Hi,
Let's say I have a Pillowbook attached to one of my personalities. I target Bofana with an action. Am I still required to discard a card via his trait?
Thanks!
A: Bofana is another player's card, which has an effect that would cause you to discard a card from your hand. Pillowbook will prevent this. Jon Palmer, "Pillowbook and Bofana", 12 May 2012 - Q: Does the effect from a card's trait count as an action?
I am specifically wondering if Daigotsu Bofana's trait will trigger from my opponent bowing him through Heart of Darkness's trait. Will my opponent have to discard?
A: Heart of Darkness is not an action targeting Bofana. Heart of Darkness doesn't target anything, and the bowing is not an effect from an action. Therefore, no discard necessary. Jon Palmer, "Daigotsu Bofana vs Heart of Darkness", 6 Mar 2012 - Q: Greetings! Player A Has daigotsu Bofana in his home Player B uses his governor's court on Player A Player A chooses to bow hiw daigotsu Bofana, does player B discard a card?
Thanks.
A: Yes.
Daigotsu Bofana: After the first time each phase another player's action targets Bofana: If the action was not performed by a card with (current) Force equal to or higher than Bofana's base Force, the player discards a card. Governor's Court: ... He may choose to target and bow one of his unbowed Personalities. ...
If Bofana's controller targets Bofana with his opponent's action from Governor's Court, that does trigger Bofana's trait (unless the performing Courtier has sufficient force). Alex Jones, "Governor's Court and Daigotsu Bofana", 9 Jan 2012 - Q: During a recent game, I targeted Bofana while having no cards in my hand. My opponent thought that I couldn't take the action since I couldn't discard, but I disagreed. I'd like to get an official ruling:
If a player with no cards in hand targets Bofana for the first time in a phase, does the action still occur?
Daigotsu Bofana - After the first time each phase another player's action targets Bofana: If the action was not performed by a card with (current) Force equal to or higher than Bofana's base Force, the player discards a card.
A: Because the discard Bofana forces is an effect, not a cost, the action will still occur. Jon Palmer, "Daigotsu Bofana clarification", 17 Dec 2011 - Q: In line with this topic viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94911, Palmer ruled that if a Stronghold was used to target Bofana, the player who controls the Stronghold must discard a card since the Stronghold is not performing and does not have a force equal/greater than Bofana's base force.
Does this mean that ANY card, whether Strategy card, region, holding, that targets Bofana for the first time per phase, as long as any of those cards have a force lower than Bofana's base force, will have its controller to discard a card?
example: non-performing Strategy card,Stronghold, Holding, Region, Celestial -will always have a lower force than Bofana's base force; controller discards a card Performing strategy card, Follower, personality, Spell, Item, Celestial - check performing card; if performer has lower force than Bofana's base force, controller discards a card
If my interpretation is right, ANY card with lower force(regardless of performing or not) that targets Bofana for the first time each phase must discards a card.
If my understanding of his trait is erroneous, please enlighten me on how his trait works.
A: Not quite accurate. Any card that targets Bofana will force the discard UNLESS it is performed by a card with higher force.
Therefore, any non-performed action (if it's the first of the phase that targets Bofana) will force the discard. As will any action that is performed, but by a card with lower force than Bofana. Only if the first action of the phase that targets Bofana is performed by a card with equal or higher force than Bofana does the discard not happen. Jon Palmer, "Daigotsu Bofana", 15 Nov 2011
