Rules Q&A
- Q: Can Hundred Fold Cut be played as a Reaction to Consumed by Five Fires in order to stop the Kensai's destruction?
A: Is this question asking if targeting a Unit the same as targeting a Personality?
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_U#Unit: "Targeting a unit is the same as targeting its Personality."
Or is there something else generating the question? Zen Faulkes, "Hundred-Fold Cut vs. Consumed by Five Fires", 21 Jan 2011 - Q: Kuon attacks alone, Phoenix player with City of Tears defends.
As first action, the defender attachs Consumed by Five Fires, reacts with Heavenly Yari of the Phoenix targeting Kuon, which doesnt happen because of Kuon's trait, and then goes to take the aditional battle action to use Consumed by Five Fires to destroy Kuon.
Is this play legal?
A: Yes, this play is legal.
Additional Action: "When an action or triggered trait grants an additional action, the timing of the additional action is delayed, such that the action is taken once the action or trait that granted it has ended, and the opportunity to play Reactions to the end of the action or trait has passed. This makes sure that Battle actions can not occur within other Battle actions, and so on."
Thus, after the Equip action resolves, both the triggered trait of the Stronghold and the Reaction of the Yari are taken and resolve their effects, and then the additional action granted by the former is taken. Brook Cunningham, "Hida Kuon xp6 VS Heavenly Yari of the Phoenix", 11 Dec 2010 - Q: Hi there, I'm new to the game and very new to the boards.
I have tried looking through the large quantities of posts and rules and have yet to find a concrete answer to my query. The question I have is regarding the use of the Phoenix Stronghold City of Tears and bowed shugenja, which goes as follows (the particular cards in the combo were City of Tears, Isawa Tanaka & Consumed by Five Fires).
City of Tears: Equipping Spells is a Battle/Open action for you. After the resolution of an Equip Battle action you took, you may take an additional Battle action from the Spell it attached.
Consumed by Five Fires: Battle: Bow this card: Destroy a target enemy unit with fewer cards than this unit.
Example: I attach the spell Consumed by Fives Fires to Tanaka (who is bowed) and then use the City of Tears trait to play the battle action and on the newly attached spell to destroy an enemy unit as per Consumed by Five Fires text. Now since the spell itself doesn't say I need to bow the shugenja itself as a cost of using it only needing to bow itself, is it possible for me to legally do this even though Tanaka is bowed?
Many thanks
A: Please do not use acronyms or abbreviations.
Bowed shugenja can cast spells. Zen Faulkes, "City of Tears & bowed shugenja", 23 Jul 2009 - Q: I use Consumed by Five Fires to try to destroy a unit led by Moto Chagatai with Fortified Cavalry attached; my opponent is left with which of the following:
a) Chagatai and 4 force follower, created by Fortified Cavalry b) Chagatai c) nothing
A: Just Chagatai.
To quote MacBeth2001 when this question was discussed by the Rules Junta: 1. [Consumed by Five Fires'] action is taken; its effects will destroy all cards in the unit simultaneously. 2. Before that occurs, Fortified Cavalry's trait kicks in, negating the Personality's destruction, and creating and attaching the new Follower. 3. Now, the unit destruction occurs, except for the Personality's part of it, which was negated. But this destruction does include the new Follower, as it's now part of the unit.
