Rules Q&A
- Q: About this.
I'm aware you can react regardless of place (not in this case, but that's the card making an exception), but can I target another Player's Personality at home if my Kensai is at the current battlefield?
A: Reactions are not subject to the Rules of Presence or Location, so there are no restrictions upon what they can target during the Combat Segment.
However, I added a clarification above and will reiterate here: Pinned Down does NOT even actually "target" the Personality whose movement its player wishes to prevent. Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: Would my opponent be able to use Pinned Down to stop this?
A: Yes. Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: When would he play it?
A: Right after the Terrain enters play, which is before it resolves, per Pinned Down's text. (And from here: "the Strategy card enters play at the current battlefield as a rulebook effect, before the Terrain action resolves.") Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: When would he target Akuma no Oni?
A: During the resolution of Pinned Down's action, well before you select your Personality for your Terrain's delayed effect.
EDIT: Also, as a clarification, he is not targeting Akuma but rather "choosing" him; slightly different. Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: If he is required to target Akuma no Oni before it comes time for me to select a unit to move, would I be able to select a different unit instead?
A: Yes. Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: If I destroyed the bowed weapon or the Kensai before the time for movement would that cancel the Pinned Down?
A: No. The cost has already been paid, and the effects already applied. Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: If the Deployed Reinforcements Terrain is destroyed/removed before the battle's resolution, does that cancel movement?
A: Yes. (Again, from here: "If a Terrain leaves play before a battle’s Final Steps, its ongoing effects end, and its delayed effects will no longer be applied.") Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: Finally, what other things could prevent the movement from the Deployed Reinforcements?
A: It's a little beyond the scope of the Rules Team to provide an exhaustive list of such things, sorry. Brook Cunningham, "Deployed Reinforcements and Pinned Down", 30 Aug 2011 - Q: Since the effect of the action is only putting the terrain into play(...)
A: No. The immediate effect of Deployed Reinforcements is putting the Terrain into play. Targeting, moving, and straightening are still effects of Deployed Reinforcements, even though they are delayed.
[Additional: Slight correction / clarification: The only immediate effect when the Terrain is played is the Terrain entering played, but it is a rulebook effect, not a card effect.] Zen Faulkes, "Deployed Reinforcements + Hamstrung", 1 Aug 2010 - Q: (T)hat personality would still move, correct?
A: Incorrect. "Negate his movement... from the action" applies to all effects of the action, not just the immediate ones. Zen Faulkes, "Deployed Reinforcements + Hamstrung", 1 Aug 2010 - Q: When I attack with Bayushi Miyoto and in my home Takuma->with attached flawless assasin and Suboru ; can i move before this battle resulation takuma and suboru to current battlefield or suboru current battlefield and takuma another battlefield ? (miyoto is bowed but in current battlefield).
and another question is attacked with nitsu. can i change location with takuma->with flawless assasin (takuma on my home)
used nitsu action ? or sogetsu .etc
reaction time is important for this ? active player or not. maybe ?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Flawless Assassin:
Limited: Give a target Personality without a Poison token a -1F Poison token. Reaction: After one of your Personalities moves to or from this unit's location, if this unit has no non-Ninja Personalities or Followers: Move this unit to any location
Deployed Reinforcements:
Terrain
Battle: Before this battle's resolution, if you control any units at the current battlefield, you may target a unit in your home and move it to the current battlefield. Straighten it if it moved.
A: Yes, Flawless Assassin works as you described. After any of the movements in your examples, Flawless Assassin's Reaction is triggered and may be used to move its unit to any location.
Active player doesn't matter. Brook Cunningham, "Flawless Assassin, Nitsu and Deployed Reinforcements ?", 5 Mar 2010 - Q: I played Deployed Reinforcements(.) My opponent wants to play stand down to stop my movement.
A: Not legal.
Stand Down is triggered "after the resolution of an action."
Actions resolve after all immediate effects or when a delayed effect is activated (not resolved). (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... resolution). The movement on Deployed Reinforcements is a delayed effect that resolves later; long after the trigger window for Stand Down has passed. Zen Faulkes, "Deployed Reinforcements vs stand down", 8 Feb 2010 - Q: My opponent (the attacker) plays deployed reinforcements. Can I play hamstrung... A) Immediately, choosing any personality (who may or may not be targeted by my opponent before battle resolution to move in)?
A: Yes. Not only can you play Hamstrung then, you can only play Hamstrung then.
Deployed Reinforcements only has delayed effects, so the action resolves (trigger for Hamstrung) before any of its effects happen. Zen Faulkes, "Deployed Reinforcements + Hamstrung", 21 Oct 2009 - Q: Regarding this: IMHO, Nagataka would have to die nevertheless.
Before a battle's resolution, if Nagataka is at the current battlefield: Destroy him. (emphasis added)
The active player can't choose to activate the triggered trait if he's at home, due to the condition. So there's no way of using the trait before moving Nagataka into the battle.
So if Nagataka is at home, you have to apply the delayed effect from the terrain before Nagataka's trait can trigger, then he moves, then the trait triggers (because now the condition is met and the timing window is still open for triggered effects not from reactions)
(OR, you can choose not to move him and have him live one more turn )
A: Just confirming that looks correct. Thanks for the addition. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Nagataka and Deployed Reinforcements", 13 Sep 2009 - Q: If I use Deployed Reinforcements to move in Akodo Nagataka, will he be destroyed by his trait or will its trigger have passed? Does who is the active player have any effect on it?
A: Delayed effects and triggered traits have the same timing, so active player picks. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Timing_sequence Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Nagataka and Deployed Reinforcements", 13 Sep 2009
