Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "City of Gold Singular. This Province has -1 Strength while City of Gold is bowed. Reaction: Bow City of Gold as a cost after you bow a Holding to produce Gold. City of Gold produces 1 Gold for the same payment." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 135
- Q: Ide Sadanobu and City of Gold both produce gold when you're paying for a card, but they don't say the gold has to be spent on that card. Can I spend it on a different card? A: No. You can only buy one card at a time in L5R. Any gold you generate while paying for a card must be spent on that card; it cannot be spent on or saved for another. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 10
Rules Q&A
- Q: If the Moneylender has 0 tokens on it, can you bow it and the City of Gold to produce 1 gold?
A: Yes (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 4 November 2003, Part 2", 5 Nov 2003 - Q: City of Gold's text says that bowing it after bowing a holding to produce gold, City produces 1 gold. Since it says "after" instead of "when" can I use this 1 extra gold to pay for something different instead of adding it to the holding's production?
A: No. It avoids the word "when" to prevent timing issues. Nonetheless, you use it while you are still paying the original cost. You must spend the Gold on the same thing. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 June 2003", 4 Jun 2003 - Q: Ahh, but according to the card text:
"Bow City of Gold after you bow a holding to produce gold, City of Gold produces 1 gold."
It says nothing about HOW LONG after you bow a holding to produce gold.
A: GE rulebook, page 48:
"You must take a Reaction as soon as its trigger occurs."
So you do, in fact, need to bow the City of Gold immediately after you bow one of your Holdings to produce Gold. Waiting to bow it later in the turn while paying for a different card would violate this rule.
The word "immediately" on Reactions would be redundant. "Before" means "immediately before." "After" means "immediately after."
Also, GE rulebook, page 38:
"You can bring only one card into play at a time; the Emperor taxes any excess Gold, and you lose it."
So the extra gold produced by a City of Gold cannot be spent on a different card any more than excess gold from the Holding it's reacting to can. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 March 2003", 14 Mar 2003 - Q: With all this talk of City of Gold, I have one quick question. Does it's ability produce a seperate 1G, or does it increase the Gold production by 1?
A: Your answer is on the card:
"Reaction: Bow City of Gold after you bow a Holding to produce Gold. City of Gold produces 1 Gold." Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 March 2003", 13 Mar 2003 - Q: Can you use city of gold to like this - bow jade works as a reaction bow city of gold purchase 2 large farms?
A: No. You buy one thing at a time in L5R. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11-12 September 2002", 13 Sep 2002 - Q: "Why City of Gold? Think about it. Crystal Mine + City buys Rokku for cheap, or Kuemon for full." - this seems to be implying that you can bow City of Gold (a Region) to use the Crystal Mine's gold production ability... Crystal Mine's card text reads: "*Singular* Bow Crystal Mine and one of your Gold-producing Holdings to produce 6 Gold." Does this mean that City of Gold is a Holding as well as a Region? or what?
A: It means that Kuemon costs 7 to buy at full and Rokku costs 7 to buy at reduced cost with the in-clan discount.
6 Gold from using Crystal Mine + 1 Gold from using City of Gold = 7 Gold.
You still need to pay the cost of using Crystal Mine, however, so you need another Holding - typically Gifts and Favors. Martin Lund, "Confusion over some rules interpretations...", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: Can I use Crystal Mine together with City of Gold (no more holdings)??
A: No. If you have no other holdings, it's known that Crystal Mine cannot produce gold on its own, so it is not a legal trigger for City of Gold. City of Gold is not a holding, so can't be used to pay the additional cost of Crystal Mine. Zen Faulkes, "City of Gold and Crystal Mine", 15 Mar 2005
