- Erratum: Should read, "If Reju is tied in a duel, he wins the duel instead of losing." [JA, 23 September 2000] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 97
- If two Reju face each other in a duel and tie, they both win. [Card text, DW, 15 May 1997] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 97
- If they tie in the duel started by Fight for My Favor, the Favor stays where it is. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 97
Rules Q&A
- Q: A crane player is facing another crane player. Crane player A has a Doji Reju with a Doji house guard and a Uji no Shiryo attached. Uji no Shiryo battle: If there are one or more units in the opposing player's army, bow Uji to give this personality -1f/-1c and move this unit into the current battle.
Crane player B has a Doji Kurohito
now here is the question. Player A declares an attack and declares no infantry. Player B places his Kurohito in his 2nd province( both players have 4 provinces)
Now player A resolves the battle in province 3 first. Can he bow Uji and move Reju into a province where there is no defending army?
I am pretty sure I know the answer is no, but I just wanted to double check.
A: At Province 3, there are no units in the opposing player's army. Uji can't be used. [card text] Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 February 2003", 21 Feb 2003 - Q: Say I challenge a 3 chi personality with Doji Reju. My opponent focuses Kharmic Strike, and I proceed to strike.
According to the rules for resolving a duel in the comprehensive rules, focus effects resolve in step 4. So it is at that point that Kharmic Strike resolves, setting up the delayed effect of both personalities losing the duel when it resolves. However, in step 5, the scores are added up, and are tied, so Reju's trait triggers then, saying that he wins the duel. Which take precedence? I can see a few potential outcomes:
1.) Active player decides whether to apply Kharmic Strike's effect before Reju's, and so he will either win or lose the duel based upon that order. 2.) It doesn't matter the order they are applied, as they are not contradictory effects, the other personality will lose and Reju will both win AND lose the duel. 3.) Reju's trait doesn't matter as Kharmic Strike says the duel is not a tie (doubtful, as that is reminder text and seems to refer to the outcome NOT to the adding of scores which Reju is concerned with).
Thanks
A: Outcome 3 is the correct answer.
Focus Effects are applied before Duel Resolution, so when the duel goes to resolution, Kharmic Strike's effect has modified any result to a double loss, which is as the reminder text states, not a tie. Ben Higgins, "Doji Reju vs. MRPed Kharmic Strike", 17 Apr 2014 - Q: The rulebook says: In a standard duel, the loser dies.( DE p89). If a card gives an alternate outcome e.g "Dishonor the loser" then that effect changes the outcome for both parties to the duel. But what about "Enough Talk!" Can your oponent's personality die to "Enough Talk"?
If not, if a card intended to do something in addition to destroying the loser it would have to say "If X wins, destroy the loser, do something else". But X would still be destroyed for losing. Is this correct?
And finally, if that's true, it seems to me that Concede Defeat would not save the opponent in this duel, but would save X.
And it seems to me that the answers to these questions should shed some light on Doji Reju.
Thanks

A: "Destroy the loser" (card text). Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Not About EomE REJU xp3 but maybe relevent to it", 15 Mar 2005
