Rules Q&A
- Q: So, I have Doji Jotaro. I read the Rule of Presence as saying that he meets the third qualification - he targets a card (personality) attacking one of your provinces. Therefore, he could be at Home and do this.
A: You can use him from your home, but only so long as you control another unit at the current battle. Martin Lund, "Rules for 1 May 2004", 4 May 2004 - Q: However, then I read the example in the DE rulebook about Earthquake. It says clearly that the Shugenja casting it must be in the battle. So, that leads me to think that Doji Jotaro must be in the battle to use his ability.
A: Earthquake's ability uses the word "opposing" to describe its target. That means that the target of Earthquake must oppose the personality casting Earthquake. This can only happen if both the target and caster are in armies opposed to one another in battle. Martin Lund, "Rules for 1 May 2004", 4 May 2004 - Q: Doji Jotaro does not need to be in the current battle to dishonor an attacking personality, I only need to have someone else be at the battle, correct?
A: Diamond rules, pg. 81: correct. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 December 2003, Part 2", 3 Dec 2003 - Q: Doji Jotaro tries to Rhetoric my gain so I respond with Enough Talk! Now which duel should resolve first[?]
A: Actions in L5R resolve completely, one at a time (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 47). The last action was Enough Talk! That must finish first. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 8 September 2003", 9 Sep 2003 - Q: or to a Doji Jotaro to dishonor an additional personality? .
A: That doesn't work because the action is on Jotaro, and actions on bowed cards cannot be used.
A big point I need to make here about Diplomatic Apprentice: it does not have an action. It has a TRAIT that kicks in when its Personality tries to take an action. The rule on page 24 does not apply to Diplomatic Apprentice. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 March 2003", 25 Mar 2003 - Q: Doji Jotaro Political Battle: Bow to dishonor a human personality attacking one of your provinces.
Does Jotaro have to be at the battle to take this action or do I simply have to have presence?
A: Just satisfy Presence and Relevance -- you must have a unit there (any unit, not necessarily Jotaro), and either Jotaro or the target have to be in the current battle. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30 September 2002", 1 Oct 2002 - Q: His wording's a little wonky. It sounds like whether or not he's at the current battlefield, he can dishonor an attacker at any battlefield. It specifically states he doesn't have to be at the current battlefield to use his ability, and the effect doesn't follow suit by specifically saying it has to be the current battlefield. Can I get a ruling?
And yes, I love italics.
A: Rule of Location:
"This rule has two parts: 1. Any cards in units must be at the current battlefield to be legally targeted by a Battle action. 2. If a Battle action is on a card in a unit (a Personality or attachment in play), the unit must be at the current battlefield in order to take that action."
Doji Jotaro's "Even if Jotaro is not at the current battlefield" clause lets you ignore part 2, but you must still obey part 1. The targeted attacker must be at the current battlefield. Alex Jones, "Doji Jotaro", 12 May 2008
