Rules Q&A
- Q: Nobumoto Exp Open: Once per turn, Nobumoto gains the Cavalry trait and loses the Naval trait.
I use Chizuko to remove Naval from my opponents Nobumoto. He then tries to give Nobumoto Calvary. I think that is an illegal action. There is no cost:effect with this action or it would be obvious, such as, Remove Naval:Gain Calvary. Does Nobumoto need to have Naval in order to use this action?
A: Not at all. As you said, there is no cost vs. effect on the card. Both instructions (gain Cavalry, lose Naval) are effects. Having some or all of the effects of an action be Negated / Fail does not make an Action illegal. As long as you have a valid target, pay all costs, and abide play restrictions (like "Once Per Turn" on this ability, or Presence and Relevance for Battle Actions) you shouldn't have any legality problems taking an Action.
So, the fact that Nobumoto has no Naval to lose doesn't hinder his ability one bit. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 October 2004", 25 Oct 2004 - Q: Player A has a Chizuko and several other naval personalities, one of which is a shugenja, in play and is involved in an attack against Player B. Player B plays a terrain when it's his turn to play an action. Player A then uses Chizuko's ability to give the terrain the Naval Trait. Player B Passes. Player A then bows his shugenja to cast swallowed by the sea to bow the terrain.
A: OK, you have a bowed Naval Terrain. Being bowed won't have much effect on a given terrain, however. They tend to have continuous effects that give other cards or players abilities, rather than have activated abilities themselves which would be rendered unplayable due to being bowed. Being bowed won't stop a delayed terrain from resolving its effects either. It has already been played. Martin Lund, "Rules for 23 April 2004", 25 Apr 2004
