Rules Q&A
- Q: Stronghold: The Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion [PS8/GP4/SH1] Tireless Open: Name a Fate card, or name a Dynasty card in play. Negate the effects of the next action from a card with that title.
Holding: Deeds and Words Gold Cost: 2 Bow: Produce 2 Gold. Interrupt: If it is the Action Phase, reduce one of the Honor gains or losses from the action to 0. Destroy this Holding.
Question: If the target of Scorpion's Stronghold is my holding "Deeds and Words" and I use this holding. I Don't must destroy the holding??, because the ability from scorpion's stronghold negated the effect of my holding.
regards,
A: Under the Ivory Edition templating, the destruction of Deeds and Words is an effect, and thus would be negated by The Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion. Ben Higgins, "The Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion v/s Deeds and Words", 28 Jan 2014 - Q: Doesn't it follow that if i can rhetoric a rhetoric that i can use deeds not words to reduce the stolen gain to zero since there is a new trigger for it...
A: No, it does not.
There is a new instance of the SAME trigger for Rhetoric. But Rhetoric and Deeds and Words have DIFFERENT triggers. There will be no new instance of D&W's trigger (at least, not one that would matter; you could react to before Rhetoric's resolution with D&W, but Rhetoric's effects are not causing the gain or loss, so it would do nothing); the time point of "Before [the] resolution of [the action whose effects are causing the gain or loss]" has already passed. Brook Cunningham, "Rhetoric vs Deeds and Words", 13 Sep 2012 - Q: This came up in a game and I wanted to be sure it was legal. I used Hanabi to gain 4 honor. My opponent reacted with Rhetoric to gain the honor instead. I had a Deeds and Words in play and I used it to reduce the honor gain from Hanabi to 0.
Is this legal? Did the play prevent my opponent from stealing my honor? Thanks in advance.
A: Nope, not legal.
Rhetoric's trigger is right before the gain or loss occurs, during the effects. However, Deeds and Words' trigger is well before that, "Before the resolution of an action". So, when the other player plays Rhetoric, the time has passed when you could've reacted with Deeds and Words and it's too late (though maybe you were playing an older copy of D&W, where the trigger was the same as Rhetoric's, making your cheatery slightly more forgiveable ). Brook Cunningham, "Rhetoric vs Deeds and Words", 12 Sep 2012 - Q: If i use ' I give you my name to go get an oni' Can i react with ' Deeds and words' to reduce the entering play honor loss from my ony? Or will it only reduce the 2 honor loss from the spell?
Card Title I Give You My Name Cost 3 Keywords Maho Text Limited: Bow this Shugenja and destroy your target Human Personality: Search your Dynasty deck or discard pile for a non-Unique Oni with Gold Cost lower than or equal to the Human's Gold Cost plus the performer's Chi. Put the Oni into play, ignoring Gold cost. Lose 2 Honor. Focus Value 3
Card Title Deeds and Words Cost 2 Text Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. Reaction: Before the resolution of an action during the Action Phase, destroy this card: Choose one of the Honor gains or losses from its effects. Reduce it to 0.
I couldnt find anything under the search functions for this situation
A: Entering play honor losses are from traits, not from actions.
Deeds And Words cannot be used to reduce them to 0, even if they happen in the Action phase. Ben Higgins, "i give you my name and deeds and words", 3 Jun 2012 - Q: Only Actions Speak Text Reaction: After an action is announced: Negate all Honor gains until after the action's resolution. At that time if this negated any gains, negate all Honor gains until the end of this phase and draw a card. Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Personality: Bow a target enemy card with lower Force and without attachments. Bow its unit if your Personality has 7 or more base Force.
Deeds and Words Bow this holding: Produce 2 Gold. Reaction: Before a player gains or loses Honor during the Action Phase, destroy this card: Reduce the gain or loss to 0.
Hi,
I bowed my Acrobat Troupe to gain 2 Honor. My opponent reacts with Only Actions Speaks. I react with my Deeds and Words, negating my Honor gain to 0.
Question: 1) Will he still draw a card? 2) Can I still gain any honor afterwards, since the wording on Only Actions Speaks, he didn't negate any honor gain per se since I negated it via Deeds and Words.
Thanks!
A: The interactions of these cards have been discussed before, here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=84015
Search box is everyone's friend. Even I don't give it enough love. Zen Faulkes, "Only Actions Speaks and Deeds and Words", 9 Aug 2010 - Q: Relevant texts: ONLY ACTIONS SPEAK (OAS) Reaction: After an action is announced: Negate all Honor gains until after the action's resolution. At that time if this negated any gains, negate all Honor gains until the end of this phase and draw a card. DEEDS AND WORDS Reaction: Before a player gains or loses Honor during the Action Phase, destroy this card: Reduce the gain or loss to 0.
I gain honor during the action phase, my opponent uses OAS reacting to my announcing the honor gain.
Can I use Deeds and Words to negate my honor gain before I gain honor? If I negate my own honor gain using Deeds, will OAS negate all Honor gains until the end of the phase and draw a card?
A: Please use the search function before asking questions.
See here. Alex Jones, "Deeds and Words vs. Only Actions Speak", 10 Jun 2010 - Q: Is the negation of an honor gain considered to be an honor loss?
For example: If Only Actions Speak is used on an action during the action phase (lets say Acrobat Troupe's action), can I then use Deeds and Words to prevent the honor negation and still gain the 2 honor that Acrobat Troupe's action would normally provide?
A: No. Negation of a gain is not treated as creating a loss. Alex Jones, "Only actions Speak & Deeds and Words", 5 Jun 2010 - Q: Is it possible to react with Deeds and Words when an opponent tries to rehonor a personality with My Father's Shrine?
A: No. Rehonoring and Deed and Words are both triggered before an honor gain, and triggered effects like rehonoring come before Reactions (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Timing_sequence). Zen Faulkes, "Deeds and Words + Rehonoring", 6 Mar 2010 - Q: Can you play Deeds and Words to negate the rehonoring of dishonorable personalities in battle resolution?
A: No, for two reasons.
First, the Attack Phase is not the Action Phase.
Second, the rules will stop the honor gain from happening before a Reaction can (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Timing_sequence). Zen Faulkes, "Battle resolution rehonoring vs. Deeds and Words", 9 Nov 2009 - Q: With the card "Ambush" I target one of my personalities and my opponent's "Pekkle no Oni". (for the sake of realism) I use sneak attack and in some way kill Pekkle no Oni. May my opponent use deeds and words to negate the honor loss from Pekkle no Oni's death?
A: Yes. Ambush and similar cards do not create an Attack Phase (http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#Battles). Zen Faulkes, "Deeds and Words; Pekkle; Ambush", 17 Mar 2009
