Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Chrysanthemum Festival Each player gains a Province to the left of their leftmost Province." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 69
- Clarified: the extra Province is added on the left. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 11
- Q: I'm playing Dragon Clan, and I've had a couple of my provinces destroyed, so they're at a province strength of 9. The event Chrysanthemum Festival pops up, and everybody adds a province. Does my new province have a strength of 5 or 9? A: Five. The Dragon ability refers to your "remaining provinces." This new province wasn't around when your other provinces got the bonus to their strength, so it has the unadjusted province strength of 5. The Imperial Herald, Vol. 1, Issue 1, p. 11
- Q: And when the Festival goes off, where does the new province get added? A: On the left. The effect of this ruling is to ensure that the new province is filled with a face-down card, which doesn't turn up until the next Events Phase. The Imperial Herald, Vol. 1, Issue 1, p. 11
Rules Q&A
- Q: If you end Chrysanthemum Festival with Shrine of the Sun, A) does everyone blow up their leftmost province? or B) Is a player "safe" if the created province has already been destroyed?
A: Neither. As noted above, Chrysanthemum Festival has no on-going effects. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 May 2004", 27 May 2004 - Q: Here's another one: We celebrate a Chrysanthemum Festival and gain another province. Can Heimen Laborers be used to fill that new province face up, or not, since the laborers can only be used when "refilling" a province, and the province has never had anything in it to begin with. (Now that's a semantic splitting of hairs!)
A: It may be used. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 March 2004", 26 Mar 2004 - Q: 1) If Shrine of the Sun is used to cancel Chrysanthemum Festival and your opponent only has one province left, would he immediately lose the game?
A: No. The Province is not an "ongoing effect". It will not go away. Jeff Alexander, "post for 27 March 2003", 28 Mar 2003 - Q: Shrine of the Sun : "Limited: Bow and destroy the Shrine of the Sun to target an event card in play or in any discard pile. End all ongoing effects of that card. Shuffle the Even back into its owner's deck. If you have not resolved that Event this game, the Event no longer counts as having resolved this game. "
My opponent's Chrysanthemum Festival went off earlier. He's now at one province. Can I Shrine his Festival to win if I've made sure that the one left is the one the Festival gave him?
A: No. Gaining a Province is not an ongoing effect. You do not gain a Province constantly for the rest of the game -- you only gain it once. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: Shrine of the Sun reads: "Limited: Bow and destroy the Shrine of the Sun to target an event card in play or in any discard pile. End all ongoing effects of that card. Shuffle the Even back into its owner's deck. If you have not resolved that Event this game, the Event no longer counts as having resolved this game. "
A couple questions: 1) If I target my opponent's Chrysanthemum Festival, could it resolve a second time, granting another province to all players?
A: Any Event that YOU have not resolved yet this game is "washed clean" by using the Shrine of the Sun on it. This means it will resolve the next time it appears in anyone's Province as though it hasn't resolved at all yet -- even if the same opponent or teammate reveals it this time and an earlier time. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 February 2003", 1 Mar 2003
