Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Claiming the Throne Before a player's turn ends this game, if the player, during that turn, destroyed a province in battle resolution, put at least two Rings into play by their own text, and gained 7 or more Honor, he may, as costs, discard the Imperial Favor and pay 10 Gold. If he does so, he wins the game." [MRP, Celestial Edition, 29 June 2009] Comprehensive Rules, Celestial Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, February 2012, p. 125

Rules Q&A
- Q: Does bowing a courtier with Shibata Sensei satisfy the conditions of Claiming the Throne, or must one actually possess and discard the Imperial Favor its self?
I looked for a ruling, but the closest situation I could find was a thread from what I believe was Celestial Edition, which seems to suggest you can, but I'd like clarification.

A: Shibata Sensei's trait only applies to Favor actions. The player ability granted by Claiming the Throne does not have the Favor keyword, so actions from it are not Favor actions. Alex Jones, "Shibata Sensei and Claiming the Throne", 24 Jul 2015 - Q: Claiming the Throne: Assuming the event's conditions are fulfilled, in which point of a player's turn does the victory occur? Is this his End Phase?
A: "Before a player's turn ends." That's after End Phase (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Sequence_of_play#End_Phase). Zen Faulkes, "Claiming the Throne, the text clarification", 26 Jun 2010 - Q: Is the event valid only during the turn it was revealed in a province, or does it remain valid through the rest of the game?
A: "This game" - the latter. Zen Faulkes, "Claiming the Throne, the text clarification", 26 Jun 2010 - Q: How the phrase "Before a player's turn ends this game" should be understood?
A: It's when you can for the "if a player" condition. Zen Faulkes, "Claiming the Throne, the text clarification", 26 Jun 2010 - Q: Claiming the throne: Before a player's turn ends this game, if the player, during that turn, destroyed a province in battle resolution, put at least two Rings into play by their own text, and gained 7 or more Honor, he may, as costs, discard the Imperial Favor and pay 10 Gold. If he does so, he wins the game.
So, can the 7 honor be gained by bringing personalities into play at full cost? (which means, yes, you'd probably be bowing 20ish gold in one dynasty phase and thats not likely anyway, but yeah)
A: Yes, part of that 7 honor can be from bringing a Personality from your Clan into play and forgoing the discount of 2G in order to gain honor equal to his Personal Honor. It still happened "during that turn". Keep in mind though, you may only gain honor this way once per Dynasty Phase. Brook Cunningham, "Claiming the Throne timing question", 9 May 2010 - Q: If Claiming the Throne does not actually have any costs (as per ruling here http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=74318)
Can you use Strength of the Forge to pay 2 gold for it? And if so, does that not imply that Claiming the Throne requires a cost?
A: You may not bow Strength of the Forge to pay 2G for the 10G payment option in Claiming the Throne. Dan Jacobson, "Commanding Favor, Claiming the Throne", 1 Mar 2009 - Q: Does discarding Commanding Favor count for discarding the imperial favor for Claiming the Throne? I ask because it counts for paying a cost, but Claiming doesn't read as a cost.
A: You are correct.
Claiming the Throne does not explicitly state that discarding the Imperial Favor is a cost.
It is an effect of the event.
You may not discard Commanding Favor for the purposes of Claiming the Throne's effect. Dan Jacobson, "Commanding Favor, Claiming the Throne", 28 Feb 2009 - Q: Claiming the Throne: Before a player's turn ends this game, if the player, during that turn, destroyed a province in battle resolution, put two or more Rings into play by their own text, and gained 7 or more Honor, he may discard the Imperial Favor and pay 10 Gold. If he does so, he wins the game.
Is discarding the favor for Claming the Throne a cost or not?
ex: Can I use Commanding Favor or Honor or any card that allow me to pay the cost of discarding the favor?
A: Claiming the Throne does not require that you discard the Imperial Favour "as a cost". You may not instead use an effect that lets pay a cost of discarding the Favour. Alex Jones, "claiming the throne & imperial favor", 22 Oct 2008
