Rules Q&A
- Q: OK, in November, I asked about Ogedei being affected by -X Chi tokens. But, people are disputing about other ways of Chi death. By his trait, is he immune from someone else using Written In Blood, Daigotsu Dojo, Shukumei, or any other current card that just creates a non-token Chi reduction?
A: Written in Blood, Daigotsu Dojo, and Shukumei are all cards. Their effects can't reduce Moto Ogedei's Chi if they are owned by a player other than Ogedei's controller, as per his card text: "Ogedei's Chi may no be reduced by effects from cards other players own." Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 December 2004", 15 Dec 2004 - Q: Just to confirm, if I play Contested Holding and take control of a Daigotsu Dojo while playing House of Tao, does this count as "bringing a Shadowlands card into play"? My guess: NO, the Daigotsu Dojo is already in play.
A: Good guess. It is already in play, so they didn't bring it into play. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 and 25 October 2004", 27 Oct 2004 - Q: 1/ Is paying for an action that bring a shadowland card into play, paying for a shadowland card ? ie : can Daigotsu Dojo pay for Jigoku Sensei ?
A: No. You are paying for an Ability on a Card that is Not Shadowlands. Daigotsu Dojo doesn't care about what that ability DOES, only that the card with the cost is Shadowlands - and Jigoku Sensei isn't, as per the Keyword Rule on Page 64 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook. Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 October 2004", 6 Oct 2004 - Q: For Keeper of Air & Co., the card reads to return "all rings to their owners hands TO get a ring." Can this be done if there are no rings in play?
A: Yes. If you have 0 Rings, then 0 = All your Rings. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18-21 August 2004", 29 Aug 2004 - Q: Several Shadowlands cards say "Produces x Gold for a Shadowlands card." Can this be used to pay for abilities that produce or get shadowlands cards (i.e. Daigotsu Dojo and Jigoku Sensei). I can see it either way so I am asking.
A: No. Producing "for an X card" only produces to pay the costs of a card that is of type X. Gold paid to the ability of Farmlands, for example, is not gold paid "for a Follower card," even though the ability in question makes a Follower. Jigoku Sensei is not a Shadowlands Card either. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18-21 August 2004", 29 Aug 2004 - Q: I asked this a while back, and Marty was 'consulting' Jeff.
It's my opponents turn, he targets a 3 chi personality of mine with a Daigotsu Dojo. I play Uncertainty on my 3 chi personality. He plays Written in Blood on my 3 chi personality.
So his chi is -2 for the purposes of adding bonuses and 1 due to Uncertainty's effect.
At the end of the turn, can he choose the order in which the three effects end, (ie Uncertainty, Daigotsu Dojo, Written in Blood) so that my personality dies as a result?
A: No. Since there is no conflict involved in ending all the effects at the same time, they all end at the same time. Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 August 2004", 9 Aug 2004 - Q: I have been hearing rumors of these two as an effective combo, but I don't really see it. If you choose to increase the numerals on Daigotsu Dojo with Sezaru's Gift, doesn't that reduce the penalty?
A: Sezaru's Gift says, "Kiho Limited: Bow one of your Shugenja or Monks and remove this card from the game to permanently increase or decrease one numeral on one Holding by 1. This may not be used to change a numeral to 0."
It can decrease or increase the numeral. Hence you can use it to magnify the chi penalty the Dojo creates. You could also counter-act this effect with additional copies of the Gift (use a Gift to reduce your opponent's boosted Dojo back to a more manageable level). The only thing you can't do with Sezaru's Gift is actually change the number to 0. (card text) Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 June 2004", 10 Jun 2004 - Q: Ok Daigotsu Dojo gives one of my personalities -1 chi and he now has 0. My personality dies from a rulebook affect instead of from another players action? So it wouldn't help me play Legions Charge correct?
A: Yes. That's actually one of the problems with chi-loss - it side-steps almost all of the meta printed to balance the targeted destruction of Personalities and Units, while metagame cards against chi-loss are pretty worthless against everything else in the game.
