Rulings
- If you have an action printed on a card in the unit, it must be used. [ZF, 14 June 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 133
Rules Q&A
- Q: So, it's been pointed out on Shiro Big Deck that as currently worded, Doomed Intentions' movement action may not be usable:
Doomed Intentions: Battle: If there are any enemy units at the current battlefield, target your unit: Move it there. If it moved, straighten it. If you are the Defender, take an additional Battle action to use a base ability on a card in the unit.
Comprehensive Rules: p38: To be legally targeted by an action during battle, any cards in a unit must be at the current battlefield.
This would be problematic for a huge number of cards in legacy formats. Can we get a clarification before the Gencon Tournament?
A: Due to the huge nature of getting every card in the Oracle updated with Ivory templated text, that project will not be completed in time.
How Gen Con's Big Deck event will work is, cards will be played as they worked under the rules set they were most recently printed in. If you and your opponent cannot agree with how a card works, you will call a judge. Both Brook and myself will be your judges for Gen Con, and we will explain to you and your opponent how the card works. Obviously this will be assessed on a card for card basis.
For the specific case of Doomed Intentions, the Battle ability on the card would be played as if it had Absent. Ben Higgins, "Doomed Intentions (Legacy/BigDeck)", 5 Aug 2014 - Q: I attack. My opponent uses Doomed Intentions to move-in a defender. I react to the movement with Slaughter the Scout.
Question is, at what point is the StS Reaction played?
After movement, before straightening? Or after movement and straightening, before the additional action?
A: After the movement is the trigger on Slaughter the Scout. It would be before the Personality straightens. Jon Palmer, "Doomed Intentions vs. Slaughter the Scout", 13 Jun 2014 - Q: Hello,
1. I play Doomed Intentions targetting my Daigotsu Shiraki. 2. Shiraki moves. 3. Now I must take an action printed on Shiraki.
If I have a Dark Virtue in my hand, must I show it, and perform a ranged attack? If I do not have a Dark Virtue in my hand, must I prove this somehow to my opponent? If so, how?
thanks, Andrew
A: If are able to use the Battle action on Shiraki, you must.
If you have no Dark Virtues and you say you do not, your opponent may ask a judge to confirm this.
If you have no Dark Virtues in your hand, Shiraki's Battle Action may not be taken (inability to pay costs). Dan Jacobson, "Doomed Intentions and Daigotsu Shiraki", 1 Apr 2009 - Q: If I attempt to doomed intentions a unit with imperial elite guard(only card with an action on it in the unit) and its movement is negated with hamstrung or bayushi tsimaru exp since the action on imperial elite guard doesn't say opposed can i still blow up a card at the current battle field or will the action go off and do nothing.
A: The additional action granted by Doomed Intentions is still subject to the Rules of Location and Presence. If the unit you tried to move fails to move to the battlefield you will usually fail to satisfy Location, because Doomed Intentions says the ability you use must be on a card in the unit and the Rule of Location says the unit must be at the current battlefield. Alex Jones, "Doomed Intentions", 31 Mar 2009 - Q: Is Unexpected Arrival considered to create presence in a battlefield the same way cards like Doomed Intentions, Unwavering Assault, etc. do*? Can I play it in a battlefield with enemy units where I don't have presence and thus create presence there?
A: Unexpected Arrival is similar to Will in the sense that you must have presence to play these actions.
Creating presence does not fulfill the requirements of the exception to the Rules of Presence and Location. Dan Jacobson, "Unexpected Arrival question", 30 Mar 2009 - Q: Is I Am Ready considered printed on a card in the unit?
A: No. "Printed" (http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_P-Q#Printed) is the same as "base" http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_B#Base), which means Doomed Intentions is out. Zen Faulkes, "I Am Ready + Doomed Intentions", 23 Mar 2009 - Q: Situation: As a naval action, I play Knowledge targeting my samurai and an opposing courtier. My opponent reacts with Share the Blame after the targets are chosen, dishonoring the courtier I targeted with Knowledge. I then react with Doomed Intentions, destroying his courtier. I believe the Knowledge sends my personality home with me drawing 0 cards. Is that correct?
A: Looks correct to me.
By the time the card draw effect of Knowledge would occur, the personality to check for personal honor is dishonored via the enemy leader's Share the Blame. That courtier's personal honor is 0. You draw no cards, and your Samurai is sent home.
EDITED: While the answer I gave is correct, my reasoning was off. My apologies. Dan Jacobson, "Knowledge, Share the Blame, and Doomed Intentions", 7 Nov 2008 - Q: Since he is not present to use the action, does he have to pass?
A: Yes. http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_A#Additional: 'A granted action opportunity can be used to pass." Zen Faulkes, "Doomed Intentions", 27 Jul 2008 - Q: Can I play Unshakable on a Tactician who is at home to play for example Doomed Intentions from my discard pile to move the unit into the combat?
thx
A: Unshakable is not performed by any Personality. You need to control an unbowed Tactician Personality at the current battlefield, but it is not performed by any Personality (and so it does not count as any Personality's "one Tactical Action per turn" limit). Moving a Personality to the battlefield with the additional action does not satisfy this requirement.
See Tactical. Alex Jones, "unshakable and movement", 21 Jun 2008 - Q: Can I (use Determination with) Doomed Intentions to bring a unit into the Ambush battle(?)
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Determination and Ambush", 12 Feb 2008 - Q: Yoshino is defending at a province with another personality... say Yufu. I use Yoshino's ability killing an opponent's personality, and then destroying one of his attachments on another personality. He uses Refugees or some other way to send Yoshino home... I allow that to happen. I then drop Doomed Intentions and move Yoshino back in and straighten him... as the latter portion of DI states, can I then use his ability a second time killing another personality without an attachment and blow up another attachment?
A: No, you cannot use Doomed Intentions to use an ability more than the normal number of times. Zen Faulkes, "Does Doomed Intentions get around 1x/turn use of abilities?", 20 Jan 2008 - Q: Is akodo shigetoshis action considered printed on him for using doomed intentions.
A: No. It's a trait. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Shigetoshi and Doomed Intentions", 16 Jan 2008 - Q: Reaction: After another player's action resolves that dishonored any of his own Personalities: Destroy one of those target Personalities.

To help clarify what the original querant was asking:
Situation #1: Player A controls Bayushi Saya and uses her Political Open ability to target a Hida Daiyu (for example) controlled by Player B. Player B uses Hida Daiyu's ability to create a follower token, and thus dishonors Hida Daiyu.
Can Player A react with Doomed Intentions to destroy Hida Daiyu, or was the source of the dishonoring Bayushi Saya's action and not Hida Daiyu's?
A: Saya's ability is the one that produced the Dishonor effect. You can't play Doomed Intentions. Martin Lund, "Clarification: Bayushi Saya and Doomed Intentions", 13 Dec 2007 - Q: Situation #2: Player A controls Bayushi Saya and uses her Political Open ability to target an Akodo Shunori (for example) controlled by Player B during Player B's turn. Player B assigns Akodo Shunori to attack and thus dishonors Akodo Shunori.
Can Player A react with Doomed Intentions to destroy Akodo Shunori, or was the source of the dishonoring Bayushi Saya's action and not Player B assigning Akodo Shunori?
A: Assigning a Unit to Attack isn't even an Action (it has no Battle, Open, Limited, or Reaction designator). You certainly can't play Doomed Intentions. Martin Lund, "Clarification: Bayushi Saya and Doomed Intentions", 13 Dec 2007 - Q: Basically, I believe the issue is that someone somewhere is having a lot of trouble trying to figure out where the source of effects comes from.
A: The Effect is listing in the Effects Block of the Ability. The card with that Ability is the source of the Effect.
Moreover, re-read Doomed Intentions. It only cares about the effects of Actions. If the effect came from a non-Action source you couldn't play Doomed Intentions anyway. My personalities can never be hit with Doomed Intentions in response to one of my Opponents playing an Action.
I know the card is expensive on Ebay and all, but it isn't made out of Gundanium or Pixie Dust. Martin Lund, "Clarification: Bayushi Saya and Doomed Intentions", 13 Dec 2007 - Q: I'm The attacker my opponent uses Doomed Intentions, I react w/ Cut them Off.... what will happen?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_A#Additional: "Whenever an effect grants an additional action while another action of the same designator is in progress, the timing of the additional action is delayed until after the current action resolves."
http://rules.l5r.com/Timing: Delayed effects precede reactions.
So the sequence is:
1. Resolve both immediate effects of Doomed Intentions.
2. Additional Battle action from Doomed Intentions.
3. React with Cut Them Off.
(Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Cut them Off against Doomed Intentions", 8 Dec 2007 - Q: If during a game my oponent ataches a Corrupt Adjunct to one of his personalities can I use Doomed Intentions react to kill the personality?
A: Dishonoring is not an effect of an action, it's an effect of a trait. No. Zen Faulkes, "Domeed Intentions and Corrupt Adjunct", 22 Nov 2007 - Q: Whenever an effect grants an additional action while another action of the same designator is in progress, the timing of the additional action is delayed until after the current action resolves. This makes sure that Battle actions can not occur within other Battle actions, and so on. ["After" ADDED August 14 2007]
A: So Pincers and Tail and the additional Action from Doomed Intentions both share the same trigger.
According to the Comprehensive Rules on Timing, the Delayed Effects always come before the Triggered Traits, which always come before Reactions.
So the Additional Action from Doomed Intentions happens first.
This might prevent you from ever attaching Pincers and Tail, and consequently stop you from benefiting from Eastern Hub Port too. Martin Lund, "Doomed Intentions and/or Eastern Hub Port Pincers and Tail", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: Doomed Intentions
Battle: If there are enemy units at the current battlefield: Move one of your target units there. If it moved, straighten it. If you are the Defender, take an additional Battle action printed on a card in the unit.
Noting how the card does not say "...any enemy units..." but just "...enemy units..." (plural), can I play the battle action if the opposing player has only ONE unit in the current battlefield?
A: You can play it even if there's only 1 unit.
Any number 0 is considered to test true for "are there enemy units?" Martin Lund, "Doomed Intentions", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: Doomed Intentions: do I HAVE to take an additional action?
A: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=58235
That was before Samurai Edition rules were out, but I think I'll stick with the original ruling for stability's sake. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Doomed Intentions "take an additional"", 13 Oct 2007 - Q: Means the same as “base,” even on cards that do not literally have their base stats printed.
A: Granted abilities, such as the Ruined City ability, are not 'printed' on each of your personalities. Chris Fuchs, "Ruined City + Doomed Intentions", 29 Sep 2007 - Q: I target one of his personalities with my Bayushi Saya. My opponent uses an ability on the targeted personality, thus dishonoring him. I react with Doomed Intentions, killing his personality. Legal?
A: No. Nowhere in the effects of the ability he used does it say to Dishonor the Personality. Saya doesn't modify any other card's abilities. The effect is that of her own Action and will not successfully provide a trigger for Doomed Intentions. When Saya's action resolves, it hasn't dishonored anything yet - only set in motion an effect that could later dishonor someone. When someone else's action resolves that triggers Saya's lingering effect, it still isn't that other action's effect that does the Dishonoring. Martin Lund, "Bayushi Saya and Doomed Intentions", 12 Sep 2007 - Q: I have Bayushi Muhito with any attachment with a printed battle action (let´s suppose the clan armor). If I move it with Doomed Intentions to a defending army, how I resolve that?
a) Move Muhito, play Battle printed in the unit (Doomed) and then any battle (Muhito´s reaction) b) Move Muhito, play any battle (Muhito´s reaction) and then Battle printed in the unit (Doomed) c) I can only take one aditional action (the one I choose). Thanks.
Bayushi Muhito Reaction: After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield: Take an additional Battle action.
Doomed Intentions Battle: If there are enemy units at the current battlefield: Move one of your target units there. If it moved, straighten it. If you are the Defender, take an additional Battle action printed on a card in the unit. (Sorry, I don´t know why I can´t quote the relevant text... )
A: Doomed Intention's extra action first, then Muhito's reaction action.
Essentially, the extra action from Doomed Intentions gets 'queued up' before you have the opportunity to react with Muhito, which then adds an additional action opportunity to the end of the 'queue'. Chris Fuchs, "Bayushi Muhito and Doomed Intentions.", 9 Aug 2007 - Q: I just wanted to ask for future reference, then. Will this ruling on timing of cards that create the opportunity to play additional actions continue into Samurai Edition, or is it a Lotus ruling, and a new and different one will be made for Samurai Edition? Just making sure I'll have a full understanding of the rules right from the start.
A: Unknown at this time. Working on it. Zen Faulkes, "Doomed Intentions (new) 2", 26 Jun 2007 - Q: (D)oes Doomed Intentions resolve before the additional action starts?
A: Rules Archive, Timing: "For actions that cause you to take another action, the latter action is separate and occurs after the first action is resolved." Zen Faulkes, "Doomed Intentions (new, possibly)", 26 Jun 2007 - Q: When using (Doomed Intentions) as a defender to move a unit into the battle, is taking an additional Battle action printed on a card in the unit optional?
A: No. If there are printed Battle actions, you must use one.
To stave off confusion from others: You can still use the effect when there are no Battle actions printed on cards in the unit, because using the action is an effect, not a cost. The effect will be negated.
But if you can, you must. Zen Faulkes, "Doomed Intentions", 14 Jun 2007 - Q: (W)hen a Lion player ataches the Broken Sword of the Lion to a personality and dishonor him can I react with Doomed Intentions to kill the personality he atached the sword since it was result from his Limited action?
A: No. Dishonor is the result of a trait, not an action. Zen Faulkes, "Broken Sword of the Lion + Doomed Intentions", 27 May 2007
