Rules Q&A
- Q: So Daigotsu Kanpeki is a personality in Kolat Edition (also upcoming, now pre-released emperor edition)
Daigotsu Kanpeki is also a holding from samurai edition. So a war of honor spider deck (or any sort of open or extended pre-EE legality play) cannot include the holding and the person in a deck at the same time because they are not explicitly different experienced levels? (obviously they can't be in play at the same time)
(I guess this also applies to 'the great bear' holding, since it doesn't specify an experience level either. It even makes sense story wise to be in the same deck as Hida Kisada since the great bear trained the little bear. I don't own that card so I care less though, but I suspect it should be mentioned for those searching for a Kisada vs. Kisada ruling.)
edit: woah, he does have the experienced keyword. How have I looked at him so many times and not noticed that. what a dumb question on my part.
A: If the cards have the same title and the same experience level, they may not be included in the same deck if both are Unique, per the deck construction rules. However, you might note that Daigotsu Kanpeki the Personality has the Experienced keyword. Jon Palmer, "Daigotsu Kanpeki and Daigotsu Kanpeki (no experience)", 21 Feb 2012 - Q: If I play "Again!" on my Kensai and later that battle attach a Weapon say via "Glory of the Shogun" or "Readied Steel" may I use the Battle abilities of that weapon a second time despite the fact that it was not attached at the time I played "Again!"?
Second If I use Daigotsu Kanpeki to preform "Again" can I use his reaction after the resolution of "Again" to take additional action, if so dose that occur before or after the additional action granted by "Again!"?
Relevant text
Again! Battle: Chose your performing Kensai: Straighten him and all his Weapons. Battle abilities on his Weapons may be used a second time this turn. You may take an additional Battle action.
Daigotsu Kanpeki Reaction: After the resolution of a Battle action from a Strategy, if Kanpeki performed it: Take an additional Battle action.
A: Attaching a weapon to a Personality who has been targeted by Again!, does not allow you to use its Battle abilties a second time this turn. The clause "his Weapons" is evaluated at the point in time when the effect is applied, which is immediately, in the case of an ongoing effect such as Again!'s. Compare Frenzy, which destroys the Personality's Followers through a delayed effect: "his attached Followers" is evaluated when the effect is applied - "Before the turn ends" - so Followers which have been transferred out of his unit are not destroyed by Frenzy.
For more information on "activating" vs "applying" effects, see Abilities and Actions, Action Resolution.
For your second question, see Additional action: When an additional action is granted while a non-Reaction action is in progress, the timing of the additional action is delayed: the opportunity to take it happens once the current non-Reaction action has ended, and once the opportunity to play Reactions to the end of the action has passed. This makes sure that Battle actions can not occur within other Battle actions, or Limited/Opens within other Limited/Opens. The additional actions granted by Again! (first emphasis) and by Kanpeki's ability (second emphasis) are both delayed to the same point in time, so the active player decides which action is taken first. Alex Jones, "More "Again!" Questions", 10 Jan 2012 - Q: Other than personalitys are any other dynasty cards considered Spider Clan cards
(how come i can't reply to my post) so a spider clan player will lose honor for playing Daigotsu Kanpeki(holding) and house of the dead(holding from spider ultimate clan pack)
A: No.
See Clan Alignment: Only players and Personalities can have a Clan alignment.
And Strongholds, of course! Alex Jones, "Spider Clan Cards ?", 18 Aug 2008 - Q: This is a follow-up question regarding my post about Daigotsu Kanpeki (here), which was poorly worded and hence confusing.
If there is a card that has an ability that e.g. reads "Once per game: Search your Dynasty deck[...]" (like Daigotsu Kanpeki with regards to the search for Daigotsu or Kayomasa) and this cards temporarily changes control until the end of turn, does once per game mean once per game or does it rather mean once per game per player/controller?
A: "Once per game/turn/battle" is a total, not a per-player limit. If a player uses the ability on a copy of Daigotsu Kanpeki, no other player can use the ability on that copy of Daigotsu Kanpeki for the rest of the game (unless the usage is "forgotten" because the card has become face down and out of play). Alex Jones, "Gaining Control of Holdings & Daigotsu Kanpeki's Ability", 20 Jun 2008 - Q: When a player gains control of (Daigotsu) Kanpeki(...)is he or she allowed(...) to use the ability(?)
A: Yes.
"Your" refers to the controller (http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_X-Z).
