Rules Q&A
- Q: Doji Hayaku+Ambush Duel
Hayaku: Reaction: Before Hayaku is destroyed: Produce a ranged attack with a strength equal to Hayaku's Personal Honor.
Ambush Duel Limited: Bow one of your Personalities with a ranged attack ability on himself or on one of his Items to have him challenge another Personality. If the challenge is refused, gain 3 Honor, and the other Personality may not assign to battles this turn. During the duel, each Personality adds the highest non-variable ranged attack strength from his own or his Items' actions to his Chi.
Can I make use of ambush duel with Hayaku's reactionary range attack, Yes or no?
A: [MARTY] Hayaku has a Ranged Attack ability on his card. There isn't any question about that. It is a Reaction, thus an Ability. It produces a Ranged Attack. Who could ask for anything more?
- Marty Lund Deputy Rules Monkey Martin Lund, "Rules for 18 November 2004", 22 Nov 2004 - Q: This is a timing question...
Let's say my opponent is attacking my province with a 10F unit and a 4F personality with no attachments. I only assign Hayaku (with 4PH) to defense, and play Overwhelmed as my first action as the defender.
Does Hayaku's destruction and subsequent ranged attack occur before the attacker decides what to do about the Overwhelmed, or can he send both of his units home, not leaving a legal target for Hayaku's reaction?

Doji Hayaku
Reaction: Before Hayaku is destroyed: Produce a ranged attack with a strength equal to Hayaku's Personal Honor.
Quote:
Overwhelmed
Battle: As a cost, destroy your Personality in this battle with the highest Force, who must be unbowed. (In the case of a tie, choose one). The opposing player chooses either to destroy one Personality with the highest Force in his army or send two units in his army home without bowing. He must choose to destroy a Personality if he cannot send two units home.
Thanks!
A: The sequence goes a little something like this:
Announced overwhelmed.
Target Hayaku.
Go to pay costs by destroying Hayaku.
Respond before you destroy Hayaku by shooting something.
Destroy Hayaku. Pay 0 Gold.
Resolve Effects of Overwhlemed.
Opponent makes decision on which effect to deal with. Martin Lund, "Doji Hayaku + Overwhelmed", 11 Apr 2005 - Q: (W)hat constitutes a variable and a non-variable ranged attack?
A: Diamond rules, pg. 105: "Not known until the time it is used or needed." That is, can it be calculated at that point? Variable does not mean "capable of changing at some time over the course of the game."
Anything that says, "Ranged Attack equal to (number of something in play)" or ""Ranged Attack equal to (visible stat)" is not variable. Zen Faulkes, "Doji Hayaku / Ambush Duel / Variable ranged attacks.", 9 Apr 2005 - Q: Zee with one single ratling pack token follower attacks Crane province. Defenders assigns Hayaku. Plays To Do What We Must on rats unit.
A: This one, because Hayaku's Ranged Attack is before his destruction: Zen Faulkes, "Doji Hayaku / To Do What We Must / Few Against Many", 25 Mar 2005 - Q: If a card, such as "Strike and Move", requires that it be formed by a Daidoji personality, may Doji Hayaku, with the Daidoji Family Founder trait, meet that particular requirement?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Hayaku is Daidoji", 16 Feb 2005
