Rules Q&A
- Q: Seriously, I've been wondering why this stronghold isn't immune to fear, given its basic nature. Someone on the SL list suggested it was because Daigotsu, in "civilizing" the SL, has made them vulnerable to things like fear (and regret? Sorrow? Even love?! Onis walking along, hand in hand...er, claw in tentacle....<sigh, how romantic>)
Of course, the other possiblity is that it's a misprint i.e. they ran out of room on the card and forgot to include the immune-to-fear text. Has anyone actually ever *asked* about this? Jeff...?
A: It's a combination of space and the "civilizing" explanation. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 March 2003", 19 Mar 2003 - Q: 2) My opponent has personality Bob and a bowed follower attached to Bob. I have Hound of the Lost, some random fear effect, and Citadel of Daigotsu. Can I use the fear effect on Bob's unit, react with Hound of the Lost to target the follower, and then use the Citadel of Daigotsu to "bow Bob regardless of force"?
A: That looks legal. The Hound will make the Fear bow the Follower regardless of Force, then the Citadel (which has to be used after the Hound due to wording) makes the Fear "also affect [Bob]". Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: are shadowlands cards immune to fear out of this stronghold?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: When using fear under Citadel of Daigotsu on a personality with only followers, none of whom have force greater than the fear strength, can I bow the fear source to bow the personality, or do I need a second fear effect?
A: You need a second Fear effect. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 March 2003", 13 Mar 2003 - Q: I would just like to get confirmation that when a Citadel of Daigotsu player is trying to bow a personality via the SH trait, you may bow the Hound of the Lost to make the fear effect bow a personality regardless of their force. Is this correct or not?
A: It's not straightforward.
The Hound's reaction MUST be used first ("before another card in this army produces Fear" versus "When one of your cards is producing Fear"), and the Hound requires that you target one particular Follower in the unit the Fear is targeting. In order for you to use the Citadel's power as well, the target Personality must have no unbowed attached cards. So the combo is only legal against a unit that has no unbowed attached cards AND at least one bowed Follower. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 September 2002", 20 Sep 2002 - Q: In a game last night I was playing against a Shadowlands player who was using the Citadel of Daigotsu. Now according to the stronghold when one of his cards is producing Fear, he can bow that card to have the Fear also affect my Personality if I have no unbowed cards attached.
So I tried using Lady Moonís Curse on Osoreru no Oni Exp. to keep him from being able to use that ability on one of my beefier guys. He said it was an not ability according to the rulebook, which reads: Ability Text on a card or Stronghold or from the rulebook prefaced by "Limited," "Battle," "Open," or "Reaction." Synonymous with "action."
So my questions are, is the ability to bow the card to have the Fear also affect Personalities not really an ability?
A: It doesn't meet the definition in the rulebook. It's not an ability. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 September 2002", 19 Sep 2002 - Q: Curious,
Can you bow a complete unit(including the personality) by using CoD's Fear enhancing abitity?
A: No. The attached cards must all be bowed already to bow the Personality. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 March 2002", 15 Mar 2002 - Q: This came up in discussion with my local Courtmembers:
What happens if I target a personality with "Ever-present Fear" or "Way of Death"? Can I bow the personality?
A: No. You can't bow an Action card as you play it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 March 2002", 14 Mar 2002 - Q: Does this spell remove the ability of the Yogo Towers when it is played?
No. That ability is not on the Stronghold.
If Endless deluge Question targets a Spawning Ground or Citadel of Daigotsu stronghold, what abilities removes from them?
A: None, unless you have done something which gives them abilities, like play a Sensei card. Neither of these Strongholds has any natural abilities. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 March 2002", 6 Mar 2002 - Q: If Endless deluge Question targets a Spawning Ground or Citadel of Daigotsu stronghold, what abilities removes from them?
It removes all actions, i.e. everything that starts with "Battle:", "Open:", or "Limited:".
A: Or "Reaction:". Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 March 2002", 6 Mar 2002 - Q: 2) The card Way of Death refers to players using the Jogo Junzo and SLH strongholds for its larger Fear effect. Has this been MRPd for use with other Shadowlands strongholds, such as Citadel of Daigotsu, Spawning Ground, etc?
A: The MRP says "If you are a Shadowlands player". Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 January 2002", 11 Jan 2002 - Q: If I want to use the citadel of daigotsu effect with the Spell Strenght of the dark one:
Citadel of Daigotsu (F) 6 / 3 / -19 When one of your cards is producing Fear, you may bow the card to have the Fear also affect Personalities that do not have unbowed cards attached.
"Strength of the Dark One" :
Ritual Battle: Bow this Shugenja and any number of other Shugenja you control in this battle. Every unit in the opposing army is targeted with a Fear effect with a strength equal to the number of Shugenja in the Ritual. Lose honor equal to the number of Shugenja in the ritual. Gold 6
Need I to bow just the spell card or must I try to bow the shugenjas casting it (assuming i have a way to cast the spell without bowing them, like the event celestial alignment)
A: Using the Spirit Wars rulebook, which is the last one to define who "produces/performs" an action, it's the primary shugenja. Since he's already bowing, the Citadel cannot be brought into play. (What you need to do here is combo it with Celestial Alignment.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 December 2001", 14 Dec 2001 - Q: Iron Mempo: Battle: Once per battle, create Fear that bows all the Follower tokens in one unit. Citadel of Daigotsu: When one of your cards is producing Fear, you may bow the card to have the Fear also affect Personalities that do not have unbowed cards attached.
How does this interact with the Citadel. By my reading it could read,,,
1) Battle: Once per battle, create fear that bows all Personalities that do not have unbowed cards attached in one unit.
or
2) Battle: Once per battle, create Fear that bows all Personality tokens that do not have unbowed cards attached in one unit.
A: 2). Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 December 2001", 13 Dec 2001
