Rules Q&A
- Q: Say I attach a Dotanuki to Mirumoto, and he challenges an opponent with less Force than him. What happens:
a) Mirumoto's trait sets his Chi to the opponent's Chi, then Dotanuki gives him +2C on top.
b) Mirumoto gets the +2C from Dotanuki, but that means nothing since Mirumoto's trait sets his Chi equal to the opponent.
A: It would be "B." Dotanuki kicks in when you enter the duel opposing someone with less Force. Mirumoto sets his Chi before the first opportunity to Focus or Strike, which is distinctly a later trigger than entering the duel. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 November 2004", 24 Nov 2004 - Q: Does "When Mae enters a duel" occur before "Dotanuki gains +2C while this Personality opposes a Personality with less Force in a duel."?
A: No. Traits take effect before Reactions (http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/#Timing). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 November 2003", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: Higatsuku wielding Dotanuki forces a challenge. Can I play Shosuro Tech 1st, and then gain the +2 chi from the Dotanuki?
A: Well, you can't play Shosuro Technique on Higatsuku, because he's bowed from his action. But assuming you could (like, if you were using a different set of rules...), it would work. Shosuro Technique's trigger happens before you become an opposing personality in a duel. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 13th, 2003", 13 Aug 2003 - Q: Will a personality targeted by Geisha Assassin get the 2 Chi bonus from the Dotanuki he is wearing?
A: Absolutely. That is, as long as their Force is greater than zero (not a guaranteed thing). Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: Can I use Dotanuki to fulfill the requirements for playing Ring of Fire?
A: I wonder if @kempy_nezumi could dredge up a contemporary ruling? I admit it's not terribly clear, and I'd love it if the legwork had already been done 8-9 years ago. 🙂 Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 22 Nov 2023
