opponent 's?
i know this maybe stupid but i'm asking a question that someone has asked. but just to present the steps clearly to you. juz wondering if it's allowed to do the pan'ku's infinite copy. the ability of p'anku that is used is shown as below.
Quote:
Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used.
during your opponent's turn, p'anku copy the oni trait from one of your onis.
during your turn, you attach mask of the maw to any personality.
Quote:
Open: Bow the Mask and target an Oni Personality to copy all actions on that Oni onto this Personality until the end of the turn. If you wish, until the end of the turn, the Oni may not use any of its actions.
and bow the mask to open p'anku's copy ability. and after that you just use p'anku's ability to copy the copy ability from the mask. thus by doing this, it's like this,
first turn, copy oni
turn 2, bow mask to copy the copy ability(thus give mask the copy abilities)
turn 3, use p'anku's ability to copy the copy ability from the mask. (so p'anku has 2 copy ability)
turn 4, use p'anku's second copy ability to copy the the copy ability from the mask again( p'anku nw has 3 copy ability) and u continue doing this until you have enough.
next, using all the copy abilities that p'anku has, you use the last ability that u have copied to copy Chimamire no Oni's reaction.
Quote:
Reaction: If your Stronghold is the Spawning Grounds, after Chimamire no Oni is destroyed, put a -1C token on up to two Personalities.
so in short from just now,
turn 4, use copy ability 3 to copy the reaction.
turn 5, use copy ability 2 to copy the reaction.
turn 6, use copy ability 1 to copy the reaction again.
turn 7, kill p'anku.
thus triggering the reaction and killing everyone on the opponent 's table.
thanks for taking time to read my post and making the necessary time to do the typing. thanks once again.
A: Guessing you mean "bowed" here, as that's what SOul of the Clan look sofr. Zen Faulkes, "Soul Of The Clan/pan'ku", 15 Mar 2005
