Rules Q&A
- Q: There is a question about this card Duty to the Clan
Reaction: Play this card after a battle Resolution Segment in which one of your Personalities of your Faction was destroyed. Permanently lower the Gold cost of one of your Faction's Personalities that is face up in one of your Provinces to 0.
Does this card work for cards destroyed during the battle or for cards destroyed during battle resolution?
A: You play it "after a battle Resolution Segment in which one of your Personalities of your Faction was destroyed." [card text] The Personality has to have died in that Resolution Segment. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 January 2003", 17 Jan 2003 - Q: So could my opponent play Duty to the Clan after a battle, in which he To do what we musted one of his cards to destroy one of mine?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 January 2003", 17 Jan 2003 - Q: So could my opponent play Duty to the Clan after a battle, in which I used a ranged attacked to destroy one of his personalies?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 January 2003", 17 Jan 2003 - Q: And you can't use your card effects that trigger for destroyed personalities (Duty to the Clan, Be Prepared To Dig Two Graves, etc.). In Open, Kakita Shijin cannot write poems about dead people if they were bowed when they died.
A: He always could and still can, regardless of whether this ruling was kept. Shijin reacts after the Personality dies. [card text] Dead cards are not considered bowed. [DA rulebook p. 61] Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 1", 5 Apr 2002 - Q: A Legacy question.......one that has bugged me for years and I've never bothered to have answered.
How does/did Duty to the Clan work? Is its Reaction triggered only if the Personality dies at resolution or after resolution if he died at any time during the battle? I'm sure in the brave new world of Samurai templating this would never have happened but the archaic wording is ambiguous.
Thanks,
Brent.
Duty to the Clan Reaction: Play after the resolution phase of a battle in which one of your Personalities that is aligned to your clan was destroyed. Choose one of your clan's Personalities that is currently face up in one of your Provinces. This Personality has its gold cost permanently reduced to zero.
A: Actually, it's the brave old world of Gold Edition templating that got it right.
I direct you to the GE MRP text:
"Reaction: Play this card after a battle Resolution Segment in which one of your Personalities of your Faction was destroyed. Permanently lower the Gold cost of one of your Faction's Personalities that is face up in one of your Provinces to 0."
So, Duty to the Clan can only trigger if you had a Personality destroyed during resolution. Brook Cunningham, "Duty to the Clan", 12 Apr 2008
