Rules Q&A
- Q: Eastern Hub Port: If my opponent uses an Equip action on his turn, before he attacks me, that action being a Battle/Open for him, does that count as a Battle action?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_actions: "An Open/Battle ability creates an action with only one designator, as appropriate to the phase of the game it is announced." Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port and Action Phase Equip Type", 20 May 2009 - Q: I have a question pertaining to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60023&p=770354
Basically, I often have trouble explaining how this works to my opponents and I am wondering how to do this more clearly. Is saying "Equip is the action I take, and the effects of that action are that I pay the costs of my attachment and attach it to my personality, so when I announce 'Equip' is when you would have to play reinforce the gates" accurate?
Relevant texts:
Equip Limited: Any number of times per turn, target one of your Personalities: Attach a target attachment card from your hand to him (paying all costs).
Eastern Hub Port Equipping is a Battle/Open action for you. After the first Battle action resolves each turn that attached a card to one of your Personalities: You may take an additional Battle action.
Reinforce the gates Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Negate the action’s effects.
A: That is correct. Dan Jacobson, "Eastern Hub Port and Reinforce the Gates", 24 Mar 2009 - Q: Suppose I'm playing out of the Eastern Hub Port stronghold.
I have a personality outside of a battle and I attach Hidden Reserves to him. Does he get to move to the current battlefield before I get my additional action or do I have to take my additional action before the movement occurs?
A: Eastern Hub Port's trait triggers after the action that attached something resolves. Hidden Reserves' action doesn't finish resolving until after all its effects have activated, including the movement.
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_R#Resolve: "An action or trait... stops resolving when its sequence of effect activation has ended".
So, you receive your opportunity to take an additional action after the movement. Brook Cunningham, "Hidden Reserves + Eastern Hub Port", 24 Jul 2008 - Q: If I am using Eastern Hub Port and assign to attack, am I able to attach Panda Spirit as open action in battle since I would have already assigned?
A: Yes, for the reason you gave. Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port and Panda Spirit", 9 Jul 2008 - Q: Eastern Hub Port:
After the first Battle action resolves each turn that attached a card to one of your Personalities: You may take an additional Battle action.
Asako Takakazu xp:
Battle/Open: Even if he is not at the current battlefield: Attach a Spell to Takakazu from your hand (paying all costs). If you used this ability as a Battle action, you may immediately take an additional Battle action.
If Takakazu's action is my first Battle action of the turn that attached a card, do I get to take 2 consecutive actions after the attachment?
A: Yes.
See http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_A#Additional for more information. Alex Jones, "Eastern Hub Port and Asako Takakazu", 11 Apr 2008 - Q: * I know this ruling says the correct timing in case of a Eastern Hub Port vs Gate Guardsman "conflict" is: 1/ trigger stronghold, player will get an additional action; 2/ react with Gate Guardsman, player will take an additional action; 3/ play action granted by the stronghold (including reactions to it), 4/ play action granted by Gate Guardsman. But this all relies on the fact that the "Equip" Battle action is still considered "in progress"; is this correct?
A: That ruling is out-dated. It has been over-ruled and addressed several times already.
Taking an Additional Action simply becomes a Delayed Effect with the timing "after [Action X] resolves." Such actions take place before any new Triggered Effects or Reactions to "after [Action X] resolves" can be introduced since Delayed Effects happen at Timing Step D while Triggered Effects happen at Step E and Reactions at Step F.
Eastern Hub Port does not trigger while a Battle action is "in progress." You activate it in Step E after the Equip Action resolves and it immediately applies. Superior Strategist, however, does give an effect instruction during its "Resolve Effects" step to take an additional action - and it must be Delayed until "after Superior Strategist resolves." Martin Lund, "Another "additional action" question", 26 Nov 2007 - Q: Eastern Hub Port: Does the trait imply the first Battle action taken must be one that attaches a card to one of your Personality to gain the additional Battle action? Or can the trait be delayed to the second or later Battle action taken?
A: The latter. Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port Trait Clarification", 15 Nov 2007 - Q: What if I use Insight, look at the top 3 cards of my deck and then use a Manti's Strenght that was among that cards, after the Manti's Strenght resolves I would attach Pincers and Tail as reaction and then will return the other two cards from Insight that I haven't used to the top of my deck. In this case will I get an extra battle action?
A: No.
Insight does not attach a card as one of its effects.
The Mantis's Strength does not attach a card as one of its effects.
Pincers and Tail does not attach as a Battle action. Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port, Pincers and Tail and Insight", 14 Nov 2007 - Q: Taking the discusion back to the original answer, I don't see how the effect that lets you take an aditional battle action is a delayed effect. The triggers of both Eastern Hub Port's trait and Gate Guardsman's reaction have both the timing "after a battle action resolves". When the trigger happens there's no "action of the same designator in progress".
If what I said is right, Eastern Hub Port's effect would be from a triggered trait and the other would be from a reaction, so EHP's extra battle action would go first according to the comprehensive rules on timing.
Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance.
A: Yes. You're missing the fact that the ruling you've linked to is out-dated and got reversed by the Rules Team Lead prior to Gen-Con 07. Martin Lund, "Eastern Hub Port, delayed effect?", 12 Nov 2007 - Q: Player A attacks and assigns Naval Samurai XX. Player B defends with random Personality ZZ. Player A declares Naval Invasion...
A: There is no such thing in Samurai Edition rules. Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port and timing", 10 Nov 2007 - Q: and proceeds to take first battle action. Player A plays The Mantis's Strength to shoot the opponents personality ZZ. Player A reacts and attaches Pincers and Tail. Then Player A gains the extra action off the box.
A: No. The action that attached Pincers and Tail was not a Battle action; it was a Reaction.
When something says, "After an action does this effect," you look only at the printed effect of that action for that effect. You don't get to trawl through all the secondary and tertiary and quaternary effects made possible by Reactions and triggered traits. Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port and timing", 10 Nov 2007 - Q: According to here and here, the action granted by Eastern Hub Port interrupts the reaction window (occuring before reactions are taken).
1)Does this mean that all granted additional actions now interrupt? Can the reaction on Gate Guardsman now be used to interrupt the Strike Summit/Center/Base chain? or 2)Is Eastern Hub Port different due to the action being granted by a trait rather than by a reaction?
If the answer is #2, can we assume that all actions granted by traits will interrupt, but actions granted by reactions will not?
A: As per the Comprehensive Rules, there is currently no rule that prevents a Trait or Reaction that grants an additional opportunity to take a Battle Action in the "after resolving" timing window from immediately granting you that opportunity to act.
Delayed Effects (such as 'take another Battle action' instructions from the newly resolved Battle Action) always happen first.
Then you resolve Trait Triggers.
Then you have the opportunity to take Reactions.
Gate Guardsman could, in theory, interrupt the Strike Chain if the Gate Guardsman is controlled by the Active Player.
Incidentally, this issue was covered by RogerGS, the rules team lead, here several months ago. Martin Lund, "Eastern Hub Port, Gate Guardsman and Strike Chain", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: Whenever an effect grants an additional action while another action of the same designator is in progress, the timing of the additional action is delayed until after the current action resolves. This makes sure that Battle actions can not occur within other Battle actions, and so on. ["After" ADDED August 14 2007]
A: So Pincers and Tail and the additional Action from Doomed Intentions both share the same trigger.
According to the Comprehensive Rules on Timing, the Delayed Effects always come before the Triggered Traits, which always come before Reactions.
So the Additional Action from Doomed Intentions happens first.
This might prevent you from ever attaching Pincers and Tail, and consequently stop you from benefiting from Eastern Hub Port too. Martin Lund, "Doomed Intentions and/or Eastern Hub Port Pincers and Tail", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: In this post you indicate that the triggered trait on Eastern Hub Port occurs before the reaction on Gate Guardsman. OK.
The response to the question: "1b - If my previous question is right and during my next action Gate Guardsman is destroyed he'll never get the chance to react right?" was "Correct"
This directly conflicts with this post here. According to that post, the Battle action from Eastern Hub Port is a delayed effect. That would allow Gate Guardsman to take his reaction BEFORE the additional action from Eastern Hub Port is actually taken.
Which is correct?
A: The most recent ruling is correct until such time as changes are made in the Comprehensive Rules. The current ruling was what we settled on for Gen-Con, and upon further review we haven't had much cause to change things. Martin Lund, "RE:Eastern Hub Port & Pincers and Tail vs Gate Guardsman", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: I declare naval invasion and then use a battle action that targets my personality (ex: The Manti's Strenght) to kill the Ikoma Random ok? Well, then it's time to make reactions. As the active player my first reaction is to attach Pincers and Tail to my Yoritomo Random who have performed the battle action. When I do this what will happen?
1a - The reaction window is going to be interrupted by my stronghold effect and I will have the chance to take an additional battle action?
A: Triggered traits on cards are always taken before Reactions, so Eastern Hub Port's triggered trait will resolve before any Reactions to attaching Pincers and Tail can be played - if it were legally triggered in the first place.
Mantis's Strength does not attach anything, so it won't trigger Eastern Hub Port.
Pincer's and Tail's Reaction is not a Battle Action, so it won't trigger Eastern Hub Port either. Martin Lund, "Eastern Hub Port & Pincers and Tail vs Gate Guardsman", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: I was told that Eastern Hub Port's reaction can be used more than once per turn.
A: First, the stronghold does not have a Reaction. The word "Reaction" does not appear anywhere in the text.
Second, anything that is "first" cannot happen twice, by definition. Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port question", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: At the end of page 32 of the rulebook it reads like this "Equip - Limited: Any number of times per turn, target one of your personalities. Attach a target attachment card from your hand to him. (paying all costs)"
Assuming that Eastern Hub Port changes that to a battle/open action let's assume that I attack province 1 with my Yoritomo Randon and province 2 with my Tsuruchi Random. If I'm resolving at province 1 can I target and attach a card on my personality who is on province 2? I guess not because it doesn't have relevance. But I had to ask...
What if during a battle my Moshi Random with one follower is destroyed, can I use Fortified Camp reaction to bring the follower back to play attached to a personality who is not at the current battlefield?
Eastern Hub Port
Equipping is a Battle/Open action for you. After the first Battle action resolves each turn that attached a card to one of your Personalities: You may take an additional Battle action.
Fortified Camp
Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold, or produce 3 Gold if paying for an attachment. Reaction: After another player’s action destroys one of your attachment cards or it’s Personality: Attach the card to one of your target Personalities (paying all costs).
Thanks in advance!
A: Battle actions are restricted by the rules of Location and Presence. Reactions are not.
So, no, and yes. Chris Fuchs, "Eastern Hub Port and Fortified Camp", 10 Oct 2007 - Q: In reference to my previous thread about Eastern Hub Port and Misdirection.
Let's use the same example. I attack one province with many Naval personalities. The defender controls a courtier at home. During the first battle, after engaging, I use the Naval ability, targeting my Yoritomo Brian at the current battlefield. I play Eastern Hub Port so I announce the "Equip" action that Brian can and must perform. Before choosing targets for the effects of this action, my opponent plays Misdirection.
If I understand correctly, my opponent may not target a card which face is not revealed to him therefore he can never target an attachment card in my hand. His targeting fails to happen, my targeting has been replaced by the "instead" word so it doesn't happen, no card is targeted so the resolution of this Equip action does nothing. Then I've still got three other questions.
1) Have I correctly understood this previous ruling ? If not, please explain which mistakes I made please.
2) If I have only one card in hand, the Good Faith Rule implies that it must be an attachment card. Can my opponent target that one card according to this knowledge or does the previous ruling also apply there ?
3) If I have one The Desiccated in my discard pile, can my opponent target it and if yes, must he target it or does it depend on the number of cards in my hand (or on something else) ? I mean: can my opponent use the previous ruling to say he can't target a card in my hand, he is not compeled to target The Desiccated, so he lets his targeting fail so that the Equip action does nothing.
Thanks for your useful help.
A: 1) Correct.
2) I would say that if you only have one card in your hand, and no other targets to attach (such as The Dessicated,) then he must target the only card in your hand. (This specific answer is tentative and may change if the rest of the rules team disagrees with my logic.)
3) If he knows of a legal target, such as The Dessicated, he must target it. Chris Fuchs, "Eastern Hub Port and Misdirection and The Desiccated", 26 Sep 2007 - Q: In regards to: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61750&p=790211#p790211
I understand the ruling on that specific thread, but in this scenario:
Eastern Hub Port Equipping is a Battle/Open action for you. After the first Battle action resolves each turn that attached a card to one of your Personalities: You may take an additional Battle action.
If say my opponent is Mantis with EHP is attacking me I have defenders He declares Naval and uses EHP Battle action of equipping Two questions: a) Am I able to use reinforce the gates to negate the equipping? b) Am I able to let the equipping resolve then negate his additional battle action?
Currently after reading Reinforce the Gates: Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Negate the action’s effects. Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Target an unopposed unit there. Move the unit to a target battlefield where it would be opposed.
Since the reaction states before the defender's first normal opportunity to act or pass... and his additional battle action would still fall under that category of going before my action as a Defender... am I able to wait after he equips and then use an additional battle action and cancel that battle action after the equipping?
Thank you.
A: Yes.
The linked thread is saying that you can't use Reinforce to negate the actual Naval Reaction or Sneak Attack Reaction abilities, as Reinforce can only negate Battle actions. Chris Fuchs, "Reinforce the Gates vs. Naval Action + Equip + Action", 25 Sep 2007 - Q: So my question is this...
Let's say I attack my unicorn opponent. My Stronghold is Eastern Hub Port. My opponent defends against me with several personalities, and defends with Shinjo Isuke at another province.
I declare naval, and take my first action. I attach a follower or item to a naval personality at the opposed battlefield.
First question: Which happens first? My additonal battle action with Eastern Hub Port, or his reaction on Shinjo Isuke?
Second question: What if I also have a "purge the weak" attached to one of my personalities? What would the order be then?
Thanks so much, Evan
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Timing: "If two or more reactions, triggered traits, or rules procedures are triggered at the same point in time, follow this order from A through E to resolve their order."
"E. Apply any triggered traits on cards." That's Eastern Hub Port.
"F. Reactions may now be taken following an action round procedure." That's Shinjo Isuke and Purge the Weak. Zen Faulkes, "Shinjo Isuke vs Eastern Hub Port and Purge the Weak", 21 Sep 2007 - Q: When targeting is restricted based on its face-up features (such as Force, keyword, title, of card type), a player may not target a card whose face is not revealed to him or her, unless that card has been given such a feature by card or rules effects. [ADDED Sept 20 2007]
A: Also take note of http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_I-J#Instead_of Chris Fuchs, "Eastern Hub Port and Misdirection", 20 Sep 2007 - Q: If the new X is negated, or fails to happen for a reason other than negation (“do not” wording, absence of relevant game elements), the old Y doesn’t happen.
A: What this means is that if your opponent plays Misdirection and does not know what any legal targets in your hand are, his targeting fails to happen, and due to the "instead of" rules, you do not get to target your attachment either. Chris Fuchs, "Eastern Hub Port and Misdirection", 20 Sep 2007 - Q: In reference to my previous question, I'd like to ask another one about Equipping and Misdirection.
I am still playing Eastern Hub Port. At the current battlefield, I control two personalities : one Samurai and one Shugenja. My hand contains only one attachment card: a Brothers in Arms, which can only attach to a Samurai.
I announce that I am using the "Equip" ability. Before choosing targets for this action, my opponent plays Misdirection. He chooses this action is targeting my Shugenja. What happens ? I suppose the "Equip" action is negated but I'd like to know for sure.
What would happen if I had another attachment card in my hand that my Shugenja could legally attach but I didn't want to pay for, such as a very expensive Spell ? Would I be compelled to attach it if I can afford it ?
Thanks for your wise help.
A: The personality targeted by the equip action is targeted as a cost, which Misdirection is unable to alter, as it is only able to change the targeting of effects. Chris Fuchs, "Eastern Hub Port, Equipping and Misdirection", 17 Sep 2007 - Q: If I Equip as a Battle Action using Eastern Hub Port and my opponent legally plays Reinforce the Gates, must I have already payed the gold for the attachment?
A: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60023 Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port Equiping vs Reinforce the Gates", 15 Sep 2007 - Q: If I'm attacking with a Yoritomo Random at province 1 and with Tsuruchi Random at province 2 and I have the chance to go first on both battles (let's assume it's cause I have naval). If I resolve at province 1 and as my first battle action I attach a item on my Yoritomo peep there and chose not to make a aditional battle action. At province 2 if attach a card to my Tsuruchi peep can I now get a aditional battle action even if that were not my first battle action that attached something?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port and First Attachment.", 11 Sep 2007 - Q: Zen: In this rules answer, you seem to indicate that making use of Equipping satisfies one of the Battle actions necessary for Ring of Water.
What is the name of the card that produces this Action? Why is it not simply "Equip," from the Rulebook, which would then not satisfy Ring of Water?
A: Man, it is so past my bedtime.
Fixed. Zen Faulkes, "Clarification on Eastern Hub Port + Ring of Water", 4 Sep 2007 - Q: I declare an attack with my random naval peep and attach a item to him as a battle action. Do this battle count for one of the four battles I have to do for the Ring of Water?
A: No. Eastern Hub Port has a trait, not an action. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Ring of Water + Eastern Hub Port", 4 Sep 2007 - Q: If I announce a naval attack to use the action on Eastern Hub Port, but my opponent uses Reinforce the Gates to cancel the action am I right in assuming it does not go against my additional free action when/if I attach that follower later in the battle?
-Matt
A: If a card is not successfully attached, the trait on the stronghold will not trigger. Chris Fuchs, "Eastern Hub port question", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: Whenever an effect grants an additional action while another action of the same designator is in progress, the timing of the additional action is delayed until the current action resolves. This makes sure that Battle actions can not occur within other Battle actions, and so on.
A: I'll see if this can't be spruced up to be a little more clear on the issue. Martin Lund, "Eastern Hub Port VS Gate Guardsman", 3 Aug 2007 - Q: [OBH] A Samurai's Fury - After playing A Samurai's Fury - I equipped an attachment using the Mantis stronghold - Eastern Hub Port, can I still take an anditional Battle Action? Same with Superior Strategist and / or any Battle Action that provides additional Battle action like Formations
A: Yes, if the additional Battle action that A Samurai's Fury gives you then gives you more such additional actions (Mushin, anyone? 😉 ), you may take those too. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 22 Jun 2026
