Rules Q&A
- Q: Do the personality brought back to play by Will gets bowed by Crippling Weather?
A: Yes.
Will is performed, because the Samurai is targeted in constraints and it was printed before The Plague War changed to explicit performing.
The Personality is brought into play as the last effect of the action, after which it ends, after which he bows due to the Crippling Weather. Brook Cunningham, "Will and Crippling Weather", 19 Sep 2011 - Q: I straightened two personalities while my opponent had Crippling Weather in play. He demanded I bow them both. I explained that they weren't performing anything. He says anything before the colon is considered to be performing (i.e. targeting). I understood the colons to simply denote cost of playing the card. Ususally if someone is to perform an action, it will explicitly say "perform" on the card.
Should I have been able to straighten my guys? Or am I in the wrong here?
A: Under Celestial Edition rules, performance of an action can be indicated by targeting in the constraints block.

Mod nudge: Read the FAQ! Zen Faulkes, "Is Creating Order performed?", 4 Aug 2011 - Q: if Crippling Weather is in play and I play Reckless Rush with one of my personalities would they straighten right before resolution and stay straight or immediately bow again due to crippling weathers effect?
A: The key to this question is, "When does an action end?" Here, the action ends after the last non-delayed effect; http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... ction_ends
It will bow once from Crippling Weather after the action ends . Then the Delayed Effect of Reckless Rush will straighten the Personality. Zen Faulkes, "Crippling weather and reckless rush", 5 Jul 2011 - Q: This question came up in a game I was playing this weekend.
If Player A slaps down Crippling weather, and then player B decides to play Reckless Rush... Would player B's personality straighten before battle resolution? What about Daidoji Yorio using his own ability in the same situation?
I say they would straighten because Crippling Weather's effect doesn't trigger until the performed action resolves. They are already bowed due to the cost of the action. Also, Crippling Weather says nothing about negating the straightening of people that have performed actions.
Can anyone confirm my interpretation of how it would work?
A: Crippling Weather bows the Performers after the Resolution of the action, which is a part of process of taking the action. During the Resolution step you activate each effect, but they are not necessarily applied immediately: some are delayed until a specified time or trigger after the action ends.
For example, Reckless Rush conditionally creates two or three effects. It bows the target as an immediate, instantaneous effect; it may destroy the target, again as an immediate, instantaneous effect; it unbows the performer as a delayed effect. These are activated during the Resolution step, but only the first two are applied then. After the Resolution step ends, the action ends, and the performer is bowed by Crippling Weather, although this effect fails in this case because the performer is already bowed. Some time later, after all players pass, the Combat Segment of the current battle ends and its Resolution Segment begins: at that point the delayed effect of Reckless Rush is applied, and the performer straightens.
Doji Yorio works in a similar manner. Alex Jones, "Daidoji Yorio or Reckless Rush with Crippling Weather.", 31 May 2011 - Q: I play Show of Restraint on my monk, my opponent then plays Crippling Weather, then my monk performs something. Will he bow, or will it be negated?
A: Crippling Weather's bowing is a card effect. Your monk will not bow. Zen Faulkes, "Show of Restraint and Crippling Weather", 27 May 2011 - Q: Crippling Weather has already been played, and my monk performs Show of Restraint. Will he then bow, or will Show of Restraint negate it?
A: He will not bow, because the last delayed effect negating bowing will have already been activated before Crippling Weather's effect triggers. Zen Faulkes, "Show of Restraint and Crippling Weather", 27 May 2011 - Q: If i play Crippling Weather and my oponent plays an action to move away from the battle, after that action's resolutios does the personality still bow?
For example, let's say i've played Crippling Weather against a ninja player:
a) He reacts with Bayushi Muhito xp2 and goes to another battlefield. Does Muhito bow after the action's resolution?
b) He plays Black Hearts, Red Blades and goes home. What happens with the targeted personalities?

Crippling weather Winter Battle: Destroy all terrains in play. Until this battle ends, no new terrains may be played. After each time this battle an action ends, bow any Personalities who performed it.
Bayushi Muhito xp2 Reaction: After the resolution of another player's Battle action: Move Muhito to a different location.
Black Hearts, Red Blades Ninja Battle: Target two of your unbowed Ninja Personalities without non-Ninja Followers: Move them home. If both of them moved, discard any cards in the current battlefield's province and draw two cards.
A: Crippling Weather bows any Personality who performs an action. It doesn't care whether it's a Battle action or a Reaction action, it doesn't care where the Personality is now, it doesn't care whether any other Personality or Follower also performed the action, it doesn't care whether the action came from an ability on the Personality, on a Strategy, on an attachment, on a Holding, Region, Event or Stronghold or in the rulebook.
"This battle" is a time frame, not a location. "This battlefield" or "The battlefield at this province" is a location. Alex Jones, "Crippling Weather and movement from the battle", 20 May 2011 - Q: As a follow up to this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=90913#p1207195
Crippling Weather isn't actually a terrain.
However, Crippling Weather also doesn't come into play, so I don't see how you would destroy it. I'm assuming Crippling Weather creates an instantaneous change.
A: Er. Yes. The "destroyed" bit in the original question threw me. I reckoned it had to be a Terrain, since that's the kind of strategy that does get destroyed.
Bad Rules Guy for not looking at the card! No biscuit for me!
As Crippling Weather cannot be destroyed, the original question is working under a false premise. The effect continues after it is discarded, no different from many other strategy cards. Zen Faulkes, "Crippling weather "no terrains" effect", 19 May 2011 - Q: If Crippling Weather is destroyed, does the effect "no new terrains may be played" remain in effect?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_T#Terrain: "If a Terrain leaves play before a battle’s Final Steps, its ongoing effects end, and its delayed effects will no longer be applied." Zen Faulkes, "Crippling weather "no terrains" effect", 18 May 2011 - Q: My opponent plays Crippling Weather. And eventually two of my units are bowed. I have a third commander and I play Do Not Turn Your Back! to straighten two units. My commander must now bow to Crippling Weather's effect. I argued that My other two personalities do not have to bow.
A: So this question is, "Do the personalities straightened by Do Not Turn Your Back! perform an action?"
No. See: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#What_performs_an_action.3F Zen Faulkes, "Do Not Turn Your Back!", 10 Mar 2011 - Q: Crippling weather bows any personalities that performed an action after the action ends. Does this bow personalities that used their Reactions(?)
A: Yes (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_A#Action). Reactions are actions. Zen Faulkes, "Crippling Weather and Reactions", 7 Mar 2011 - Q: (D)oes it matter where the Personality is?
A: No. Rule of Location (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles#Rule_of_Location) applies to cards in units. Crippling Weather is not in a unit. Zen Faulkes, "Crippling Weather and Reactions", 7 Mar 2011 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=89212
Just to quickly mention that the original poster mentioned straightening with Superior Mobility, not using its battle action, which WOULD be fine as the straighten action on Sup Mob isn't performed: "Battle: Straighten your target unit.". Of course Zen's answer was right if he'd mentioned the sendhome ability
A: Stoopid cards with two actions.
Sigh. Thanks for the catch. Zen Faulkes, "Crippling Weather & Performing", 1 Mar 2011 - Q: If Crippling Weather is played by player A. Player B performs an action on his personality and is bowed. Can the bowed personality straighten with cards like Superior Mobility, Shattered Peaks Castle or are these actions considered targeting so the personality would straighten then bow again?
A: Crippling Weather cares about performing, not targeting. Superior Mobility's second action says, "Choose your performing unbowed Personality" (emphasis added), so the Personality would be affected by Crippling Weather.
Shattered Peaks Castle and Superior Mobility's first action targets, but for them to be performed, the targeting would have to have colons on either side (as the FAQ reminds; http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#What_performs_an_action.3F). It is not performed, and the Personality is not hit by Crippling Weather.
Targeting does relate to performing, but the test for whether a card targets is easy. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_T#Targeting: "The word 'target' must appear as a verb or an adjective for the procedure to be considered targeting -- just 'choosing' something is not targeting."
[Slightly changed to deal with multiple abilities on Superior Mobility.] Zen Faulkes, "Crippling Weather & Performing", 1 Mar 2011 - Q: During a battle, my opponent plays the terrain Crippling Weather. I have a bowed monk in the battle and want to use Spinning Heel Kick to straighten him to perform one with the flame. Is he able to do so? or will he just bow again after spinning heel kick resolves?
A: The latter. Brook Cunningham, "Additional actions and resolution confusion", 26 Feb 2011
