- Erratum: Should read, "If Reju is tied in a duel, he wins the duel instead of losing." [JA, 23 September 2000] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 97
- If two Reju face each other in a duel and tie, they both win. [Card text, DW, 15 May 1997] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 97
- If they tie in the duel started by Fight for My Favor, the Favor stays where it is. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 97
Rules Q&A
- Q: Who is right, and if the attacker is right, what action would still be legal against Matsuo both before and after he moves?
There aren't many. One example: the second action on Stifling Wind, provided the caster is in the current battle.
Now this reminded me of a game i've had a few days ago. The situation was quite similar. I was attacking two provinces, and at the left i've had One Personality, while my opponent had Doji Reju exp2 with no cards atached (i.e. no followers). At the right battle i've had several units, including Iuchi Hari with Stifling Wind. Now i've chosen the battle at the right province to be the first, and then tried to cast Stifling Wind to bow Doji Reju in the other province. My opponent, and a few other people started to argue that i couldn't do that, because the battle Doji Reju was in, hadn't started yet. Who was right?
A: You satisfy Relevance if the action comes from, targets, or affects the battle itself or something that's in it now or is going to be. So, an action like the second one on Stifling Wind, that does not require the target to be in the same battle as the card that the action is on, CAN be used on a card in another battle IF the card with the action is in the current one. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 June 2003", 4 Jun 2003 - Q: I'd also appreciate if someone would mail me messages concerning Rend the Soul + Doji Reju. There are some oddities in that ruling too (though it makes much more sense).
A: The ruling in the archive is not up to date on this issue. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 May 2003", 29 May 2003 - Q: He attempted to overlay Doji reju exp2 Hitomi Reju, over his non exp Doji Reju Paying all cost and such. The Doji Reju exp 2 is a more exp verson of "Hitomi Reju". So, is this a legal move?
A: Yes. Hitomi Reju has the "Experienced Doji Reju" trait. It can be confusing when a character changes names in the story, because sometimes the "Experienced" trait uses the previous name rather than consistently using the name on the non-Experienced Personality. If you can trace back to the non-Experienced Personality, different names in the "Experienced" trait don't matter for overlaying purposes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 April 2003", 11 Apr 2003 - Q: I know this is going to come up sooner or later so I may as well ask it now. If Doji Reju (any version) wins a duel in which he focused Rend the Soul, does he win or is it a tie?
A: This sounds like the Hida O-Ushi Exp2/Heavy Shadow of Fear ruling. Both their traits trigger once, then stop.
If Reju is ahead in Chi (or whatever stat is used in the duel), Rend the Soul makes it a tie, then Reju turns it back into a win.
If, however, it's truly a tie, then Reju turns it into a win, then Rend the Soul turns it back into a tie. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 March 2003", 31 Mar 2003 - Q: 2. I was under the impression that if a personality had an experienced version in gold legal, that a less experienced version could also be used in gold legal format. (example: Doji Reju Exp. 2 and Doji Reju non-experienced version) Is the non-experienced version of Doji Reju legal in gold environment?
A: No. That was how Strict and Extended Jade worked. The Gold format has no such rule. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 February 2003", 27 Feb 2003 - Q: A crane player is facing another crane player. Crane player A has a Doji Reju with a Doji house guard and a Uji no Shiryo attached. Uji no Shiryo battle: If there are one or more units in the opposing player's army, bow Uji to give this personality -1f/-1c and move this unit into the current battle.
Crane player B has a Doji Kurohito
now here is the question. Player A declares an attack and declares no infantry. Player B places his Kurohito in his 2nd province( both players have 4 provinces)
Now player A resolves the battle in province 3 first. Can he bow Uji and move Reju into a province where there is no defending army?
I am pretty sure I know the answer is no, but I just wanted to double check.
A: At Province 3, there are no units in the opposing player's army. Uji can't be used. [card text] Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 February 2003", 21 Feb 2003 - Q: Hi, I was wondering what would happen if a Crane player had Ki-Rin's Shrine (exp) out and brought Doji Reju (exp2) into play for full?
A. the player gains 2 honor. B. the player gains 3 honor. C. this question has been answered and I somehow missed it when I looked.
A: Reju Exp. is a Dragon Clan Personality. He'd get the Personal Honor bonus, and being 3PH upon entering play, the Crane player would gain 3 Honor. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 June 2002", 7 Jun 2002 - Q: 8. I have Doji Reju (who wins a duel in the event of a tie) and he's using the Coward's Way (lets me bring in another personality to add the chi) Coward's Way says that if I lose or tie, the second personality suffers the safe effects as the original personality. So if the result of the duel is a tie, does that mean Reju will 'win', my other personality lose and my opponent lose, giving me possibly two different effects as a result of the duel at the same time?
A: If you tie, things that normally happen to the winning Personality affect Reju, so they'd apply to the other Personality as well. Note that things that happen to YOU, the winning player (like gaining 5 Honor) don't happen twice. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 2", 8 Apr 2002 - Q: Greetings.
I have a question regarding a few specific instances of the event The Agasha Join the Phoenix. Perhaps a blanket definition can be made.
The card reads, "Choose one family name from another Clan. For the rest of the game ...)."
Situation One: A Dragon player names Doji. Doji Reju exp2 has the Dragon Clan trait. Is this a legal choice?
A: Whether "Doji" is legal depends only on whether there are any "Doji" family Personalities with Clan alignments *other than* "Dragon Clan", which there are. The presence of one (or even a thousand) "Doji" family Personality with "Dragon Clan" makes not one speck of difference. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 19 February 2001", 24 Feb 2001 - Q: Say I challenge a 3 chi personality with Doji Reju. My opponent focuses Kharmic Strike, and I proceed to strike.
According to the rules for resolving a duel in the comprehensive rules, focus effects resolve in step 4. So it is at that point that Kharmic Strike resolves, setting up the delayed effect of both personalities losing the duel when it resolves. However, in step 5, the scores are added up, and are tied, so Reju's trait triggers then, saying that he wins the duel. Which take precedence? I can see a few potential outcomes:
1.) Active player decides whether to apply Kharmic Strike's effect before Reju's, and so he will either win or lose the duel based upon that order. 2.) It doesn't matter the order they are applied, as they are not contradictory effects, the other personality will lose and Reju will both win AND lose the duel. 3.) Reju's trait doesn't matter as Kharmic Strike says the duel is not a tie (doubtful, as that is reminder text and seems to refer to the outcome NOT to the adding of scores which Reju is concerned with).
Thanks
A: Outcome 3 is the correct answer.
Focus Effects are applied before Duel Resolution, so when the duel goes to resolution, Kharmic Strike's effect has modified any result to a double loss, which is as the reminder text states, not a tie. Ben Higgins, "Doji Reju vs. MRPed Kharmic Strike", 17 Apr 2014 - Q: So, if, such as in this example, my opponent has Doji Reju Exp2, which is unique, I can bring in the basic version of Doji Reju currently in my province. But if I had a Reju Exp2, I would not be able to bring it in? just makign sure I'm reading this right
A: Right. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 23 Jan 2024 - Q: Ah ok, so they made it to ONLY wins ties or both? That's weird too because doji reju is one of my old school favorites and the reprints didn't appear to make him a duelist
A: It started as "focus first" then changed to "wins ties". Was never both. Also, Reju was never reprinted after it became "wins ties". Also-also, Reju is slightly better because he wins ALL ties, but Duelists only win ties against non-Duelists. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 12 Mar 2021
