Rules Q&A
- Q: This question came up in a game I was playing this weekend.
If Player A slaps down Crippling weather, and then player B decides to play Reckless Rush... Would player B's personality straighten before battle resolution? What about Daidoji Yorio using his own ability in the same situation?
I say they would straighten because Crippling Weather's effect doesn't trigger until the performed action resolves. They are already bowed due to the cost of the action. Also, Crippling Weather says nothing about negating the straightening of people that have performed actions.
Can anyone confirm my interpretation of how it would work?
A: Crippling Weather bows the Performers after the Resolution of the action, which is a part of process of taking the action. During the Resolution step you activate each effect, but they are not necessarily applied immediately: some are delayed until a specified time or trigger after the action ends.
For example, Reckless Rush conditionally creates two or three effects. It bows the target as an immediate, instantaneous effect; it may destroy the target, again as an immediate, instantaneous effect; it unbows the performer as a delayed effect. These are activated during the Resolution step, but only the first two are applied then. After the Resolution step ends, the action ends, and the performer is bowed by Crippling Weather, although this effect fails in this case because the performer is already bowed. Some time later, after all players pass, the Combat Segment of the current battle ends and its Resolution Segment begins: at that point the delayed effect of Reckless Rush is applied, and the performer straightens.
Doji Yorio works in a similar manner. Alex Jones, "Daidoji Yorio or Reckless Rush with Crippling Weather.", 31 May 2011 - Q: Daidoji Yorio Crane Clan • Samurai • Magistrate Battle: Bow Yorio: Bow a target enemy Personality with lower Personal Honor than Yorio's Chi. Gain 1 Honor. Straighten Yorio before this battle's resolution.
My SearchFu has failed me, sensei.
I am under the impression that Yorio, even if sent home, will straighten during the current battle's resolution as long as he was at the battle AND while at the battle used his battle ability. Is this correct?
Scenario 1:
Yorio bows and bows target enemy, gains 1 honor. Enemy uses Settling the Homeless (Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Move a target Personality without Followers home.) on Yorio. Battle ends. Yorio straightens or Yorio remains bowed?
Scenario 2:
Yorio bows and bows target enemy, gains 1 honor. I use Discretionary Valor (Move your target opposed Personality home: Gain 1 Honor. Draw a card.) on Yorio. Battle ends. Yorio straightens or Yorio remains bowed?
I look forward to your response.

EDIT: This answer makes me happy. It means that Yorio can evade battle resolution, and therefore can be moved to multiple battles.
A: Yorio's straightening is only dependent on timing (Before this battle's resolution...).
It is not dependent on his location in play.
He will straighten regardless of his location before the Battle in which he used his Battle ability resolves. Dan Jacobson, "Daidoji Yorio and battle resolution", 23 Oct 2009 - Q: The effects of Extended Maneuvers and Daidoji Yorio both occur "before this battle's resolution". If both of these effects need to resolve, in what order would they resolve?
A: Because they are both delayed effects with the same timing, the active player chooses the order in which they resolve. Brook Cunningham, "Extended Maneuvers & Daidoji Yorio timing", 17 Oct 2009
