Assign them to one or more battlefields where there is an enemy army. They cannot straighten during your next Straighten Phase." Rules Q&A
- Q: With regards to: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=75121
While assignment happens during the attack phase, surely the wording on Misdirection, "during a battle", requires a battle to be taking place or in resolution, whereas at the point of Eager to Fight, no battle has been engaged yet.
A: Ah, right. That's correct. Thanks for the catch. When someone asks, "Can you do this?", sometimes its hard to figure out what the exact point of confusion is. Zen Faulkes, "Eager to Fight + Misdirection", 6 Apr 2009 - Q: 1) Can i play misdirection to Eager to fight?
A: Yes. Note, however, that because cost is determined by number of mandatory targets, changing the target is considered interfering with the costs. This means that the person playing Eager to Fight has the option of choosing not to pay, and discarding Eager to Fight with not effect.
This FAQ deals with Hired Killer rather than Eager to Fight, but the principles are the same: http://rules.l5r.com/FAQ#What_happens_i ... nt_cost.3F
Additional: See correction below this post. Zen Faulkes, "Eager to Fight + Misdirection", 6 Apr 2009 - Q: If you have one timing trigger of "after" something ends in a sequence and another timing trigger of "before" the next thing in a sequence begins, the "after" trigger to the first thing in the sequence comes first.
A: Citation Martin Lund, "Cartographers and Eager to Fight", 15 Jan 2008 - Q: “During a battle” includes both the Combat and Resolution Segments (added 5 August 2007).
A: Citation
"After Cavalry Maneuvers" is still before anything can be considered "During a Battle," because the Combat Segment has not begun and armies have not Engaged. Cartographers won't stop Eager to Fight. Martin Lund, "Cartographers and Eager to Fight", 15 Jan 2008 - Q: In this topic http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=59592 you stated that Eager to Fight would could not be used to add more units. Is that a reversal of this ruling http://www.alderac.com/forumold/viewtopic.php?t=37067 that allows the Water Dragon Exp 2 to assign more units after the cavalry movement segment? Or is there some difference between the Water Dragon Exp 2 and Eager to Fight that I am not seeing?
Thanks for your time.
A: No.
There's a difference between the printings of Retribution that you're not seeing.
Retribution used to say, "You cannot assign more than one unit normally during this attack."
Now it just says, "You can only assign one unit."
What a difference a word can make, huh? Martin Lund, "Retribution & Eager to Fight Part 2", 26 Jul 2007 - Q: If I play Retribution and attack with my one unit, can I then play Eager to Fight after the end of the maneuver segment to assign units to any battlefield with defending personalities?
Also would this work with Utaku Uzuki as well?
Thanks
A: No.
Eager To Fight specifically says that you "Assign" the units, rather than move them.
Retribution specifically says you may only assign one unit during the Attack Phase it creates.
Uzuki's ability has a similar prohibition, stating that you may only assign her.
This prevents both regular Maneuvers Segment assignment and any effect that says to assign units. Martin Lund, "Retribution & Eager to Fight", 24 Jul 2007
