Rules Q&A
- Q: Stronger than Steel previews and rulesheet have shown Doji Masako as a courtier who could allow its controler to use twice in a turn, any of the two "default player abilites that involve discarding the Imperial Favor". Indeed part of Doji Masako's text reads: "if the discarding paid a cost from one of your abilities not on a card, you can use that ability an additional time this turn" (emphasis mine).
In this context, Glossary "From" explains that a cost is 'from an ability not on a card' if this ability is printed in the rulebook. The two default player abilites I am talking about are actually printed in the rulebook, that is fine.
However, I've also read the "Your" entry in the Glossary but I've found nothing that could suggest these default abilites might be "one of your abilities" from Doji Masako's point of view or his controler's. To be precise, according to me the only sentence from the "Your" entry in the Glossary that may be useful here reads: "When “your” and similar words refer to an effect, action, or targeting, they refer to effects, actions and targeting from that player’s cards" (emphasis added). Unless I make a mistake, it means such abilities must always come from a card whereas Doji Masako only looks for abilities that don't come from a card. That seems to make no sense !
Let me ask it directly: if I control one unbowed Doji Masako, one unbowed Doji Ayano with 4 Personal Honor and the Imperial Favor during my Action Phase, and if I use the ability that makes me discard the Favor along with one card in order to draw another card, and if I use Doji Masako's reaction at the time when I discard the Imperial Favor with the purpose of gaining control of it again, can I also use this same drawing ability an additional time this turn thanks to Masako's reaction's effects ? If yes, according to the rules and apart from designer's intent, why is this player ability considered to be "from one of [Doji Masako's controler's] abilities" please ?
Thanks once more for your wonderful help.
A: That's a CR problem, the "Your" entry is now expanded to make sense. Roger Giner-Sorolla, "Doji Masako: half useful, half useless ?", 11 Oct 2007
