Rules Q&A
- Q: What if Doji Domotai is in a duel and both sides focused a Kharmic strike. Would she first turn the duel into a win, then the 2nd kharmic would turn it into a draw so she would lose?
A: Kharmic Strike effects can and will be applied simultaneously without conflict. They change the parameters of determining the winner of a duel. The result upon resolution is "tie" regardless of stat-totals. Domotai's trait will cause her to win this artificially created tie no matter how many Kharmic Strikes were played to achieve that result. Martin Lund, "Rules for 9 September 2004", 13 Sep 2004 - Q: 2) Domotai naturally wins (including Rend the Soul, the combined Focus Values and Chi are higher than the opponent's). Rend the Soul 'notices' the win and converts the win into a tie. Then Domotai 'notices' the tie and converts the tie into a win. (When you have effects that can go back and forth like this, the guideline is to have the cycle happen once and once only.) Domotai wins, opponent dies.
3) Domotai naturally ties (the Focus Values + Chi are equal between Domotai and the opponent). Domotai 'notices' the tie and turns the tie into a win.
Then Rend the Soul 'notices' that Domotai won the duel and turns it back into a tie. Both duelists die.
You have to take a closer look at the ruling to realize that it's clarifying
the difference between results 2 and 3.
This rend the soul with domotai ruling, might be one of the most ignored rulings ever. You would think the cardinal rule of letting the active player decide the effects would somehow cancel this ruling out.
A: The rule you refer to applies to simultaneous contradictory effects. That isn't what's happening here. At any given time, only one of those two cards is trying to change something. The starting point is also clearly identifiable. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 26 Feb. 2004", 27 Feb 2004 - Q: if my opponent plays ruthless advance targeting my champ, let's say Doji Domotai x3 and i redirect through Seat of power to my Daidoji Akagi does my opponent have to pay 3g or 8g?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_R#Ruthless_Advance:
"Cost is set after targeting. Therefore:
"Cost need not be paid if changes occur after targeting (e.g., Kumade).
"Cost must be paid if changes to the unit Gold cost occur, or a new unit is selected in the announcement step (e.g., Misdirection, Turn of Fortune) or in the targeting step by a triggered effect or Reaction with "would target" (e.g., Seat of Power) or "when targeting" (e.g., Shosuro Aroru Experienced) timing, unless the new cost exceeds a player's ability to pay it completely." Zen Faulkes, "ruthless advance", 16 Feb 2008
