Rulings
- Is Political. [Rulebook] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 11
- May not double honor loss from a refused Iaijutsu Challenge, because the loss is written on Iaijutsu Challenge. [FAQ] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 11
- Q: I just played Iaijutsu Challenge on my opponent's Personality, and he refused the duel. Can I play Court Jester to double his honor loss to 14? It was his refusal that made him lose honor. A: It may have been his decision to refuse the duel, but the action causing the loss is your own Iaijutsu Challenge, so you cannot use Court Jester to double the loss. The word "action" has a strict definition in L5R, and only applies to effects that start with one of the four action types: Limited, Open, Battle, or Reaction. For the same reason, your opponent can use Defend Your Honor against the honor loss, too. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 11
Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm not talking about Wedge or Shinjo's Breath, I'm talking about those cards which don't quite make the cut in Open, but might in Gold.
My choices, A to E: Court Jester
A: It already has a substitute: Imperial Scrutiny (AOF). Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 May 2002", 7 May 2002 - Q: [Imperial] [Jade] {Hidden Emperor]
My opponent is the Ninja clan, and they use Kolat Assassin. Can I use Court Jester to double their honor loss?
A: Yes. The Jester does not cause a loss and no loss comes from it; it only modifies a loss the player caused themself. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 30 Sep 2025
