Rules Q&A
- Q: For purposes of Clear Signals, in determining what "base tactician" meant, I always played it that they had to have "tactician" printed among their keywords on their card. I treated traits that gave tactician under certain circumstances, such as Mirumoto Toraizo gaining Tactician with a Mountain Card in play, as being not "base tactician", since they only received it under certain circumstances. However, the question recently came up in our league, and while I tried to defend my position, I couldn't completely convince my opponent... so, now I ask the question here: is "base tactician" limited to the tactician keyword printed directly on the card, or does it also apply to tactician-bestowing traits on the card?
A: Base:
'"Base" refers to a stat or keyword that exists on a card or other entity as printed (following the most recent printing) or initially created, without modifications from effects.'
Mirumoto Toraizo is given the Tactician keyword by his trait (or, if you like, by the effect of his trait); it's not a base keyword. Alex Jones, "Clear Signals and "base tactician"", 10 May 2008 - Q: Clear Signals from Honor's Veil Reads: Battle: Target one of your Tacticians without the base Tactician keyword: Straighten another of your target personalities at any location. Permanently give him the Tactician keyword. Move him to the current battlefield if any enemy units are there.
My question is which "him" is this card referring to in the final two sentences? Is it the personality that has the Tactician keyword, but not actually on his card? Or is the personality that is straightening in the first line of the effect?
-Matt
A: It refers to the last Personality referenced in the card text - the one you straightened. Martin Lund, "Clear Signals Question", 21 Mar 2008
