Rules Q&A
- Q: So I got into an argument and I'd just like a confirmation ruling please
In relation to this: http://alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... c#p1314974
If my opponent Proclaims, and passes his first opportunity to react to the proclaim, then I react with Rhetoric. Is there ANY opportunity for my opponent to react his Destructive Priorities before my Rhetoric has resolved?
Basically my opponent contests that after I react with Rhetoric, he has a chance to react to the original Proclaiming with Destructive before my Rhetoric resolves, whereas I said he can only react to my Rhetoric, and if he doesn't the Rhetoric resolves, then he has a chance to react to proclaiming with Destructive (where it'll be too late, as the Rhetoric has been resolved and applied to the honour gain).
Mod Nudge: Full card names, please.
A: Technically, both Rhetoric and Destructive Priorities react to the honor being gained, not to the use of the Proclaim reaction.
However, you're correct. Rhetoric must fully resolve in reaction to the honor gain before Destructive Priorities then gets a chance to react to the honor gain (if it passed the first time). We don't have a stack here. Jon Palmer, "Destructive Priorities + Rhetoric", 14 Nov 2012 - Q: Greetings, My opponent is about to gain Honor from an action effect during my turn. I'm reacting with Rhetoric to steal his gain. Can I then react with Destructive Priorities to make my opponent lose Honor instead?
Rhetoric Political Reaction: Before a player gains or loses Honor from an action's effects, bow your performing Courtier: Choose another player. If the Courtier's Chi is higher than or equal to the Honor gain or loss, the chosen player instead of the original player takes the gain or loss
Destructive Priorities Kata • Political You have the ability, "Political Reaction: Before you gain Honor during your turn, bow your performing Courtier: Negate the gain. Choose a player. He loses 2 Honor."
A: Yes. Both Rhetoric and Destructive Priorities have (essentially) the same trigger, "Before a player gains honor."
You will be able to react with Rhetoric, then your opponent may react to the same trigger or pass, then you get another opportunity to react to the same trigger with your Destructive Priorities. Ben Higgins, "Rhetoric and Destructive Priorities", 17 Jun 2012 - Q: Since I saw the ruling that said if a personality was gaining 2 honor and was dishonored and facing a Shiro Chugo deck and the Shiro Chugo player lowered the honor gain by 2, the dishonored player would still rehonor, then could I buy a courtier aligned with my clan with a base 0 PH for full and activate Destructive Priorities?
A: No, that's quite a different situation.
The reason the rehonoring still occurs in the example you gave is that rehonoring is substituted for the gain BEFORE Shiro Chugo has the chance to reduce it.
But a gain of 0 still = not a gain. So, gaining 0 Honor will not trigger Reactions such as Destructive Priorities'. Brook Cunningham, "Destructive Priorities", 14 Mar 2012 - Q: Hi,
I have to different questions about "The Great Silence".
1/One player uses ambush, maybe the active player but we do not care about. Within that combat segment, a player uses The Great Silence. Until when can't nobody play strategy ? - 1 - The active player chooses : the end of the current combat segment or the end of the current action phase. - 2 - The Kiho's player chooses. - 3 - The Ambush's player chooses. - 4 - There is no choice to make.
2/Refering to past rulings about the Ring of the Void (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=96015#p1270347), Can you confirm that there is no link between playing a strategy card and using an action on a strategy card in play ? Someone uses The Great Silence. Can anyone use the Political Reaction granted by the Destructive Priorities Kata card while the kiho prevent players to play strategies ?
Card text: The Great Silence: Battle/Open: Bow your performing Monk or Shugenja: No Strategies can be played until after the end of this Action Phase or Combat Segment. Ambush: Limited: Choose your performing unbowed Personality and target another player's Personality: Create a battlefield (not at any province). Assign your Personality to attack there. Assign the target to defend there, even if he is bowed. Other Personalities will not move there. Fight a battle there (after this action's resolution). After the battle ends, lose 5 Honor. Destructive Priorities: You have the ability, "Political Reaction: Before you gain Honor during your turn, bow your performing Courtier: Negate the gain. Choose a player. He loses 2 Honor."
Thanks in advance, Regards, Rémi.
A: 1. The answer is 4, there is no choice to make. A duration that ends at "X or Y" ends whenever either occurs, so whichever comes first, which in your example would be at the end of the Ambush Combat Segment.
2. I can confirm that "play a Strategy" =/= "use an action on a card in play". Play, definition: "As a verb, “play” can refer to: ... using a Strategy card by putting it into the resolution area..." Brook Cunningham, "The Great Silence", 2 Mar 2012 - Q: Which of the following count as an action from a non-kiho strategy for Ring of the Void, if any?
An action granted by a Kata such as Destructive Priorities? An action granted by Spirit of the Truth?
A: Actions taken using abilities granted to a player are "from" the card which granted the action.
Actions taken using abilities granted to a card are "from" the card to which the ability has been given.
Ring of the Void: After you resolve your fourth or later non-Kiho action from Strategies in one phase: ...
Glossary, From: Some things check to see if costs, effects, actions, targeting, or other game procedures come “from” a given source. The source is the card that the effect, action or targeting is printed on, or the rulebook if it is printed there. There are three exceptions: ... 3. Costs and effects of traits and abilities given to other cards, copied from other cards, or on created cards, come from the card they are currently on.
Glossary, On: An ability, a trait or a keyword on a card is one either printed on the card, or granted to it by some effect. Abilities granted to a player by cards or the rulebook are "on" the player, but come "from" their card or rulebook source.
Highlighting mine. Alex Jones, "Ring of the Void + Katas/Spirits", 1 Feb 2012 - Q: So I saw this, and it reminded me of this. And I just wanted to be clear. The change in the ruling is a direct result of the rules changes for Emperor, right? And not a reversal of the previous ruling?
Edited: to fix link, I swear it was there when I posted it. Weird!
A: You have a broken link in your post, but yes, Proclaim and Destructive Priorities work in conjunction under Emperor Edition rules. Jon Palmer, "Destructive Priorities and Proclaim", 27 Jan 2012 - Q: Regarding the first part of this thread: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=92526, I believe this to be an incorrect ruling:
I believe you would only gain 2 honor as per the Rules governing Overlaying:
Just want to make sure the rules in the Comprehensive Rules have not been changed.
A: Dang. Looked right at that page, but missed that text. Thanks for the catch. Zen Faulkes, "Destroying overlaid cards; Destructive Priorities", 19 Jul 2011 - Q: If i overlay an experienced personality and said personality dies from battle resolution does my opponent gain 4 honor for two cards or just the two for the one personality
A: 4. Honor gain is per card (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles#C._Resolution_Segment), and a stack is still multiple cards. Zen Faulkes, "Destroying overlaid cards; Destructive Priorities", 19 Jul 2011 - Q: If i trigger the effect of Destructive Priorities and have another one in my hand, can I play the second one and use its abilities again?
A: No rule prevents it. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Destroying overlaid cards; Destructive Priorities", 19 Jul 2011 - Q: Can I pay for full on Orikasa then bow her in reaction to Destructive Priorities and then use her reaction to unbow?
[Mod edit: Duplicate post removed. -ZF]
A: No, you may not.
If you buy Orikasa for her Honor, you gain that Honor before she enters play. You can't take her Reaction while she's out of play, and after she enters play, the timing for her reacting to that gain has passed. Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Orikasa and Destructive Priorities", 18 Jul 2011 - Q: I have in play: Destructive Priorities, Ebisu's Honesty, and a courtier. If I use the limited ability on Ebisu's Honesty to blow up a province and gain 4 honour, can I bow my courtier to negate the gain (which fails) but still cause my opponent to lose 2 honour? It looks like negating the gain is an effect not a cost.
A: Yes, you may do that, for the reason you stated. Brook Cunningham, "Ebisu's Honesty + Destructive Priorities", 7 Jul 2011 - Q: Thank you
A: You're quite welcome. Brook Cunningham, "Ebisu's Honesty + Destructive Priorities", 7 Jul 2011 - Q: If I have a 0PH personality that I can buy on the full for honor, can I trigger the reaction from Destructive Priorities despite the fact that he has 0 personal honor?
A: No, you may not.
An honor gain or loss of 0 is not considered a gain or loss for the purposes of triggering effects. Brook Cunningham, "Destructive Priorities and 0 PH Personalities", 5 Jul 2011 - Q: Someone reasoned that since the part of the limited ability said "Discard all your other katas" that you had to discard the ones in your hand as well.
A: Not so.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_D#Discard: "An effect that refers to discarding 'all cards' of a given type or keyword refers, by default, only to cards in play." Added emphasis. Zen Faulkes, "Question for Destructive Priorities", 28 Jun 2011 - Q: Just confirming, but in Emperor - you can use the same courtier you are Proclaiming to use Destructive Priorities, correct?
Logic is -> Courtier enters play -> Proclaim reaction triggers -> bow new Courtier to trigger Destructive Priorities, negating the Proclaim honor gain
Relevant wordings: Proclaim: "Reaction: After you bring a Personality in your province with your Clan alignment into play without Clan discount, if it is your turn: Gain Honor equal to his base Personal Honor."
Destructive Priorities: "Political Reaction: Before you gain Honor during your turn, bow your target performing Courtier to negate the gain and choose a player who loses 2 Honor."
A: Ugh, Proclaim. So many different versions... Alex Jones, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 13 Nov 2023
