Rules Q&A
- Q: If I target a "Tactician · Double Chi" Personality with the ability "Limited: draw a card" with an Eclipse what can the personality use?
A: "Limited: Draw a card" would not be usable.
The Tactical Action printed in the Rulebook could be used, since it is not on the Tactician's card - not be printing or by adding. It exists in the rulebook like the ability to lobby for the Imperial Favor. You simply target the Tactician when you use the Rulebook's Action. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 December 2004", 13 Dec 2004 - Q: Text of the card is this. Unique. Isawa's Last Wish Inexperienced. While this card is bowed all other players have the ability "Open: Once per turn, target a card other than a Wind, a Sensei, or a Ring. Remove it from the game."
Now here is the combo,
Eclipse.
Limited: Bow this Shugenja: Target a card. Until this Shugenja is unbowed or leaves play, actions on the target may not be used. This Shugenja may remain bowed.
What is to stop me, from bowing the Last Wish Inexperienced and then casting Eclipse on the Last Wish Inexperienced to prevent others from using the bowed Last wish ability?
A: Abilities bestowed / created - by - cards are not the same as abilities - on - cards. This is the same situation as the actions granted by Brutal Confrontation - they are neither on the cards nor played from the cards. The situation is similar with Yogo Towers as well - the bowing ability is on the Personalities, not the Stronghold.
The best example of the difference I can see is comparing Direct Assault and Archer Squad:
Direct Assault: Ability is on the card itself.
Archer Squad: Ability is - not - on the card itself.
To insulate the Last Wish from itself, you have to make it untargetable or make sure it straightens before anyone blows it up. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 November 2004", 16 Nov 2004
