- The once per turn restriction and bowing modify the copied action, rather than being separate ongoing effects. (E.g., if the copied ability is itself copied, the copying Personality can only use the ability once a turn and must bow.) [JA, 18 January 2005] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 96
Rules Q&A
- Q: 11) I have Doji Konishiko with the abbility of Shame. I play a Shame from my hand, can I target the personality with Konishiko's abbility, and how many times: once or once per turn?
A: Once per GAME, unless the duration expires first (restored and dishonored again). When Konishiko copies the ability of Shame her new ability reads: "Political Limited: Target a dishonored Personality. That Personality's controller loses 7 Honor. No more copies of Doji Konishiko may target that Personality until he is restored to honor and dishonored again. Bow Doji Konishiko." Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 January 2005", 31 Jan 2005 - Q: Jeff,
When you use Konishiko's Reaction to gain the ability of a Political Action on a card, do the once-per-turn restriction and bowing effect become part of the copied ability itself, or are they separate on-going effects.
A: <SNIP> Martin Lund, "Rules for 18 January 2005", 21 Jan 2005 - Q: When Konishiko gains an action from a Political action card, is the action still Political when cloned by Konishiko?
A: Yes, if Political is part of the Action: "Political Open:" "Political Limited" etc. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 January 2005", 18 Jan 2005 - Q: I'm aiming this mainly at Jeff, but allviews are welcome.
I bring Konishiko into play, I attach Show of Good Faith from hand and give her that ability, next turn I attach Diplomatic Apprentice to her.
When I bow the DA to preform the SoGF ability on Konishiko do I have to pay the 4 gold that I would normally have to play?
A: That's a good question. I'll make Jeff answer it definitively. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 November 2004", 12 Nov 2004 - Q: Temple of Divine Influence Limited: Any number of times per turn, bow this card and bow your performing Personality: Search your Dynasty deck for a different Experience level of that Personality. Regardless of which is the one in play, overlay the more Experienced version onto the lesser one. Permanently copy all abilities of the overlayed card onto the top card.
Doji Konishiko Crane Clan • Courtier • Experienced 7 • Loyal • Unique • Disciple • Kami • Thunder Konishiko may overlay any Crane Clan Courtier you control. Reaction: Once per game, after Konishiko enters play or overlays: Search your hand and discard pile for a Political Strategy. Konishiko permanently copies one of its Limited or Open abilities that does not itself copy abilities, and permanently give the copy the additional effect, "Bow Konishiko". Remove the Strategy from the game.
All of the DotE Thunders are Experienced 7 Personalities who "may overlay" any (or, like with Konishiko, mostly any) member of the appropriate clan. Does this interact constructively with Temple of Divine Influence? Specifically, if I have, in this case, a Crane Clan Courtier in play, can I use Temple of Divine Influence to fetch Konishiko? Conversely, if I have Konishiko in play, can I composite her with a Crane Clan Courtier of my choice?
A: No. Konishiko is still just Konishiko, not a version of all courtiers you control. She merely has a trait that allows her to override the normal rules for overlay. Jon Palmer, "Temple of Divine Influence + DotE Thunders", 19 Mar 2013 - Q: Some months back it was ruled that when Doji Konishiko copied an action on a card with a gold cost in the coin on the card that the copy did not have the cost. The only way this ruling makes sense is that the gold coin value is the gold cost of playing the card not the action. See here: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13173&highlight=konishiko
Therefore since it has been established that an action card can have a gold cost independent of any action on the card it makes sense that actions on the card can have costs independent of any cost of the card. Therfore their costs can be modified independently of the costs of the card due to a particular game state. Therefore Political Outcast adds a cost to open and limited actions on cards independently of the card the action is printed on.
BTW the inability to respond to rulings in the same thread is very annoying. Would it be possible to set PHPBB to allow the thread author to reply in his threads?
A: You are splitting hairs unnecessarily. There is no functional difference between the Gold cost of an action card and any additional (rulesheet) costs in the action itself. They must all be paid to take the given action.
Konishiko doesn't copy the card's Gold cost because it is not written within the text that she copies. This is not a tricky or precedent-setting ruling. Jeff Alexander, "Clarification to game state question", 7 Jun 2005 - Q: Marty, question on your ruling,

(the ability spoken of is Konishiko's coming into play reaction)
However, the egg reads as follows
Egg of P'an Ku wrote:
None of the Personality's costs need to be paid and no entering-play effects are produced.
So why does Konishiko get around Egg of P'an Ku's card text?
A: This is the same exact timing as the question on Shosuro and The Egg of P'an Ku. For further reference, see the thread here. The thread was made before the forum went to direct Q & A, so just skip down to my response. Martin Lund, "Egg of P'an Ku and Doji Konishiko Follow-op", 11 Apr 2005 - Q: Let's say I have Doji Konishiko in play, and she's "learned" the action on Storm Heart. If I Egg her...
A: The Egg copy has the action on Storm Heart.
B: The Egg copy doesn't have the action on Storm Heart, but I can use the reaction to give the Egg copy an ability.
C: The Egg copy has the action on Storm Heart, AND I can use the reaction to give the Egg copy a second ability.
A: C.
Gaining the ability is a permanent change to the card, so Egg copies that change.
However, the Egg itself has not used that ability this game, and thusly has not reached the max # of uses (once per game) yet. Martin Lund, "Doji Konishiko and The Egg of P'an Ku", 11 Apr 2005 - Q: Just a quick and hopefully easy question:
Gold Buys Security
Political Open: Bow one of your Courtiers to target one or more Personalities. Each time any of those Personalities assigns or moves to attack you, his controller loses Honor equal to the Personality's Personal Honor, then the Personality is dishonored. This card's Gold cost equals your starting Family Honor (minimum of 1) times the number of other Personalities targeted.
Doji Konishiko
Crane Clan Thunder. Courtier. Disciple of the Kami. Experienced 7. Unique. Loyal May overlay any Crane Clan Courtier you control. Reaction: After Konishiko enters play or overlays: Once per game, search your hand and discard pile for a Political Action card. Permanently give her one of its Limited or Open actions; she may take the action once per turn and bows as an added effect. Remove the card from the game.
What happens when Konishiko takes the ability from GBS? Can she target everyone an opponent has and in consequence and result in changing her gold cost? Is this change in gold cost (if it exists) permanent? Or is it until end of turn (most likely)?
Thanks.
A: She follows the instructions laid out in the ability on her card text. Zen Faulkes, "Gold Buys Security + Doji Konishiko", 15 Mar 2005 - Q: Can she target everyone an opponent has and in consequence and result in changing her gold cost? Is this change in gold cost (if it exists) permanent?
A: Yes. No. Zen Faulkes, "Gold Buys Security + Doji Konishiko", 15 Mar 2005 - Q: 1. If I bring Doji Konishiko in play and used his reaction, making Gozoku Pawn his permanent ability, does his ability still counts as a political action?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Doji Konishiko and Gozoku Pawn", 7 Mar 2005 - Q: In relation to question 1, can Konetsu copy the ability of Doji Konishiko (after he reacted, of course)?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Doji Konishiko and Gozoku Pawn", 7 Mar 2005 - Q: If I then use Doji Konishiko's ability (Gozoku Pawn text), are the following steps correct?
a. Target an opponent's personality(.)
b. Pay costs which now only involve bowing a courtier/gozoku personality. In this step, I choose to bow Doji Konishiko because he is a courtier. No need to pay 4 gold.
c. Resolve action as normal even though the last phrase of Doji Konishiko's ability wasn't met ("...bows as an added effect.") since he is already bowed for the cost.
A: Correct. Zen Faulkes, "Doji Konishiko and Gozoku Pawn", 7 Mar 2005 - Q: If I discard a Gozoku Pawn to Doji Konishiko when she comes into play, then next turn bow her to use the effect; would I have to bow a second coutier or gozoku to meet the cost of Gozoku Pawn?
A: Konishiko could bow to pay the cost. Zen Faulkes, "Doji Konishiko (Experienced 7) & Gozoku Pawn", 26 Feb 2005
