Rules Q&A
- Q: Essentially: Does using an Item attatched to a personality to perform a Ranged Attack count as the Personality performing the Ranged Attack like a Spell? Can Shinjo Xushen (non-exp.) with a Daikyu do any or all of the following when assigned as infantry?
1. Bow the Daikyu for a Ranged 4 Attack. 2. Bow the Daiky and himself for a combined Ranged 7 or 8 Attack?
My thoughts are that they are not performed by the personality, but soley by the Item, I just want confirmation. Thanks.
A: Keep in mind that "from" and "performed by" are not the same thing. Actions are "from" the card with the Action, regardless of who performs them.
As for who does the Performing, look at criteria #2 on page 71 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook: "Actions on an Item, Spell, or Ancestor are performed by its Personality."
Xushen performs the Actions of his attached Items. Any Ranged Attacks from Xushen's items benefit from his trait.
As for combining Ranged Attacks, the only care where the Ranged Attack is from, not who performs it. Since Daikyu is a different card than Xushen, they can be combined. Since Daikyu doesn't require you to bow Xushen, you can pay all the costs. That means you can bow them both for a combined Ranged 6 attack, or 8 if Xushen assigned as Infantry. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 September 2004", 7 Sep 2004 - Q: Can I trigger his other reaction and bow Latomu for a Ranged 4 attack and bow the Daikyu to perform a combined Ranged 7 attack?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 December 2003", 1 Dec 2003 - Q: Is Daikyu 1 focus now as of Diamond?
A: Yes (card text). Wasn't in the Archive yet because I hadn't noticed it. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 24 November 2003", 24 Nov 2003 - Q: Can Latomu combine his built in ranged attack with that of the Daikyu?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 November 2003", 10 Nov 2003 - Q: b) For example can 'Xushen' with a Daikyu attatched for a 6 point ranged attack?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 May 2003", 13 May 2003 - Q: Jeff, a few days ago a question was posted about Shinjo Xushen with a Daikyu. It was ruled that he could only create a ranged 7 if he assigned as infantry. However, after reading your latest ruling and reading the H&E rule sheet that says that the action on the item is performed by the personality, that says to me that Xushen is not only creating his own ranged 4, but a 3+1 from the Daikyu for a potential 8. Can you clarify this please?
A: A combined ranged attack is one attack (and one action). There will be only one +1 bonus. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 April 2003", 26 Apr 2003 - Q: That is, if Chen bows to use the Horsebow, is he precluded from using the Daikyu (or Horsebowmen or Archers or any other item or follower with a Ranged Attack) later on in the battle, simply because Chen is now bowed?
A: Actions on unbowed cards attached to a bowed Personality can still be used [GE p. 24] provided their actions don't target him or require him to bow as part of the cost. Something the Gold rulebook doesn't mention, since it came up after it was printed, is that Spells are an exception to this rule. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 February 2003", 5 Feb 2003 - Q: --- In, Jeff Alexander 5) Moto Chen again, this time it is a daikyu and an shinjo horsebow, which ranged attacks could Chen make?
He can combine the Daikyu with either of the Horsebow's ranged attacks, for a total strength attack of 5 or 7, depending on whether he bows the Horsebow or himself.
Then I will need a clearer wording on the page 63 rulebook text in italics which reads:
"You cannot combine a ranged attack on an Item with one on the Personality carrying it if the Personality has to bow to make the ranged attack."
A: Easy. That rule does not apply in this case. Chen does not have a ranged attack ability "on him". They are all on his Items.
(And to clear up the ambiguity in the rule: "the ranged attack" at the very end refers to the one on the Item.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 February 2003", 4 Feb 2003 - Q: and the accumulated ruling :
Ranged Attacks may be combined if their sources (i.e., where the action in printed in ink) are on different cards. What card "performs" the Ranged Attack is irrelevent. [JA, 29 March 2002] Note that this does not override the prohibition on combining Ranged Attacks on Personalities and Items when the Personality bows for one of the Ranged Attacks (Dark Allies rulebook, page 63). [ZF, 13 July 2002]
since the wording implies that the Daikyu and Horsebow cannot be combined if the personality bows.
A: Although I'd agree it interprets the rulebook rule too broadly, it still only addresses the issue of combining an attack on an Item with one on the Personality. Attacks from two Items are different. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 February 2003", 4 Feb 2003 - Q: 3)I assign Shinjo Xushen with a Daikyu attached during infantry phase is the strength of the ranged attack form the daikyu a 3 or a four?
A: Four. Xushen's trait uses the word "perform", and by the rulebook, a Personality "performs" his Items' actions. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30-31 January 2003", 1 Feb 2003 - Q: Greetings! Does Xushen's ability affect items attached to him like Fox Nagamaki and Daikyu?
"If Xushen assigns during Infantry Maneuvers, he gains +1F and +1 strength to any ranged attacks he performs until the end of the attack phase."
A: Since he uses the term "perform", it would indeed apply to any ranged attacks on his Items, by the latest rulebook. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 April 2002", 18 Apr 2002 - Q: they are attached to, can you use them if the personality is bowed (like Daikyu)?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 April 2002", 18 Apr 2002
