Rules Q&A
- Q: Countermove: Tactical Battle: Target your Tactician who is not at the current battlefield: Target one of the enemy leader's Personalities who is not at the current battlefield. Move both targets to the current battlefield. Straighten their units.
Hamstrung: Reaction: Before the resolution of an action: Choose a Personality. Negate his movement into attacking armies from the action.
Question: I've searched the forum for this, but only found an answer containing Ambush.. and this one: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=80454&p=1052218&hilit=unpredictable+strategy#p1052218 According to this, if I hamstrung Unpredictable, both movements are negated.
Anyhow, I have Akodo tactician X, my opponent has defender chode Y. I declare a battle, assign nobody, use Countermove to move in both X and Y. My opponent reacts with Hamstrung. Who moves? X, Y, neither? Who straightens? X, Y, neither.
A: Unpredictable Strategy uses the defined game term Switch, which involves moving two units in opposite directions as one effect, so that if one movement is negated the other will also fail.
Countermove moves the two units to the current battlefield, but these are separate movements: there is no dependency between them. If the movement of one unit fails, the other unit will still move. Furthermore, the straightening of each unit is independent of any movement: even if one or both movements fails, both units will straighten. Alex Jones, "Countermove vs Hamstrung", 16 Mar 2011 - Q: Player A plays Lion. He has an Akodo`s Guidance in play and is attacking with a 3PH personality (i.e. Ikoma Hagio). Thanks to the Guidance Hagio has 4PH while attacking.
Player B defends with Seppun Tashime exp. (4PH).
Can Player A discard the Guidance and destroy Ikoma Hagio to destroy Tashime? Or would the action fail, because the +1PH bonus is gone (Hagio is dead and no longer attacking), before Tashime would be destroyed?
Thank you!
Akodo`s Guidance Kami • Unique Attacking Lion Clan Personalities have +1F and +1PH. Battle: If you are a Lion Clan player, discard this card and destroy your target Lion Clan Personality: Destroy a target enemy Personality with equal or lower Personal Honor.
A: The targeting requirement ("enemy Personality with equal or lower Personal Honor") is checked before costs are paid, ie before Hagio is destroyed.
See Abilities and actions, Using abilities. Alex Jones, "Akodo`s Guidance", 27 Apr 2010 - Q: If I have a Lion shugenja in play and attach a non-Lion ancestor to him, is the ancestor immediately destroyed?
A: No. Older cards were a little less strict in their wording, so this should not be interpreted as any sort of change to the meaning of attach on Samurai Edition cards. Alex Jones, "Noble Halls of the Akodo and Ancestors", 3 Sep 2008 - Q: Do I still have the option of attaching an ancestor to a personality during my Limited phase, bowing it as normal?
A: Yes. Because it's an attachment, you can attach it using any ability that allows you to attach one, eg the standard Equip Limited ability - with the additional cost, as stated a few lines down, of bowing the Personality. Alex Jones, "Noble Halls of the Akodo and Ancestors", 3 Sep 2008 - Q: re:http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66705
It changes who is choosing the targets, which is what misdirection looks for.
I play a draw your blade. I target your Akodo Chump and dishonor my guy to ignore any attachments and what not.
You react and before I target Akodo chump, you choose to target my guy instead. you have now chosen targets for your actions effect. the effect of misdirection is you choose the targets.
I then react with my own misdirection. "Before another player" (you) "would choose targets" (which is what you're doing due to your copy of misdirection. it precisely says you are now choosing targets) "for one of his action's effects" (the effect of misdirection, your action: You choose the targets instead.) and point the effect back to akodo chump.
Misdirection is an action, it has an effect of choosing targets, which is what the trigger on misdirection is looking for, another player choosing targets due to an action they took.
A: Misdirection does not target anything.
"Chooses targets for one of his action's effects," specifically means any targeting in the Effects block of the ability in question.
Misdirection itself does not target anything, and the targets you choose are for the effects of the originating Action, not "for the effects of" Misdirection.
I definitely see how you could pose the semantic argument the you are "choosing a target for misdirection's effect," but that particular phrase is used as jargon to refer to a very specific game mechanic (choosing the target of an action) and alters the game state / game rules to allow you to make that Action's targeting decisions. It is not used in the more general sense open to subjective interpretation.
Misdirection will not help you get around another player's Misdirection. Martin Lund, "misdirecting misdirection", 26 Mar 2008 - Q: What does "except bonuses from cards in the same unit." means from In search of the future's text?
A: Just what it says: bonuses on a unit generated by cards in that unit are not reduced. Zen Faulkes, "In search of the future and Akodo mirotai", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: Tangen sensei text reads: Reaction: After an action targets a card you control during an Attack Phase: Once per battle, redirect the action.
If an action targets a card I control like Akodo rokku's reaction to move a unit from another player's home into his battlefield during the maneuver segment can I redirect it to another card or personality I control infinite times thus stalling the game?
If a personality leaves play after I use one of his ability with a clause "Once per turn" then I reacted with feign death to bring him back into play again can that personality use his ability again on the same turn? Thank you
A: No (Diamond rules, pg. 75). Zen Faulkes, "Tangen sensei and once per turn abilities", 14 Mar 2005 - Q: For exemple ....

if i go in battle and do not have 10 honor may i put akodo into play ?

A: Yes, she can. Only Dynasty Recruiting from the Rulebook ability is "normal". Any other Recruiting effect is not. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 6 May 2026 - Q: Question- in Legacy
Akodo- does his battle action to put him into play require you to meet his Honor requirement?
