Rules Q&A
- Q: 1. If you Determination/Ambush a Personality, and the personality is destroyed as a result, is he removed from play? 2. Can you Will or Death After Life a Personality into an Ambush if you are the attacker? 3. Can Detmermination/Misdirection be used to redirect Determination/Ambush?
Ambush: Limited: Target one of your unbowed Personalities: Create a battlefield (not at any province). Assign your Personality to attack there. Assign another player’s target Personality to defend there, even if bowed. No other units may move there. Fight a battle there. After it ends, lose 5 Honor.
Determination: Dark Virtue Reaction: Before you announce an action, target one of your Samurai: The action can not have its effects negated or have its targeting changed. After the action destroys any Personality, remove him from the game.
Will: Dark Virtue Battle: If there are any enemy units at the current battlefield, target a dead Samurai Personality you own: Bring him into play there, paying 2 less Gold and ignoring Honor Requirements.
Death After Life: Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed during battle: Lose 5 Honor. Target a dead Personality in your discard pile, or in any discard pile if you are a Spider Clan player. Permanently give him Shadowlands and Undead. Bring him into play in your current army, ignoring restrictions (paying all costs).
Misdirection: Political Gozoku Reaction: Before another player would choose targets for one of his action’s effects during a battle, target one of your Courtier or Gozoku Personalities: You choose the targets instead.
A: 1. If you Determination/Ambush a Personality, and the personality is destroyed as a result, is he removed from play? No. Cards destroyed by battle Resolution are destroyed by a rulebook effect, not by Ambush.
2. Can you Will or Death After Life a Personality into an Ambush if you are the attacker? Yes. Ambush stops movement; it doesn't stop cards being brought into play at the battlefield.
3. Can Determination/Misdirection be used to redirect Determination/Ambush? Misdirection can only be played "during a battle", ie during the Combat & Resolution segments. You cannot change the targeting of Ambush with Misdirection, with or without Determination. Alex Jones, "Ambush, Determination, Will and Death After Life", 11 Apr 2008 - Q: if Etsui XP1 is targeting my persnality, can i determination a doomed or other movement card ?
A: Who?
Mod nudge: Please use complete card titles when asking questions. Thanks! Zen Faulkes, "Loyal and Death After Life", 12 Mar 2008 - Q: I as a Spider clan payer bring Chagatai into play from the other's discard pile(he is death). Can I?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "About Death After Life and Loyal", 27 Nov 2007 - Q: If I can, with the card. What happens at the end of the battle?
A: Because the Loyal restriction has been waived, you now control it, and it goes to your home. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "About Death After Life and Loyal", 27 Nov 2007 - Q: Will Etsui effects still apply even if he came back from the dead?
A: That is, "Do cards 'remember' things when they've been out of play?" Yes, unless they were also face-down. See http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui Exp. and Death After Life", 22 Sep 2007 - Q: What if after he brings Etsui I send Daigotsu home, can he come back to battle by any means that does not envolve killing or bowing Etsui?
A: Too broad to say definitively, but probably not. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui Exp. and Death After Life", 22 Sep 2007 - Q: If I have only one defending unit and no one dead on my discard pile after my random Personality dies during a battle can I use Death After Life to bring him back? I had that doubt yesterday when I read the card and saw that it says "After one of your personalities is detroyed..."
Does this after mean that he'll be already at discard pile and I may chose him?
Death After Life
Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed during battle: Lose 5 Honor. Target a dead Personality in your discard pile, or in any discard pile if you are a Spider Clan player. Permanently give him Shadowlands and Undead. Bring him into play in your current army, ignoring restrictions (paying all costs).
[Mod edit: Slang removed. -ZF]
A: Yes, you can return someone who was destroyed.
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60163 Zen Faulkes, "Death After Life", 6 Sep 2007 - Q: Opponent plays Mountains of the Phoenix. So before resolution he destroyes his one bowed personality and react with Death After Life bringing that personality back to play unbowed in the army. Can he do stuff like that?
A: It would help if the question were more specific.
Nothing illegal. Zen Faulkes, "Death After Life and stuff", 30 Aug 2007 - Q: He lost a battle. All units destroyed honor gained blabla and can he react with Death After Life to the destruction of one of his personality in the Battle Resolution?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#Choose_Battlefield: "''During a battle' includes both the Combat and Resolution Segments." Zen Faulkes, "Death After Life and stuff", 30 Aug 2007 - Q: What happends to that personality if the current province is destroyed?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#Resolution_Segment. That would be at point B in the sequence. You then got to C. Then to "After Resolution." Zen Faulkes, "Death After Life and stuff", 30 Aug 2007 - Q: When a battle resolution kills your army and you use Death After Life, where will the personality go?
A: "...in your current army" (card text). Which promptly goes home. Zen Faulkes, "Re: Life After Death, only unit", 6 Aug 2007 - Q: (D)oes (Loyal) stop checking immediately after it is brought into play, thus letting the aforementioned cards work?
A: Yes.
You don't discard Followers whose honor requirement is above 0 when their Personality is dishonored, either. Zen Faulkes, "Re: Death After Life and Loyal", 6 Aug 2007 - Q: Can you use Death After Life or Let Them Fight Their Dead to bring a Loyal Personality to your side of the field?
A: Rules, Glossary, Restriction: "Honor Requirements are a type of restriction, as are the Loyal, Unique and Singular rules." Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Death After Life and Loyal", 6 Aug 2007 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=59976
Does it matter that the wording on Death After Life is "during battle" and not "during a battle?" In other words, can "during battle" be taken to means during the Combat Segment rather than during a specifc battle in that segment?
Does this haev any relevance here: From the Comprehensive Rulings - Effects that occur between phases or segments resolve in the order of the phase or segment they refer to. E.g., an effect occuring "after the Events Phase" resolves before one occuring "before the Action Phase." [ZF, 10 August 2001] * Similarly, effects such as "after" or "before" a turn (e.g., Suitengu's Surge) count as happening in the turns they reference. Thus, once per turn limitations must still be obeyed. [ML, 5 January 2005]
Would something happening "after the battle ends" actually be happening during that battle?
Thanks!
A: No.
The difference in wording does not matter. If the wording said, "at a battlefield," and your unit was not sent home as an attacking or allied unit, then it might work.
Neither ruling is applicable.
The first specifies that triggers from "after the Combat Segment" always go before triggers, "before the Resolution Segment."
The second specifically applies to Game Turns, not Phases or Segments. Martin Lund, "Death After Life + Wedge (2)", 2 Aug 2007 - Q: I am resolving my first battle. I Wedge a unit. I respond to the destruction from Wedge with Death after Life. Is my current army at battle 1 or battle 2? Does anything change if I am resolving my last battle when I do this?
Thanks!
A: Wedged doesn't kill your unit "during a battle." It kills them "after the battle ends" (card text).
That's not a valid trigger for Death After Life, if I read the card correctly. Martin Lund, "Death After Life + Wedge", 2 Aug 2007
