- Erratum: Reads, "Daidoji Rekai 4F/4C 0HR 11G 3PH Crane Clan Archer. Daidoji Daimyo. Samurai. Cavalry. Experienced 2. Unique. Battle: Once per turn, move Rekai into the current battle and have her make a Ranged 3 Attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks, without bowing." [MRP, Gold Edition, 1 July 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 95
- May use her ability if she is in the current battle (i.e., she may shoot without moving, but cannot move without shooting). [JA, 11 January 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 95
- If she is not in the current battle when she begins her action, actions cannot be used that require a card be in the battle (e.g., No Hiding Place, Not Another Step). (Not Another Step changes the allowable target, so must be played when targeting occurs. If Rekai is not in any battle when she targets, no battle is "adjacent.") [JA, 20 June 2002, 7 October 2002; ZF, 12 July 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 95
- Q: Ah... I see. Cool. So this means I can also use Daidoji Rekai to move into a battle where there are no defenders and crush a Province. Her ranged attack won't happen, but her movement still will. A: No you can't use Rekai that way. There's one crucial difference between Rekai and Hataki: Rekai won't always have a target for her action. Hataki's movement targets the current battle, which will always exist if you're using a Battle action! Rekai, on the other hand, includes a mandatory ranged attack as part of her action. This ranged attack targets a Follower or a Personality with no Followers who'll be opposing her at her new location. As with any targeted action, if no targets can be picked, the action isn't legal. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 9

Rules Q&A
- Q: With talk about Moto Latomu, I was wondering if Rekai's Battle action is affected by the ruling for Latomu since its range attacks involves movement?
A: No impact that I can see. The cards are very distinct in function. Rekai has a single ability with both movement and Ranged Attack effects in it. Latomu only has a Ranged Attack. His ability does not generate any movement, but rather Reacts to it. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 July 2004", 23 Jul 2004 - Q: Can a peep with the drum of water attached that is in the current battle destroy the drum to move into the current battle ala Matsu Hataki/Daidoji Rekai?
A: No. The Drum of Water specifically moves the bearer to "another" of the Defender's provinces. That cannot, by definition, be the one that they are currently at. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: Can I use Daidoji Rekai ability if I don't make a ranged attack?
A: No. Gold rules, pg. 46. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 June 2003", 27 Jun 2003 - Q: Can I use Daidoji Rekai ability if she is already in the battle to move her to the same battle, make ranged attack, etc. ?
A: Yes. Rules Archive (http://www.legendofthefiverings/rulings), Specific cards, Personalities, Daidoji Rekai. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 June 2003", 27 Jun 2003 - Q: So are "this battle" (Accessible Terrain) and "the current battle" (Daidoji Rekai xp2) different things?
A: Sometimes.
"The current battle" always means nothing more than "the battle going on right now". "This battle" always means at least that, and ALSO means "the battle this card is in" unless that phrase is nonsensical due to the nature of the card (like an Action card or a non-Fortification Holding). Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 April 2003", 9 Apr 2003 - Q: So, then, I can use Tsuruchi Technique or Arrows from the Woods with Daidoji Rekai xp2's Ability to make a Ranged 3 attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks to increase the RA strength, as it does not count as combining?
A: Right.
It's actually quite simple. "Combining" is when you take several separate ranged attack actions on different cards and use them all at the same time to add their strengths together into one single ranged attack. "Modifying" is when someone makes a ranged attack and then you change it, including making it stronger or weaker or changing its target. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 April 2003", 4 Apr 2003 - Q: Ok, I've got some linked rules questions that I could do with answering.
Right, to start with, Daidoji Rekai XP2 *can* use her ability to move and shoot in the current battle when she's already there. i.e she effectively moves away, comes back and then performs a ranged strike. This has been cleared up already.
A: She does not "move away and come back". She does not move. If her movement is meaningless, it does not make her action illegal -- the movement simply doesn't happen.
(Moving without shooting is different for her. It is not legal, but for unrelated reasons. Her action requires a target to shoot at, and NO targeted action in L5R can be taken if there's no target for it.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 March 2003", 26 Mar 2003 - Q: While playing my Crane against my friend's Mantis, we came up with an interesting question I'd love to have answered if possible.
No Hiding Place reads, "Reaction: Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the defender's home with the Ranged Attack. The Ranged Attack has -1 strength."
Rekai reads: " Battle: Once per turn, move Rekai into the current battle and have her make a Ranged 3 Attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks, without bowing."
Could they be used together?
A: I'd love to answer "yes" to this because it's in the spirit of the cards, but that creates a big timing paradox, since she has to move before she shoots, No Hiding Place can't be used until after she moves, she can only move if she uses her action, and she can't use her action until after No Hiding Place is played. I'm going to rule against it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 March 2003", 21 Mar 2003 - Q: What is the order of events in the following situation?
At a battle, I have Muchitsujo, the Onisu of Chaos with the following "Reaction: Once per turn, after a unit assigns to a battle during a Cavalry Maneuvers Segment or moves into a battle, bow that unit". At the battle, Daidoji Rekai comes galloping in with her "Battle: Once per turn, move Rekai into the current battle and have her make a Ranged 3 Attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks, without bowing."
My assumption is, as soon as Rekai "moves" into the battle, that is the trigger for Muchitsujo's reaction, which will then stop the Ranged 3 attack ... right?
A: Bowing her won't stop the ranged attack. Even destroying her with Slaughter the Scout won't. [FOU rulesheet] The "without bowing" on Rekai overrides the standard rule that ranged attacks require bowing the shooter, nothing more. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 March 2003", 20 Mar 2003 - Q: I forsee a yes on this because of previous rulings on similar abilities such as Daidoji Rekai Exp 2 - She can use her Range in battle because it's legal for her to move in even if it produces no results, or to shoot a unit / follower with more than three force in order to move in.
A: Tireless Assault must target a unit in your home, by card text, so it cannot be played on a unit in the battle, regardless of how similiar cards have been ruled. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: My gut reaction is "Yes" to both, since Daidoji Rekai doesn't need there to be any opposing personalities to shoot to move into a battle.
A: Yes she does. The ranged attack is a mandatory effect of her action and requires a target. Actions that have targets can't be taken if no legal target exists. [GE p. 46] Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 October 2002", 22 Oct 2002 - Q: Well ok, it's a bit confusing, here is an example :
Daidoji Rekai xp 2: Battle: Once per turn, move Rekai into the current battle [...]
or
Matsu Hataki xp : Battle: If you are the Defender, straighten Hataki (if bowed) and move him into the current battle.
So the question is : can I use those abilities during battle if the personality is home when I want to move it ?
A: Yes.
As a separate matter, notice that Rekai's action needs to target a card to shoot. If there's no one for her to shoot, she can't use her action. This has nothing to do with any restrictions on moving, though. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2002", 18 Oct 2002 - Q: But [Daidoji Rekai Exp 2 + Not Another Step] is legal if she is at a battle and adjacent to the battle in question?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 July 2002", 13 Jul 2002 - Q: Can I have Rekai MOVE into prov B and use Not Another Step to kill a personality in any other NON-resolved battle?
A: Surprisingly, no, based on Jeff Alexander's post of 20 June.
]] Can I use no hiding place to bring Daidoji Rekai Exp. 2 as an ]] attacker into a battle with no defenders if there is a personality ]] in the defenders home? ] ] No. "Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your ] attacking cards IN THE CURRENT BATTLE..."
Following that, no battle is "adjacent" when Rekai begins her action, so Not Another Step can't be used. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 12 July 2002", 13 Jul 2002 - Q: 1. Can I use no hiding place to bring Daidoji Rekai Exp. 2 as an attacker into a battle with no defenders if there is a personality in the defenders home?
2. If Bayushi Paneki is Dishonored can he attach a 3 HR follower?
A: No. Being dishonored sets a Personality's Personal Honor to 0 after all other modifications. [rulebook p. 60] Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 June 2002", 14 Jun 2002 - Q: Q.2 Blackened Skies + Daidoji Rekai Under Blackened Skies, may I activate Rekai's ability to move in and shoot without interrupting the chain of Ranged Attacks? I.E. Does it count as an action that produces a ranged attack even if there are some other side effects?
A: Her action produces a ranged attack, so it's legal. It doesn't matter if it does other things besides. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 May 2002", 24 May 2002 - Q: If Daidoji Rekai exp2 uses her ability to make a range 3 attack at the current battle without moving into the battle does Rekai have to bow to perform the action?
No. "...without bowing" (card text) means just that.
A: Having thought on this some more, I don't think Rekai can use her ability *at all* unless she is outside the current battle. Under Gold targeting rules, I think her ability targets the current battle. So if she's in the current battle, there is no legal target for her ability. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 December 2001", 23 Dec 2001 - Q: If Daidoji Rekai exp2 uses her ability to make a range 3 attack at the current battle without moving into the battle does Rekai have to bow to perform the action?
A: No. "...without bowing" (card text) means just that. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 December 2001; Commons challenge", 22 Dec 2001 - Q: If I play Kolat Master on one of my opponents' Daidoji Rekai, and his Kolat Duplicate resolves, and he selects Rekai, would she go into my deck and be free, or his?
A: His, since he's Rekai's owner. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 November 2001", 27 Nov 2001 - Q: I have a Doji Benku in a Battle when my opponent's Daidoji Rekai (exp. 2) enter in the battle targeting my Benku with her ranged attack. So I use the reaction of Benku with an Arrows from the Woods targeting Rekai. What happens?
A: The Rules Junta convenes and pounds their brains for a bit. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 19 September 2001", 20 Sep 2001 - Q: Also when I don´t have any personalities in a battle, can I take a battle action from a unit outside that province, but in another province that moves it directly to that battle (i.e like Daidoji Rekai Exp 2.)
A: If it's one of your units, yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2-7 August 2001", 9 Aug 2001 - Q: According to the rulebook, negating some of an action's effects doesn't stop any of the others. (This is something that's pretty much always been true, really.) The trouble that arises is that going home bowed is two effects -- you go home, and you bow.
I really hate to ask this, but how does this statement interact with the recent reversal on the ruling on Daidoji Rekai Exp 2? Does it?
A: It doesn't. The rulebook entry only applies to negating some of the effects of an action which has been taken. Rekai's ruling is based on the fact that all targeted actions need to have all necessary targeting requirements satisfied at the outset. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 18 February 2001", 21 Feb 2001 - Q: Oh, by the way, I was following the Daidoji Rekai experienced 2 where she can go into a battle to make a ranged attack. That one, i followed half way and after that i do not know what is the answer. So can she really move into a battle with no ranged attack made by her?
A: Not in general, no, because her action needs a target. (However, with the help of a card that allows her to make her ranged attack without a normal target, such as Burn It Down, she can sometimes move in against nobody.) Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 22 January 2001", 25 Jan 2001 - Q: At the tournament I was at today, the Crane players insisted that Daidoji Rekai exp2 could move into a battle in which she couldn't perform her ranged attack. If this is right, why the hell does she only cost 11 gold, and have a zero honor requirement? I mean look at her, she has 3 ph, 4F/4C, cavalry and one of the best offensive abilities in the game!!!! Good God, she is going in my Unicorn deck tonight!
A: She cannot move in and shoot at nothing because her action requires a target, and it's not legal to take a targeted action without one. (She can move in and use Burn It Down because that card has been ruled to be usable even if you can't pick a legal real target for the ranged attack before Burn It Down is played.) Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 13 January 2001", 16 Jan 2001
