Rules Q&A
- Q: Just making sure to have it in print.
Does Aka-Beko interfere with Cursed Relic costs?
My reading is: no.
A: Correct. Aka-Beko only negates Force and Chi penalties from other players' actions, so Cursed Relic away. Jon Palmer, "Aka Beko and Cursed Relic", 17 Mar 2013 - Q: Let's say I have Ryoshun's Guidance out (giving my personalities +1 Chi while not in a duel), a Cursed Relic on one of my personalities, and have used the Ranged Attack action on the Relic a number of times equal to the personality's base Chi (leaving him with only the one Chi from the Guidance). If my personality is challenged to a duel, and loses that one Chi, I'm assuming he dies immediately to Chi-death. But what happens with the duel? Does the action that created the duel still resolve? Will the focus/strike stuff still happen? Is there a winner/loser?
A: Challenges and duels: If a Personality involved in a challenge or duel leaves play during it, the challenge or duel ends immediately without resolution. In particular, Focus Effects that have not yet resolved at that point do not resolve at all.
If a duel ends "without resolution", skip immediately to Step K: Duel Cleanup. Alex Jones, "Ryoshun's Guidance + Cursed Relic + Duel", 31 Jul 2012 - Q: Concerning my previous question here viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95972#p1269680 and this ruling Nevertheless, a conditional ongoing effect is a single effect, regardless of how many times it is reapplied Does it mean that i give -1 chi one time and then i do unlimited ranged attacks ?
A: No. The conditional ongoing effect description refers to a different type of effect than Cursed Relic's -1C - that's just a plain old ongoing effect. You have to pay the -1C every time you want to do the Ranged 3, sorry. Jon Palmer, "Cursed Relic question No2", 29 Jan 2012 - Q: What happens with the Chi penalty on the personality since it does not say that it is a token or a permanent effect .
Cursed relic ability is : Battle: Any number of times per turn, give this Personality -1C: Ranged 3 Attack. Battle: Bow this card, give this Personality -1C, and target an enemy card without attachments: Remove it from the game.
A: If the duration of an ongoing effect isn't stated, it lasts until the end of the turn by default. Jon Palmer, "Cursed Relic question", 28 Jan 2012 - Q: Hi Rules guys,
When a personality is equipped with both Gift Armor and Cursed Relic, does the Personality's Chi remain as is when using Cursed Relic's Battle actions because of Gift Armor? Or is this not a legal play because a cost cannot be paid because Gift Armor negates Chi penalties?
Cursed Relic Battle: Any number of times per turn, give this Personality -1C: Ranged 3 Attack Battle: Bow this card, give this Personality -1C, and target an enemy card without attachments: Remove it from the game.
Gift Armor Negate all current and new Chi penalties on this Personality. Negate any destruction of this card, except for its Personality being destroyed.
A: No, unfortunately the negation of the chi penalty will prevent the cost on Cursed Relic from being paid. Jon Palmer, "Cursed Relic and Gift Armor", 21 Jan 2012 - Q: First for clarification, is the -1C from Cursed Relic a penalty, a cost, or both?
A: Both. Brook Cunningham, "Cursed Relic + Gift Armor", 22 Dec 2011 - Q: With that in mind, if the personality that has Cursed Relic also has Gift Armor equipped, can he legally announce either of Cursed Relic's abilities?
A: In fact, he cannot. Brook Cunningham, "Cursed Relic + Gift Armor", 22 Dec 2011 - Q: [T]hat was not Barswanian's question. ... Barswanian's question was "If a card that removed from the game is destroyed, would it go to the discard pile? And if so, would it be a dead personality or not?"
A: Thanks for the rephrase. (Here we have an example of the perils of asking a question using a bunch of specific cards in a combo as an example, rather than asking the general question.)
Will try to deal with this a very similar thread over here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95155. To repeat what I initially said there: Personality destroyed while out of play does go to the discard pile, and is considered discarded, but is not dead.
But what I since realized is that this started with a situation where an out of play Personality was destroyed. I overextended from "out of play" to "out of game," which was a mistake.
So, a correction: A card removed from the game can't be destroyed, and thus, can't be brought back. Zen Faulkes, "Cursed Relic & I Do Not Die So Easily!", 2 Dec 2011 - Q: If Cursed Relic targets a person with its Removal from Game ability, can I react to the targeting with I do not Die so easily, and then take a battle action on my next turn to return the personality to the game (albeit into the discard pile?)
A: No, because I Do Not Die So Easily negates destruction. Cursed Relic does not destroy; it "removes from the game". The two terms are not identical. Destroyed cards are removed from the game (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_D#Destroy), but there is no rule that all cards removed from the game are destroyed (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Areas_of_the_ga ... ommunal.29). Zen Faulkes, "Cursed Relic & I Do Not Die So Easily!", 1 Dec 2011 - Q: Cursed Relic: Do the penalties from this item persist beyond end-of-turn?
A: They do not. They end at the end of the turn like other bonuses and penalties.
The section on continuous traits that you quoted does not apply here, because the -1C penalities from Cursed Relic are costs of actions, not traits. Zen Faulkes, "Cursed Relic = persistent Chi penalty?", 16 Oct 2011 - Q: This is a generic question inspired by the FL card Cursed Relic.
I announce that my 4C Magistrate is going to use an action that has a cost of giving himself -1C. I then react with Magistrate's Stipend. When the action is complete, does my Magistrate have 3 or 4 Chi?
Magistrate's Stipend Text Mine Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or 3 Gold if paying for a Magistrate. Reaction: After you announce a non-Iaijutsu action, choose your performing Magistrate: Give him +1C until the action ends.
A: You announce the action from Cursed Relic. As a Reaction, you take the action from Magistrate's Stipend, giving the Personality 4 + 1 = 5 chi. You pay the cost of Cursed Relic's action, giving him 4 + 1 - 1 = 4 chi. After the action ends, the +1C bonus ends and he has 4 - 1 = 3 chi.
