Rules Q&A
- Q: Just confirming I understand correctly how does this card work, because if I'm right it seems this card is very powerful.
Daidoji Murata: Recon Open: Target two provinces. During battles at their battlefields, actions may not be taken before the Defender's first chance to take a Battle action or Pass.
Does that mean that no player is allowed to play any kind of Reaction after armies engage (including the one in Akodo Hachigoro, the Naval reaction, or Sneak Attack, but also ten or so other cards) in the provinces targeted by Murata's Open? Reactions are actions too, after all. Would the players be forbidden to even announce them? Is this effect a negation? (My guess is No, it isn't)
A: You are correct in your guess, and your analysis.
Reactions like the one of Akodo Hachigoro and the Naval rulebook reaction would be illegal to announce at battlefields at provinces targeted by Daidoji Murata's Open action.
May not is not a negation. See here. Dan Jacobson, "Questions about Daidoji Murata", 19 Jan 2009 - Q: Akodo Hachigoro Reaction: If you are attacking, after armies at Hachigoro's battlefield engage: You may target one of the Defenders units, move it to Hachigoro's battlefield, and straighten it. You have the first oppurtunity to take a battle action or pass this battle.
Naval Reaction: If you are the Attacker and your current army has more Naval cards than the opposing army, once per battle after engaging, target your Naval Personality: You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action, which must be performed by the targeted Personality or one of his Naval Followers.
Say I have an attacking Army with both Akodo Hachigoro and a Naval personality Does the following work according to the rules 1. Armies Engage 2a. I declare Reaction: Hachigoro 2b. Opponent opportunity to declare Reaction 2c. I declare Reaction: Naval 3. Hachigoro's reaction Resolves. I can move a defender in and take an additional battle action 4. The Naval Reaction resolves and I can now take a Battle action (subject to the Naval rules) 5. The defender takes an action
If this doesn't work, can you please tell me what doesn't work and why
Many thanks
A: Answered here.
Akodo Hachigoro, the Naval Reaction and Sneak Attack all give the attacker "the first opportunity to take a Battle action or pass". Note that they do not grant additional actions, they just change who gets to take the first one - after that action, play proceeds in turn order. What? Does this also mean My Utaku Yu Pan's battle maidens don't get +1F bonus while attacking if I am just the ally who happens to be on the Attacker's side? Because seriously that's un-intuitive! There is no mention of "Attacker" on Hachigoro.
A: "While attacking" on a card that can be in an army is not the same as "when you are attacking," as "you" is the controller. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Hachigoro vs. Bayushi Muhito", 3 Apr 2008 - Q: Sample Scenario Lion and Crane alliance attack Scorpion
A: In any given Attack Phase, only one player is the Attacker, and only one player is the Defender. Other players are allies, if they are involved at all. Their units may be attacking or defending, or in attacking or defending armies, but the players are attacking or defending allies.
Only one of the Lion and Crane players is the Attacker; only that player can use Hachigoro's Reaction. Alex Jones, "Akodo Hachigoro vs. Bayushi Muhito", 3 Apr 2008 - Q: Refering to this post: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66805
Akodo Hachigoro: Reaction: If you are attacking, after armies at Hachigoro's battlefield engage: You may target one of the Defender's units, move it to Hachigoro's battlefield, and straighten it. You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action or pass this battle.
Bayushi Muhito: Reaction: After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield: Take an additional Battle action.
*Bolded sections are emphasized for argued points*
I don't see anything in Muhito's effect that allows it to override or negate Hachigoro's effects.
Did Muhito move? Yes.
Has the movement's action's effects resolved? No.
Hachigoro's ability distinctly says that it's player gets the first battle action. Muhito's says take an additional Battle Action. Would the correct chain not be that Muhito's action puts the opportunity for it's player to take an additonal Battle Action (though actually being the Defenders first action) after the Hacigoro's secured first action of this battle but before his own first regular action?
Basically:
1) Armies engage, Attacking player reacts with Hachigoro moving Muhito, securing first Battle Action or Pass option. 2) Defender reacts with Muhito, securing an additional Battle action. 3) Attacking player decides whether to take a Battle action or pass. 4) Defender takes his Muhito secured Battle action. 5) Defender takes his "first" Battle action.
A: No. Muhito gives you an additional action, outside the regular sequence. Hachigoro's last effect only affects the regular sequence.
So: 1) Armies engage, Attacking player reacts with Hachigoro moving Muhito. 1a) Defender reacts with Muhito, "securing" an additional Battle action. Hachigoro "secures" first Battle Action or Pass option. 2) Hachigoro's Reaction finishes resolving, so Defender takes the additional Battle action. 3) Other reactions to Engaging... 4) Decide who gets the first regular opportunity to play or pass - because of Hachigoro, this is the Attacker. 5) Attacker has his first regular Battle action opportunity. 6) Defender has his first regular Battle action opportunity.
Hope this clears that up! Alex Jones, "Akodo Hachigoro vs. Bayushi Muhito", 3 Apr 2008 - Q: Reaction: After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield: Take an additional Battle action.
Reaction: If you are attacking, after armies at Hachigoro's battlefield engage: You may target one of the Defender's units, move it to Hachigoro's battlefield, and straighten it. You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action or pass this battle.
A: Note that your opportunity to react occurs immediately after Hachigoro's reaction completes, which is before you begin to determine who gets the first Battle action in this battle. Alex Jones, "Akodo Hachigoro vs. Bayushi Muhito", 31 Mar 2008 - Q: One of the people in my gaming group has an annoying tactic to try to win games, which involves finding any awkward wording he can and manipulate it to his favor, and he tries to argue obviously wrong rulings until we concede to shut him up.
Such as last night. I declared an attack against him with my Lion army of Ikoma Noda, Akodo Shigetoshi xp, and Akodo Hachigoro. Hachigoro had a bowed Gate Gaurdsman attached. My friend had two Unicorn Shugenja out, neither with a Follower. Naturally, I figure I can pop my bowed Gate Gaurdsman to destroy one of his peeps without Followers, thanks to Shigetoshi. My friend then comes along and says he remembers a rule that says bowed cards can't pay costs at all. I try to explain to him that bowed cards can't pay the cost of bowing, but they can pay any other cost. I relent, because it was annoying, and just didn't assign. I was correct here, right?
Later on that night, I had the same army out, but this time with a straightened Gate Gaurdsman. However, my friend strikes again when I try to use Hachigoro's Reaction. Now, the trigger for Hachigoro's Reaction reads 'Reaction: If you are attacking, after armies at Hachigoro's battlefield engage:'. My friend tries to tell me Hachigoro's Reaction doesn't go off because he didn't assign any units to the defending army, thus only one army is engaging. He tried to tell me that because only one army was engaging, not two or more 'armies', I can't use Hachigoro's Reaction. Please tell me he's wrong about this.
A: He's wrong on both. Nothing prevents bowed cards from paying costs that they are able to pay. "When armies engage" is a timing point and does not require the presence of either army to allow reactions to said timing point. Chris Fuchs, "Need some clarification...", 31 Oct 2007 - Q: An action’s required targets consist of anything that is targeted by the player taking the action in the action's constraints or effects, unless the targeting is shown to be optional by terms such as “may target,” or “lose 2 Honor or target a Personality you control.”

Does This Make it so you can take the first action even if a Naval battle is Declared?
A: In Samurai Edition, there's no such thing as a Naval invasion any more. Reactions are no longer prohibited. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Hachigoro vs a Naval Attack/Battle", 27 Jun 2007 - Q: Akodo Hachigoro: Under SE, all effects resolve simultaneously
