Rules Q&A
- Q: Cant find any other topics on this and i have been away from the game for a while.
Can a player react with Akodo Kakihara's reaction when targeted with a ranged or melee attack to potentially avoid being destroyed? (example, a ranged 6 vs a 4F kakihara would react to become 8F)
IF yes, does this ruling change if the ranged/melee attack is redirected to Kakihara with Chugo Seido?
A: Kakihara's Reaction triggers after the targeting, before the destruction effect of the Ranged Attack. If his force after the bonus is greater than the Ranged Attack's strength, he will not be destroyed.
Chugo Seido reacts "When an action would target", which is just before the targeting actually occurs. Kakihara reacts after the targeting, so there is no timing conflict. Alex Jones, "Akodo Kakihara vs ranged/melee attacks", 1 Feb 2013 - Q: After reading the text of Koshin keep: Recon Reaction: After engaging: You have Reconnaissance at the current battlefield. Until this battle ends, your Ranged Attacks that do not destroy their target have the additional effects, "reduce the target's Force by the Ranged Attack's strength and you may take an additional Ranged Attack Battle action that may only target the same card".
Does the part thay I marked as bold mean that any other target would not be legal? Would that mean that only the first ranged attack (in the case that you should chain more than one to kill a personality/follower) would be allowed to be redirected with Ryoshun's, Benten, Chugo Seido, etc.?
Thanks in advance
A: Correct. Follow-up ranged attacks may not be retargeted in this situation. Jon Palmer, "Koshin Keep and redirection", 7 Oct 2012 - Q: Just to clarify on Palmer's rule here:http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=98083 , if I had two redirection effects used (i.e. Ryoshun's Guidance and Chugo Seido) Can I use both to have them target a samurai with no attachments? Thanks!
A: No, because each retargeting is an individual effect, and therefore each is individually illegal. Jon Palmer, "Red Hunger And Ryoshun Guidance", 13 Jul 2012 - Q: Hi there. Apologies if this has been covered. I can't seem to find the thread.
Power of Strength: Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Personality with 7 or higher base Force and target two enemy Personalities, each with unit Gold Cost lower than your performer's Gold Cost: Bow one of them. Ranged Attack with strength equal to the first target's Force, which may only target the other Personality (if legal).
versus
Ryoshun's Guidance: Reaction: When another players action would target one of your cards, discard this card: Choose another of your non-Stronghold cards at the same location. The action targets it instead, if legal.
Chugo Seido: Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your Personalities, destroy this card: Choose one of your Samurai at the same location. The action targets him instead, if legal.
Based on the rules of playing an action and targetting, here is the scenario:
1. I announce Power of Strength in battle 2. I choose my performing unbowed personality 3. I choose two enemy target personalities 4. My opponent announces a reaction (Chugo or Ryoshun) to redirect one of the targets. 5. The redirection resolves and I confirm the two targets as final 6. When resolving Power of Strength, I get to choose which of the two targets is bowed (not my opponent). Is this correct?
Thank you very much for your attention.
A: You are correct, as the choice of which to bow happens after both have been targeted and re-targeted. Jon Palmer, "Power of Strength versus Ryoshun's Guidance/Chugo Seido", 26 May 2012 - Q: Ok, here is the situation. I have Heir's Wrath, and I intend to destroy a card my opponent controls that costs 7 gold. I have all the gold ready, and I have a 5+ force personality to bow. My opponent is going to use Chugo Seido as a reaction, and redirect this to a 9 gold personality, instead of the 7 gold I initially targetted.
So, how much gold do I actually pay? What if I choose not to destroy the 9 gold personality, how much do I pay? When is it paid?
Also.... if I choose not to follow through, do I have the option to not pay costs, and thus never bow my 5+ force personality, or pay any gold at all?
We found a few older references, but none that specifically cover a card like this wording. The question is really do you pay the 7 gold cost up front, and then that is the lokced in amount that this action can target... so does this mean Chugo Seido can then ONLY redirect to a legal target, which means one that costs 7 gold or less? And if it DOES then redirect to a 9 gold target (if legal) do I have to bow any gold or personalities at all if I choose to just not pay enough costs for it to work?
The Heir's Wrath
Limited: Target another players Personality, pay Gold equal to his unit's total Gold Cost, and discard the Imperial Favor or bow a Personality with five or more Force: Lose 2 Honor and destroy the target; these effects will not be negated.
Chugo Seido
Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your Personalities, destroy this card: Choose one of your Samurai at the same location. The action targets him instead, if legal.
A: Per the steps of taking an action (here), required targeting comes before paying costs.
So, before you pay at all, you target the Personality you intend to kill. If you opponent changes that target, then he has changed the basis for the cost that you intended to pay when you Announced the action in Good Faith, so we refer to this section of the above:
"From the point when the action is announced legally to the point where the individual cost is required, if payment of any of an action’s mandatory costs is interfered with, the player taking the action may choose to pay the costs another way, or choose not to pay the cost....
Sometimes an action, trait or card has a mandatory cost with a variable value, and this value depends on an element of the game that another player’s' effect interferes with at some point between announcement and the point when the cost is paid.
Example: An action’s Gold cost depends on the total Gold cost of a target unit. After announcement but before costs are paid, a card is added to the unit or the targeting of the unit is changed.
When the basis for a cost that depends on targeting changes due to interference with targeting, this is treated the same way as interference with the payment of the cost."
So, since your payment was interfered with, you may choose to pay the new 9 Gold Cost or not, and choose to bow the Personalty/discard the Favor or not. Brook Cunningham, "Heir's Wrath and payment of costs... timing...", 22 May 2012 - Q: Kitsuki Yataku reads:
Political Reaction: After an action targets a target Samurai, bow Yataku: The Samurai's controller may not choose to refuse any challenge created by the action.
Wording on Chugo Seido and Ryoshun's Guidance is: "Before another player's action would target...". How do they interact with Yataku, if at all? Can they be used to redirect Yataku's action, or will the redirection just fail? If they can redirect the action to a new target, will it matter, since the controller of the new target will still be my opponent, and thus he will have to accept?
It is my turn, and I announce an action that creates a challenge and I target a Samurai. Since I may take reactions to targeting first, I bow Yataku to force my opponent to accept. Then, my opponent uses his Ryoshun's Guidance to redirect my action to a non-Samurai Personality. Does the non-Samurai Personality have to accept the challenge as well? I believe so, but I would like to be sure.
What happens if it is my opponent's turn? Does he get the first opportunity to react (and redirect via Ryoshun's Guidance to a non-Samurai), and so I lose my opportunity to use Yataku?
A: "Would" is simply used to make the tenses correct. "Before another player's action would target..." will always happen before "after an action targets". Therefore no matter whose turn it is, the Ryoshun's will always trigger first, and if it moves it to a non-samurai Yutaku's reaction may not be taken as there is no longer a valid trigger. Jon Palmer, "Kitsuki Yataku + redirection", 17 Apr 2012 - Q: In regard to this question/answer: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=96323&p=1273215&hilit=kahoku#p1273215
I must respectfully disagree with the answer. Yes, the effects are separate, and if a card redirected ranged attacks then it would only work with the second half of Kahoku’s ability. But, the card in the question used as an example is Chugo Seido. Chugo Seido reacts to targeting, which is done before the force reduction and long before the ranged attack.
If I am wrong, please explain in detail as I am training to be a head judge and need to be able to explain these things clearly. Thank you.
A: You are wrong, but only as of Emperor Edition if that's any consolation.
Since all required targeting has been moved to constraints as of Before the Dawn, targeting for Ranged Attacks as of EE is no longer required. It occurs in effects, just before resolving the Ranged Attack effect, so it would in fact be after the targeting for, and application of, the Force penalty from Kohaku's ability.
From Ranged Attack: "Ranged Attack targeting occurs during action resolution and so is not required. In other words, a Ranged Attack’s target or targets need not be legal or exist in order to announce the action." Brook Cunningham, "Bayushi Kahoku exp. vs. Redirection", 10 Mar 2012 - Q: If one of my personalities have been targeted with Kahoku's battle action, can I change the target of the ranged attack to be a different personality than the force penalty (with something like Chugo Seido for example)?
Bayushi Kahoku Battle: Target an enemy Personality: Give him -4F. Ranged 3 Attack.
Thanks!
A: The force reduction and the ranged attack are two completely separate (and separately targeted) effects. You may use Chugo Seido to redirect either to a different target (and Kohaku's controller need not target the same card with both effects). Jon Palmer, "Bayushi Kahoku Experienced vs Redirection", 21 Feb 2012 - Q: I get that outer walls, Chugo Seido, Imperial command etc can't be used and that's cool, but can you save them with Duty or Akodo Senichi?
A: No, Duty and Senichi react during the action's resolution, when the destruction from the Ranged Attack occurs.
In fact, as the poster below points out, you are currently INCORRECT under CE Rules in that you actually CAN react with Outer Walls, Chugo Seido, and Imperial Command. Those react to targeting, which occurs before the action's first effect (the one that prevents Reactions) is applied. Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Aroru", 8 Aug 2011 - Q: If my opponent targets a personality with an action performed by one of his personalites and I redirect with Chugo Seido (or some other form of redirection) to a paragon personality with more personal honor, will I be able to react with Iron Will?
A: Yes, you may. Even though you are changing the target your opponent chose, he is still considered to be doing the targeting. Brook Cunningham, "Iron Will + Chugo Seido", 5 Jul 2011 - Q: A Walking Death reads...
Until the game ends, after each of your Events Phases ends, each player, starting with you, gives a target Personality controlled by the player on his left a -1C Plague token.
Your opponent "targets" one of your personalities with a -1C Plague token, so it would stand to reason that you could redirect the the token from the targeted personality to another legal target via Chugo Seido, deflection, etc. Am I wrong?
A: Chugo Seido reacts when an action would target a card. It does not react to traits. Alex Jones, "Redirecting chi tokens from A Walking Death?", 31 May 2011 - Q: I know there are a lot of threads regarding Shinjo's Guidance and other redirection effects (such as Chugo Seido) redirecting to illegal targets. The replies that I have read do not seem to agree on whether it is legal to take such an action when there are no legal targets or if the action is legal but has no effect.
For example: I my opponent tries to use a ranged attack against one of my unicorn personalities without followers. I react with Shinjo's Guidance but all my other personalities at that location have followers (so there are no legal targets for the ranged attack).
Am I allowed to take this action knowing that the effect will fail, is it somehow illegal because I'm messing with targeting, or is there some other option I have not considered?
A: It is likely that the variation is because the individual cards are worded differently. There are no general rules an "redirection" - those were killed several editions ago.
As for Shinjo's Guidance, I found only two relevant rulings, both of which say the same thing: The action is legal to take, even if it has no effect.
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81737 viewtopic.php?f=59&t=86267
I take the opportunity to mention this: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Substitution: "In effects that substitute targeting, if the new target has to be a 'legal' target, then failure to find a new legal target means the original targeting happens normally." Zen Faulkes, "Shinjo's Guidance and illegal targets", 24 May 2011 - Q: I attack with Hida Kuon (exp 6.)and another samurai. My opponent defends and his first action targets Kuon and the effects would kill him or the samurai. I re-direct the action to the other samurai with Chugo Seido, and the samurai dies. Is Kuon's trait now 'active' ie the effects of the next action that targets him will not happen? I think it does work this way as the re-direction from Chugo Seido happens before targeting of Kuon occurs, but I'm not 100% sure.
Relevant Kuon text - If Kuon is the only Personality in his army, before the resolution of the enemy leader's first action that targeted Kuon this battle: Its effects do not happen.
Chugo Seido - Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your Personalities, destroy this card: The action instead targets one of your Samurai of your choice at the same location, if legal.
Cheers,
Neil.
A: Note that Hida Kuon exp6 has been errata'd: Kuon's trait now reads, "After the first time each battle another player's action targets Kuon: If he is the only Personality in his army, the action's (remaining) effects do not happen." [technical erratum, 12 August 2009]
Anyway, Chugo Seido reacts at the time "when an action would target", and changes that targeting; the original target is not considered to have been targeted by that action. Alex Jones, "Hida Kuon (Exp 6)and Chugo Seido", 5 May 2011 - Q: My opponent plays Shameful and Cowardly at a battle, targeting my personalties, A&B. I react with a redirection ability(say Chugo Seido) to redirect the targeting of B to A, thus hitting A with the effect twice?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_T#Targeting: "When multiple targets are chosen simultaneously, the same target cannot be chosen twice. This also means that when one target out of multiple, already-chosen targets is being changed, another one of those already-chosen targets cannot legally become the new target.
"Example: If you target a Samurai and a Shugenja simultaneously, another player cannot change your targeting of the Samurai to target that Shugenja, because you have already chosen the Shugenja for the same targeting. " Zen Faulkes, "Shameful and Cowardly and redirection", 18 Mar 2011 - Q: (W)hat is the difference between Concentrated Fire and Dramatic Assassination?
A: I'm assuming you['re referring to this FAQ question: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#What_happen ... ld_cost.3F
Concentrated Fire affects who is targeted; the FAQ on Dramatic Assassination concerns costs (which is not just gold payment, but any kind of cost).
Selection of targets and performers always comes before cost payments, and they have different rules because of that (see http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... performing). Zen Faulkes, "Concentrated Fire and Chugo Seido", 14 Mar 2011 - Q: Crab player have two scouts in play Hiruma A with 3F and Hiruma B with 4F. Lion player also controls two personalities, Akodo C with 2F and Akodo D with 3F. Crab announces Concentrated Fire, chooses to bow A and is going to destroy target C. Lion player reacts and would like to use Chugo Seido to redirect this action for D. Is it possible?
Concentrated Fire 4 GC Open: Bow one or more of your performing Scout Personalities: Destroy a target enemy Follower, or Personality without attachments, with lower Force than your Scouts' total Force.
Chugo Seido Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your Personalities, destroy this card: The action instead targets one of your Samurai of your choice at the same location, if legal.
A: No. Akodo D is not a valid target for Concentrated Fire when performed by Hiruma A because he doesn't have lower force than the Scout's Force; Chugo Seido cannot redirect the target to him. Alex Jones, "Concentrated Fire and Chugo Seido", 14 Mar 2011 - Q: I have 3 lions in play, one of them was targeted by The Direct Approach. My opponent has Mizuhiko basic in play, and declares an attack. As a Naval action, he attaches In Aikune's Name, and uses it, destroying the two samurai that could perform actions. Can I use Chugo Seido to redirect the targetting?
A: Assuming all the "Lions" in question are samurai with no attachments...
By targeting two Personalities, In Aikune's Name is targeting the "one" Personality required by Chugo Seido (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Special_wording ... _of_things). So Chugo Seido is fine.
The Direct Approach is irrelevant here as far as I can tell, since neither In Aikune's Name or Chugo Seido concerns performance. Zen Faulkes, "In Aikunes Name + Chugo Seido", 1 Jun 2010 - Q: Is the redirection legal?
A: No. The new target must fulfill ALL the requirements of the original target in order to be legal. In your example, the new Samurai does not because he has a Follower. Brook Cunningham, "Chugo Seido vs Utogu no Oni", 28 May 2010 - Q: How does it resolve?
A: You may still choose to take the reaction, but if you have no new legal target the effect will fail and the targeting won't be changed. Brook Cunningham, "Chugo Seido vs Utogu no Oni", 28 May 2010 - Q: Will it destroy the follower or the whole unit?
A: Neither. Brook Cunningham, "Chugo Seido vs Utogu no Oni", 28 May 2010 - Q: If not, can Chugo Seido redirect the action to the follower, not the Personality?
A: If the Follower has the "Samurai" keyword, as is a requirement of Chugo Seido. However, no CE-legal Followers do. Brook Cunningham, "Chugo Seido vs Utogu no Oni", 28 May 2010 - Q: Hello,
In relation to this ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=83240 ; is it legal to have Chugo Seido redirect the targeting of Samurai Personality A by the player who uses Burn the Village on Samurai Personality B which is also targeted by the same player and Burn the Village? Providing that both Samurai are of course at the same location.
Chugo Seido says: Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your personalities, destroy this card: The action instead targets one of your Samurai of your choice at the same location, if legal.
Burn the Village says: Limited: Each player may target one or two Personalities, each of whose base Gold Cost is equal to or lower than his controller's Stronghold's Gold production plus two. Destroy the targeted personalities. Remove all of them that are Shadowlands from the game.
A: No.
Glossary, Targeting: When multiple targets are chosen simultaneously, the same target cannot be chosen twice. This also means that when one target out of multiple, already-chosen targets is being changed, another one of those already-chosen targets cannot legally become the new target. Alex Jones, "duty vs burn the village", 30 Apr 2010 - Q: Some redirecting cards:
Chugo Seido Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your personalities, destroy this card: The action instead targets one of your Samurai of your choice at the same location, if legal.
Imperial Command Reaction: When an action would target your Unique Personality, pay 2 Gold: The action targets another of your Personalities instead, if legal.
a) One of my personalities is being targeted by a ranged attack. Can I redirect it to another personality who has a follower, or is blocked by the "if legal"? If it can be redirected, what happens? b) One of my personalities is being targeted by ruthless advance. I redirect it to a much expensive unit, and my opponent doesn't have enough gold to pay for the new target. What happens?
Extra question: c) Can Bayushi Hirose target a bowed dishonored personality opposing him, just to make his controller lose 2 honor?
Thank you!
A: A) Targets must be legal, you cannot change targeting of a ranged attack to a personality with a follower unless the ranged attack could target a personality with followers (e.g. Strategic Strike) B) See the FAQ. Generally your opponent will choose to discard the card without effect, rather than bowing out all his gold for no effect. C) Yes, he can. Remember, effects can fail. Dan Jacobson, "Redirection and Targeting and Paying costs", 21 Apr 2010 - Q: I have face down Ninjutsu personality. My opponent targets another personality, and I want to use Chugo Seido to redirect to the facedown person, who is a samurai when flipped over. Can I target the facedown to flip him over, becoming a legal target? I would think no, because I would have to target a samurai first.
A: Good Faith Rule demands that a face up Samurai Personality you control be present before you can use Chugo Seido's ability. Dan Jacobson, "Timing, targeting and Ninjutsu", 16 Apr 2010 - Q: The second case is if the target is redirected to another unit using Deflection or Chugo Seido. I believe the player using Yoritomo Tatsuhiko's action would get to decide whether or not to pay the cost of the new target after the redirection occurs because the redirection occurs during the cost block. Is this correct?
A: Same as Dramatic Assassination: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#What_happen ... ld_cost.3F Zen Faulkes, "clarification on Yoritomo Tatsuhiko", 7 Feb 2010 - Q: Question 1: If I announce my intentions to play dramatic assassination targeting personality X, and my opponent uses his Chugo Seido to misdirect it to personality Y, am I than to allowed to choose not to pay the costs of Dramatic assassination and allow the action to fail, or do I have to pay the full cost of the action.
Question 2: Assuming I am not allowed to simply allow a misdirected action to fail, I have the abiltiy to produce 10 gold, and I attempt to Dramatic Assassination an 8 gold cost unit. My opponent uses his Chugo Seido to misdirect Dramatic Assassination to his 12 gold cost unit. Am I still forced to bow my ninja as a cost of Dramatic assassination?
A: This is the first appearance of the Celestial Edition FAQ, I think:
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#What_happen ... ld_cost.3F Zen Faulkes, "Dramatic Assassination and Paying costs", 12 Jul 2009 - Q: hey there
assuming i have a bowed samurai who has heavenly daisho of the dragon attached and chugo seido in play. my opponent has a shugenja with touch of death.
my opponent now announces touch of death and beginns to set targets for required targeting. my bowed samurai gets targeted.
i use chugo seido to redirect the action to himself. due to being targeted in the constrains block my samurai performed the action. after the action resloves i use the reaction on heavenly daisho of the dragon to unbow my samurai's unit.
E. ACTION RESOLUTION If all targets are met and costs are paid, apply the action’s effects in the order they are mentioned. Touch of Death: Destroy a target bowed Personality with equal or lower Chi than this Shugenja.
now my question is this: does it make any diffrence that my samurai isn't bowed when the effects are applied or will he still get killed?
thanks in advance
A: EDIT: See Ruling Below Dan Jacobson, "Heavenly Daisho of the Dragon + Chugo Seido + Touch of Death", 12 Jul 2009
