Rules Q&A
- Q: 1) To use the abbility of The First Dojo, can I bow Yasuki Hachi o Asahina Sezaka, or only Doji Kurohito?
A: "Clan Champion" is a special trait. You can break it up into "Clan" and "Champion," but you can not take the two traits for different parts of the card and mash them together to make a "Clan Champion."
Yasuki Hachi says: "Emerald Champion. Crab Clan. Crane Clan. Samurai. Double Chi. Magistrate. Experienced 2. Unique"
He is a "Crab Clan," "Crane Clan," and "Champion" card, but he is not a "Clan Champion."
Asahina Sekawa says: "Crane Clan Air Shugenja. Jade Champion. Experienced 2. Unique"
He is a "Crane Clan," and "Champion" card, but he is not a "Clan Champion."
Doji Kurohito says: "Crane Clan Champion. Samurai. Courtier. Double Chi. Experienced 2. Unique"
His is a "Clan Champion," card. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 January 2005", 31 Jan 2005 - Q: What happens to the Rings the you put into play from the Voice of the Emperor when Doji Kurohito Dies and the Voice of the Emperor is then removed from the game?
A: The effects of an Action are not automatically ended just because the card that generated them has left play. Voice of the Emperor says, "Political Limited: Once per turn, bow your Stronghold or a Courtier to put an Elemental Ring into play from your hand. While in play, that Ring does not count towards an Enlightenment Victory, and at the beginning of each of your turns, discard a card from your hand or shuffle the Ring back into your Fate deck."
That's all one ability. Its effects persist until the Ring leaves play as per the "while" duration in the second sentence. Whether the Voice stays in play or not is irrelevant once the Action has been played. Every turn you may choose to either discard to keep the card or shuffle it back into your deck. The effect ends once that Ring leaves play, not the Voice. Martin Lund, "Rules for 27 July 2004", 30 Jul 2004 - Q: Is Toru's reaction triggered by: A personality who has a political action printed on the card (ie Bayushi Shintaro or Doji Kurohito xp2)
A: Assuming they actually play that Action? Sure. Qualifies under rule #1. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 May 2004", 24 May 2004 - Q: I have a question about the intent of Jamaira. If my opponent has Doji Kurohito in play, is Jamaira's Honor Requirement -1 and her Gold Cost 4. Should there be a clause referring to "your Personalities" or "sharing a Faction alignment with Jamaira".
A: Not that I can see. I says specifically both "in play" instead of "yours" and "a Faction alignment" instead of "Unicorn Clan" or whatever. Seems very clear. Martin Lund, "Rules for May 4, 2004", 7 May 2004 - Q: Player A is on 12 honour and attempts to buy Doji Kurohito (Exp 2) for full. He bows 13 gold. Player B plays Political Interference on Player A. Player A cannot lose 2 honor otherwise Kurohito cannot enter play. Can Player A now decide not to pay the full 13 gold for Kurohito and buy him without honour instead (i.e. for 11 gold)?
A: The cost isn't paid yet, so he can choose to reduce it or produce more gold for it by whatever means he has available, including the rulebook discount. Martin Lund, "Rules for 25 April 2004", 28 Apr 2004 - Q: Suppose that I'm playing a Crane deck in an Open tournament with the Classic Imperial Favor rules in effect. I currently have no Wind. What happens when I bring Doji Kurohito exp2 into play?
A: The official answer is that there is no official answer. When using optional rules, questions like this can only be answered by the person who implemented them. Choice F) it is.
For what it's worth, previous versions of the rulebook that mentioned the use of the old Favor abilities prohibited Winds. Also, the answer cannot be Jeff Alexander, "rules for 12 March 2004", 13 Mar 2004 - Q: Ok, I feel a little silly for asking this but since i'm a new player it's needed. What happens to the loser of a duel of personal honor that Doji Kurohito creates? Do they become dishonored? I'm just wondering.
A: Wow. So many folks have answered this correctly already, it's almost like I don't even have to be here.
Duels kill the loser unless the duel says otherwise. Kurohito doesn't say otherwise. So... Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 March 2004", 6 Mar 2004 - Q: [Doji Kurohito Experienced 2] issued the duel of honor. [The opposing Personality] struck and played Concede Defeat. What happens[?]
A: Nothing. There are no stated benefits for Kurohito's duel, and all the effects of losing (i.e., death) were negated. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 26 November 2003", 27 Nov 2003 - Q: In this ruling viewtopic.php?f=59&t=82836 you say that the condition ends with an overlay, and I do agree there is a difference between the two types of conditions, Etsui's and Kurohitos. But, the trait states that the winds remain in play while you control Kurohito, when you overlay him he retains his name, and thus you are still meeting the condition., at least in my observation.
A: The name is irrelevant, as the rules on overlaid cards make clear: For purposes of delayed effects on a particular card, and for effects that track whether a card remains in play, the overlaid card is considered to be the same card as the underlying card.
However, continuous effects are different to ongoing effects: While their card is out of play, continuous traits affect the card they are on, and only that card, unless the trait states otherwise. Alex Jones, "Doji Kurohito (exp2) and overlay", 7 Apr 2010 - Q: If Doji Kurohito (exp2) is overlayed (by Doji Kurohito exp3 for example), does his controller remove the Winds he brought into play? Or does the ruling below on Tsuruchi Estui (exp and exp2) also apply to this situation? viewtopic.php?f=59&t=75222
Doji Kurohito Crane Clan Champion. Samurai. Courtier. Double Chi. Experienced 2. Unique. Will only join a Crane Clan player. Bring all Winds you do not have, except the Black Heart of the Empire, into play from outside the game while you control Kurohito. Political Battle: Once per battle, issue an unrefusable challenge to a duel of Personal Honor to an opposing Personality.
A: The Winds are removed from play.
Unlike Etsui exp's trait which creates an ongoing effect, Kurohito exp 2's trait generates a continuous effect which is only applied while it exists. When Kurohito exp 2 is overlaid, the trait is lost, and the continuous effect ends. Alex Jones, "Doji Kurohito (exp2) and overlay", 7 Apr 2010 - Q: Suppose a 5ph personality challenges (or is challenged by) Mirumoto Exp7. The controller of the 5ph personality, say Doji Kurohito Exp2, uses Kakita Technique. Which personality gets to focus first (in both cases)?
[Mod edit: Thread title. -ZF]
A: Mirumoto's trait triggers well after the trigger for Kakita Technique. Mirumoto will always focus first vs Kakita Technique. Chris Fuchs, "Mirumoto Exp7 vs. Kakita Technique", 1 Jul 2007 - Q: This is not a Code of Bushido question, so when I mention "bringing a Wind into play", you have to assume I'm bringing, say, Doji Kurohito into play - maybe multiple times, 'cause I'm also using Shrine to Tsukune. In the future, when CoB releases, there might be easier ways to do it, but I'd like an answer quickly...
Say I have the Underhand in play, and, because I got careless, one of its abilities got removed by Same Old Tricks. Then my Underhand is removed from the game, and I bring one into play - from outside the game, I suppose.
Does it get its abilities back? (I assume it does)
Now, more tricky, and potentially more abusable.
Does it "remember" which Political action cards I've already fetched with it?
A: Nothing says you have to bring the same copy of the Wind Card into play each time. I'm thinking about Doji Tanitsu Experienced and Suitengu's Surge in Diamond Edition in particular. Each time Tanitsu enters play while you do not control a copy of Underhand of the Emperor, you can bring any copy of Underhand of the Emperor you own into play from outside of the game.
You could grab one you've already used, or one that you've never used before. The one's you've never used before aren't impacted by other copies of the card any more than your third copy of Doji Domotai is impacted by something that dealt with your first copy of her.
It seems very strange because Winds are normally a one-per-player sort of card, but all the standard principles apply until Jeff decides otherwise. Martin Lund, "Bringing Winds into play", 19 Aug 2005 - Q: The cards in question are Steel on Steel (RoB wording) and Doji Kurohito xp2. So it seems Keen Eye does work since the "targeting" is part of the challenge?
A: Yep to both. If they had said something like, "Target another player's Personality. Your Personality challenges him... etc" the targeting would've been outside the scope of the challenge, but those two don't. Also, sidenote, you meant "Twist" not "Turn" of Fate, above. 🙂 Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 14 Oct 2024
