Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm either dumb or confused. can someone explain to me how this works?
How can a personality seppuku to reduce honor loss from a Kolat Assassin?
A: Because seppuku is done as soon as the Personality gets targeted by Kolat Assassin, not when the honor loss actually occurs. [DE p. 88] This is before any effects of Kolat Assassin have occured, so the Personality is still alive.
The first Nagori commits seppuku, then Kolat Assassin tries to kill him and fails, then Kolat Assassin causes a 4 point loss which gets changed to 1, to which the other Nagori reacts with Rhetoric. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 Feb. 2004", 26 Feb 2004 - Q: That having been said, if I have a Dishonored Samurai in a battle, and someone wants to shoot him with a Ranged Attack, can I seppuku? It's an action that's going to cause me an honor loss... right?
A: No. Kolat Assassin causes an honor loss. Making a ranged attack does not cause an honor loss. It kills something (maybe). Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 Feb. 2004", 26 Feb 2004 - Q: Why would one of your personalities be allowed to commit seppuku from being targeted by YOUR Kolat assassin
A: Because that's what the rules say. It's also nothing new. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 Feb. 2004", 26 Feb 2004 - Q: 3- There's a suspicions in play i have a Doji Nagori and i'm playing against a Shadowlands Player, can i bow Nagori to increase his honor loss even if he cannot lose honor?
A: No. There is no Honor loss for you to increase. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 May 2003", 15 May 2003 - Q: I don't see anywhere that the Doji Nagori from L5R experience that has 4 chi, is not considered an MRP.
A: It's in there. Specifically, here: http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/rulings/#Version Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 20 April 2003, Part 2", 20 Apr 2003 - Q: Player A have Doji Nagori in play and Player B resolves an Imperial Funeral. Can player A lose some honor, use Nagori and don't lose any honor for Nagori because he is bowed?
A: No. Player A cannot use Nagori on his own losses. He can only use Nagori on player B's losses. [Nagori card text] Jeff Alexander, "post for 27 March 2003", 28 Mar 2003 - Q: 3) A friend tried a combo on me a while ago where he bowed a Diplomatic Apprentice that was attached to Doji Nagori to increase an honor loss I was taking from Suspicions, then bowed that same Nagori to increase the same loss again. I went with it, but it seems to me that Nagori's ability had already been used, the cost was just changed. I don't think it should have worked. Am I wrong?
A: You are not wrong. Also from the FAQ:
] Q: If I put a Diplomatic Apprentice on Shosuro Yasuko, can I bow the ] Apprentice and her together to stop two units from attacking? ] ] A: No. The rulebook says each printed instance of a Reaction can ] only be used once per trigger, and Yasuko's trigger is the ] declaration of an attack. That means each time someone announces an ] attack, each Yasuko's ability can be used once and once only. The ] Diplomatic Apprentice doesn't change that; even if you bow the ] Apprentice instead of Yasuko, it's still Yasuko's ability being ] used. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 February 2003", 26 Feb 2003 - Q: From the FAQ: Q: So that means I won’t gain extra honor for buying a Personality at full price while I have the Experienced 2 Bayushi Yojiro or the Experienced Ki-Rin’s Shrine? But everyone I know says I do! A: For a while, the rule was that you did, but in Broken Blades the ruleschanged slightly. Now, when you bring a Personality into play for full price during your Dynasty Phase, you gain Honor based on her Personal Honor just before she enters play, so effects that boost her Personal Honor her while she’s in play don’t have a chance to raise it first. Note that Personalities that enter play dishonored will still give you a 0-point Honor gain if brought into play at full price, which will not restore them to Honorable status.
Question: If I play ‘Company you Keep’ on a dishonored personality and the opposing player pays full price on a a greater than 0 PH personality entering play, and since the new personality is entering with a 0 point honor gain, can I use Doji Nagori to increase the honor gain from 0 to 1.
A: Yes. Paying full price for an aligned Personality with 0 Personal Honor generates a 0-point honor gain, which can be modified by cards such as Nagori. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2002", 19 Nov 2002 - Q: Is the 4 chi Doji Nagori in the L5R experience decks an MRP[?]
A: No. See Archive, General rules, Versions. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 July 2002", 14 Jul 2002 - Q: The second is the one Doji Nagori in the Crane deck who apparently has a huge misprint as he has 4C instead of 1C, which I would love to see become a real change but I cannot imagine it being so. So what do we do with him - play him as written for the L5RExp games and ignore him at all other times or play him as having on 1C?
A: Learn-to-play sets don't count for the MRP rule. Play him as written when teaching the game with the L5R Experience decks. He's still 1C in real games. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 July 2002", 3 Jul 2002 - Q: My opponent has Doji Nagori and Suspicions in play. Can I play Defend Your Honor when Nagori bows and causes me an additional one-point Honor loss?
A: Nagori does not cause you a loss himself. He increases the loss that Suspicions causes you. You cannot play Defend Your Honor against his action. (You can't play it against Suspicions either, since that's not an action.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 March 2002", 19 Mar 2002 - Q: Are the following two scenarios legal plays?
1) Suspicions is in play. Three Doji Nagori are in play. Nagori has a Political Reaction which reads: "When another player gains or loses Honor, bow Nagori to increase the gain or loss by 1. Gain 1 Honor." Question: Can all three Nagoris react to the Suspicions event with the cumulative effect that the opponent loses 4 Honor and I gain a net of 2 Honor (after losing 1 for the event and gaining 1 for each of the three Nagoris)?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 February 2002", 5 Feb 2002 - Q: If Nagori has the Diplomatic Apprentice attached to him, can he and the Apprentice bow to cause a 3 point honor loss from Suspicions? (1 from Suspicions, 1 from Nagori, 1 from the Apprentice)
A: Each printed Reaction is usable once per trigger. [AOF rulebook p. 48]. A Diplomatic Apprentice does not allow the same Political Reaction to be used multiple times against one singular circumstance. You have to use the Diplomat alone on the first trigger, then use the Personality (or another Diplomat) on another one later. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 January 2002", 29 Jan 2002
