Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm sure this is a relatively simplistic question, but I just wanted to be sure and clear: Will Heart of Shinomen Forest's Fear negation effect work on all actions with the Fear keyword - for example, Daigotsu Hotako?
Card text from the oracle:
Heart of the Shinomen Forest Forest Forests enter play for you paying 3 less Gold. Negate all Fear effects upon your Naga cards. If you control no Shadowlands cards, you may ignore Honor Requirements when bringing Naga cards into play. Your deck may include four copies of any non-Unique Naga card.
Daigotsu Hotako Spider Clan • Shadowlands • Samurai • Naval • Paragon • Experienced 3 • Unique • Obsidian Champion Enters play paying 2 less Gold if you are a Lion Clan player. After Hotako enters play: Lose 2 Honor. Fear Open: Target a Personality: He may not perform actions this turn.
Relevant Rules Text: Fear Some older cards have an abilities that read: "Fear Battle: Fear X". These abilities should generally be read as "Fear Battle: You may target a unit in the current enemy army. Bow all non-Undead Followers in it with Force less than or equal to X." Cards that refer to Fear "strength" only refer to Fear abilities written in this shorthand, not just any number in a Fear ability.
A: Yes, Heart of the Shinomen Forest will stop any action with the Fear keyword that affects your Naga cards, not just the old rulebook Fear effect. Jon Palmer, "Heart of the Shinomen Forest vs Fear", 8 Mar 2013 - Q: If use Daigotsu Hotako ability to target Yoritomo Hiromi, can Hiromi still use his battle action?
I found another thread which says that the "will not" is stronger than Hiromi's trait but I couldn't find a thread refering to the "may not". -> viewtopic.php?f=59&t=97679&p=1289707&hilit=yoritomo+hiromi#p1289707
So, basically I would like to know if Hotako's ability is a negation.
Thank you.
The cards text:
A: As is described here, "May not" is used to prevent choices, such as the choice to announce the use of Hitomi's action in this specific case.
Since you may not even announce the action since he may not perform it (and is the only possible Performer), then Hiromi's trait doesn't kick in to keep the action's effects from being negated.
Short answer, yes Hotaku trumps Hiromi. Ben Higgins, "Daigotsu Hotako vs Yoritimo Hiromi", 20 May 2012 - Q: Hey guys,
Quick question about Naval and Brothers in Battle (used search, didn't find it).
Brothers in Battle Battle/Open: Choose two or three of your performing Samurai: Each of them has +1F and the ability "Battle: Ranged 4 Attack" while in an army with one or more of the others.
Naval Invasion Reaction: After engaging, if you have more Naval personalities than your opponent, choose your performing attacking Naval Personality: you have the first opportunity to take a Battle action, which he must perform.
If you only have one Naval personality (say Daigotsu Hotako XP3, as is the most likely scenario in a non-Mantis game) and 2 other non-Naval Personalities, can you use Brothers in Battle and choose one Naval and 2 non-Naval performers as your Naval action?

A: Please search before asking questions. Alex Jones, "Naval and Brothers in Battle", 18 May 2012 - Q: Similarly, Yoritomo Hotako is singular, and her experienced is unique. Daigotsu [Hotako] Experienced 3 says nothing about "Yoritomo Hotako" anywhere on it (even though the experienced 2 says 'experienced Yoritomo Hotako 2') Does that mean that Yoritomo Hotako and Daigotsu Hotako (exp 3) can be controlled by the same player at the same time?
A: No, they may not, and that is covered here:
Legacy Format, Experienced: "Cards with Experienced X (Alternate Title) are considered to also have all alternate titles that the Alternate Title card has, for the purposes of deck construction, the Unique rule, and overlaying. Additionally, all higher Experience keyword levels of a card with an Experienced (Alternate Title) keyword are considered to have that alternate title. Example 1: Heigi's "Experienced 5 Akodo Ginawa" keyword is also considered to have the "Ginawa" alternate title, because Akodo Ginawa's Experienced 4 keyword does. Example 2: Shosuro's "Experienced 7" keyword is considered to have the Ninja Shapeshifter alternate title because her Experienced 1 version does."
