Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, “Commanding Favor This card enters play in your home. Discarding this card from your home counts as discarding the Imperial Favor to pay a cost.” [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 128
Rules Q&A
- Q: Follow-up, therefore, can Shrine of the Sun be used to discard such an offending event such as Shattered Focus or Commanding Favor?
A: I don't see the Relevance of the first to the second part.
Shrine of the Sun says, "Bow and destroy Shrine of the Sun to target an Event card in play or in any discard pile. End all ongoing effects of that card. Shuffle the Event into its owner's deck."
Any way you slice it, the Event goes back into owner's deck. It works on the Event weather it is in play, out of play, has ongoing effects, or have no effects at all. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 January 2005", 21 Jan 2005 - Q: 3) As Commanding Favor counts as paying the cost of the favor is it actually considered a use of the favor for effects such as Far From the Empire and Confusion at Court?
A: Yes. That's why Confusion at Court worked against Kyuden Bayushi Gozoku, and why using Kyuden Bayushi's Reaction still triggered the "until" clause of Gozoku Sensei. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 November 2004", 30 Nov 2004 - Q: If Commanding Favor pops up and I have Yokuni sensee in play, may I still discard the event for its effect? Will it even come into play?
A: It enters play (http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/#Sensei_cards). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 12 December 2003", 12 Dec 2003 - Q: Commanding Favor is a one time use card right?
A: Yes. Unless you know a way to discard events twice. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 3 October 2003", 4 Oct 2003 - Q: Relevant card text:
Temple of Tsukune Temple After a Personality enters play from this province: Bow him. Reaction: After a non-Personality card (including this card) enters play from this province: Refill this province face-up.
Question 1: After Temple of Tsukune enters play and the province is refilled face-up, if the revealed card is an event, does it resolve immediately?
Question 2: On a subsequent turn, if an event resolves that "enters play in your home" or "remains in play in your home" (examples: The Death of Ryoshun, Commanding Favor), does it trigger the reaction?
Thank you!
A: Yes, to both questions.
Keep in mind that Events that don't specifically come into play via their own text do not trigger Temple to Tsukune's Reaction.
For more information, see here. Dan Jacobson, "Temple of Tsukune and Events", 2 Apr 2009 - Q: If Claiming the Throne does not actually have any costs (as per ruling here http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=74318)
Can you use Strength of the Forge to pay 2 gold for it? And if so, does that not imply that Claiming the Throne requires a cost?
A: You may not bow Strength of the Forge to pay 2G for the 10G payment option in Claiming the Throne. Dan Jacobson, "Commanding Favor, Claiming the Throne", 1 Mar 2009 - Q: Does discarding Commanding Favor count for discarding the imperial favor for Claiming the Throne? I ask because it counts for paying a cost, but Claiming doesn't read as a cost.
A: You are correct.
Claiming the Throne does not explicitly state that discarding the Imperial Favor is a cost.
It is an effect of the event.
You may not discard Commanding Favor for the purposes of Claiming the Throne's effect. Dan Jacobson, "Commanding Favor, Claiming the Throne", 28 Feb 2009 - Q: Claiming the Throne: Before a player's turn ends this game, if the player, during that turn, destroyed a province in battle resolution, put two or more Rings into play by their own text, and gained 7 or more Honor, he may discard the Imperial Favor and pay 10 Gold. If he does so, he wins the game.
Is discarding the favor for Claming the Throne a cost or not?
ex: Can I use Commanding Favor or Honor or any card that allow me to pay the cost of discarding the favor?
A: Claiming the Throne does not require that you discard the Imperial Favour "as a cost". You may not instead use an effect that lets pay a cost of discarding the Favour. Alex Jones, "claiming the throne & imperial favor", 22 Oct 2008 - Q: Hi!
Commanding Favor Text This card enters play in your home. Discarding this card from your home counts as discarding the Imperial Favor to pay a cost.
Koutetsu Meiyo Armor • Unique This Personality has a minimum Chi of 5. Can only attach to a Crane Clan Personality. After the first time each game you attach this card: Gain Honor equal to this Personality's base Personal Honor. Political Limited: Bow this card: Take the Imperial Favor.
I have Commanding Favor in my home. I lobby for the Favor, and uses it discard a card and draw a card Limited ability. I bow the Koutetsu Meiyo to take the Favor.
Can I still use the Imperial Favor 2 more times?
Thanks!
A: Yes, the favor may be used any number of times per turn.
Note that the default favor actions are once per turn, so you would not be able to cycle another card until next turn. Chris Fuchs, "SE Imperial Favor", 4 Aug 2007 - Q: I cannot use Commanding Favor to move a target attacking enemy unit home if I have already used the Imperial Favor to do so that turn, correct?
A: It is that you can't use Commanding Favor so much as you can't use the Rulebook Ability: "Political Battle: Discard the Imperial Favor: Move a target attacking enemy unit home." more than Once Per Turn. The rule that "Each separate ability can only be used once per turn by default." applies to both Card Abilities and Rulebook abilities alike. Martin Lund, "Commanding Favor", 30 Jul 2007 - Q: Do the events that stay in play (e.g. Commanding Favor) count as on going effects of an event for the purposes of Unexpected Strike?
A: Search please!

This card remains in play in your home. While it is in play, you may discard it to pay a cost of using or discarding the Imperial Favor.
Confusion at court wrote:
Reaction: Play after the Imperial Favor is used to negate all effects it was discarded to pay for.
Does "Confusion at court" negate the effects of an action where the "commanding favor" was used to pay the cost of discarding the Imperial favour?
I would say yes, but the Imperial favour hasn't really been used or discarded by using "commanding favor", so is there a trigger for "confusion"?
A: Yes. It will mess with anything that requires using the Imperial Favor, even if someone uses an alternative method to meet that cost.
Effects that look for the Imperial Favor being used / discarded also respond to alternatie methods of meeting that cost like Kyuden Bayushi, Political Adjunct, or Commanding Favor. Martin Lund, "Commanding favor and Confusion at court", 10 Mar 2005
