Rules Q&A
- Q: 4)Is attaching the Imperial Standard considered a political action taken by the target? If so, and I Enough Talk the attachment, what happens in case of a tie?
A: No. It does not meet any of the first 4 "Performing" criteria on page 71. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 November 2004", 30 Nov 2004 - Q: Now I've always thought that the only effect of Enough Talk! is negating the action (or not negating, if the defender wins), but recently some of my friends told me that the duel was killing the looser. They said that negating the action is an additional effect, just like gaining honor from Iaijutsu Challenge, but since the card doesn't say what happens to the looser, it is a standard rulebook effect - death. Now all the duels which don't kill personality (Rage, Test of Might) have it written on the card, and Enough Talk! doesn't have such clause. Could anyone confirm or deny if Enough Talk! kills the looser?
A: Enough Talk doesn't specify anything else to do to the losing personality, so the default effect for being the losing personality in a duel applies: death. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 May 2004", 24 May 2004 - Q: Can you Enough Talk the abilities on the Winds?
A: If a Courtier Personality bows to pay the action's cost, yes. Otherwise no, since a Personality is not performing the Wind action. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 17 March 2004", 18 Mar 2004 - Q: If a personality tries to perform a political action and another player playes Enough Talk, does it target the original personality?
A: Yes. (It was for that reason why the Gold Edition targeting rules were implemented in the first place, among others.) Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 December 2003, Part 2", 3 Dec 2003 - Q: Can you use Keen Eye to cancel Enough Talk?
A: Only if the Enough Talk was triggered in the middle of another duel. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 December 2003", 1 Dec 2003 - Q: Enough Talk: Does this last sentence replace the normal consequences of losing a duel (ie death), or is it in addition to death of the loser?
A: In addition. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 28 November 2003", 28 Nov 2003 - Q: Does Enough Talk kill the loser or just negate the action?
A: The former. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 24 November 2003, Part 2", 25 Nov 2003 - Q: Doji Jotaro tries to Rhetoric my gain so I respond with Enough Talk! Now which duel should resolve first[?]
A: Actions in L5R resolve completely, one at a time (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 47). The last action was Enough Talk! That must finish first. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 8 September 2003", 9 Sep 2003 - Q: Say hypothetically my opponent bows Kakita Munemori to cancel one of my political actions taken by one of my personalities.
I have one of my samurai challenge Munemori with Enough Talk!. Munemori focuses. I strike and play Poisoned Weapons. Munemori wins the duel (so the cancellation goes through) but dies immediately after the duel due to Poisoned Weapons.
Do I have an opportunity to play a second Enough Talk! to challenge Munemori and attempt to cancel his political action (before Munemori dies)? Is is still a legal play, since a personality is still taking a political action (although the personality is dead) which is the trigger for Enough Talk!?
A: Munemori dies too soon for you to React with another Enough Talk! He is dead and cannot be challenged. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 April 2003", 29 Apr 2003 - Q: I want to know specifically with regards to The Wind's Truth as if the personality is indeed "taking" the action and not just "performing", they could be challenged via Enough Talk!. I would like to know the same with regards to lobbying for the Imperial Favour.
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 September 2002", 6 Sep 2002 - Q: This question relates to another one I've been thinking about lately, with regards some of the new cards.
To use and old card with similar wording to what I'm thinking of for the question -
Agasha Tamori (relevant text) - 2Chi - Has a 3C bonus when casting spells
If he is casting a spell that is interrupted by Enough Talk or Witch Hunt (or any other means I cannot think of atm) that forces him into a duel while attempting to cast the spell does he keep his Chi bonus?
A: If the interrupting reaction is worded to happen "before" his spellcasting action, he won't have the bonus. If it triggers "when" or "after" he casts a spell, he has the bonus. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 July 2002", 26 Jul 2002 - Q: Can a Veteran Samurai be targeted with For The Empire? Can a Veteran Samurai say "Enough Talk!"?
A: No and no. Followers are not legal targets for challenges (giving or receiving) or moving into duels. Dueling can only happen between Personalities without explicit card text otherwise. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2002", 9 Apr 2002 - Q: 2) If i play this card and am at a higher honor than my opponent on my next turn, if i lobby can they play cards like Enough Talk! to intervene?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 8 September", 11 Sep 2001 - Q: Then the question becomes: Does it target the card creating the duel, your personality entering the duel, or both?
Enough Talk? It targets both personalities, the one that you pick to challenge the offending talker, and the offending talker themselves.
Actually I thought most of the e-mail was about Shosuro tech... At least that's what I was talking about. ;)
A: Shosuro Tech also targets both personalities. It's lucky for me that, although the cards in question were different, the answer remains the same. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 23rd", 23 Jul 2001 - Q: Can a Yodin Sensei player play Enough Talk! and Overconfidence now?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 6-9 July 2001", 19 Jul 2001 - Q: Am I correct in thinking that most reactions now target? Does A Test of Courage target the personality it is played upon? Does Enough Talk target the samurai making the challenge and the personality performing the political action?
A: See above. If it affects or involves a card in play in any way, it targets. Both of the above situations target (Test of Courage by explicit rules text, though). Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 18th", 18 Jul 2001 - Q: Do the Gold Edition rules regarding whether an action is targetted or not cause Overconfidence and Enough Talk! to be targetted actions now, thus making them unplayable with Yodin Sensei?
A: Yes to both. Targeting is now pretty much the default for actions. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 July 2001", 12 Jul 2001 - Q: If there is a tie in the duel created by Enough Talk, does the political action succeed?
A: No. A tie is a loss for both players. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 5 July 2001", 6 Jul 2001 - Q: There's a rulebook definition (Spirit Wars rulebook, p. 49) more recent than this FAQ entry. To paraphrase, a card performs an action if either the action is printed on that card or the card bows as a cost of the action.
Gift of Fealty does not fit either of these cases. It is not performed by the Personality. Enough Talk! cannot be played.
Just so you know my feelings on the matter, as well as my reasoning: Darn!
I think your reasoning is dangerous. "He's mine!" is performed by the personality who's being replaced in the duel.
A: No it's not. The bowing is not a cost. Jeff Alexander, "replies to the 6 June digest", 10 Jun 2001 - Q: Can I "Enough Talk!" a Gift of Fealty?
Guess so. Had to go way back to the old FAQ for this, but "...generally any targetted card that's not purely detrimental is considered performed."
A: There's a rulebook definition (Spirit Wars rulebook, p. 49) more recent than this FAQ entry. To paraphrase, a card performs an action if either the action is printed on that card or the card bows as a cost of the action.
Gift of Fealty does not fit either of these cases. It is not performed by the Personality. Enough Talk! cannot be played. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 28 May 2001", 3 Jun 2001 - Q: Repine, James writes: Can I bow my Stronghold to buy the 10G Personality, then, once my opponent declines to Kolat Bookkeep me, bow the two Jade Works for the rest (and, if KB is played, I'll then bow the Jade Works for something else)? Or do I have to first try to meet the full cost, and then see whether something happens?
You have to announce how you are paying for the personality in full and then see if your opponent does something. Also note, if you can fulfill the cost another way (i.e. bowing other holdings), you may do so in order to cover the cost of the card in question.
For more complicated questions about such timing, one could add corrupt holdings, an Honor Requirement on the Personality, and various tricks like The Wind's Truth with possible reactions to it - basically, the question is, can the cost payment be lumped into one big trigger for possible reactions, or is there a sequence?
Can you be a little more specific? If you bow 2 corrupt gold producing holdings, they are separate honor losses..... (not sure what else you mean).
Well, if I bow a corrupt Holding, that starts a "lose Honor" trigger. When that happens, Reactions can start happening (Imperial Favor, The Wind's Truth). Since The Wind's Truth is Political, that can start duels (Enough Talk!). Someone may end up dying as a result of this, which means lots of things can happen, including initially uninvolved people dying (if someone loses a Personality of a Clan they have the Sword for, the Sword-bearer loses Chi, and this may result in him dying - possibly dishonorably).
An incredible lot of things can happen when someone bows a corrupt holding. When more than one such holding is bowed, it can be even worse - so I'd like to know what the precise timing of this would.
A: It's just like any other Reaction chain. As soon as there is a legal trigger, the whole chain starts. Assuming infinite hand size, it would concevably be possible for a whole game to be won or lost in the Reaction chain following the bowing of one corrupt holding, without ever reaching the resolution of the action the holding was bowed to pay for. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 26th", 27 Jan 2001 - Q: Let's say one of my magistrates performs a Political Action, and i react with Magistrate's Stipend to increade my magistrate's Chi. Then my oponent reacts with Enough Talk! and challenges my personality. Does the magistrate have the chi bonus during the duel?
A: Yes, he does. Brook Cunningham, "Magistrate's Stipend and Enough Talk!", 14 Sep 2011 - Q: Wouldn't Enough Talk! still count for Ring of Void?
A: I don't see anything in the previous posts that says it would not. Indeed, the first post says it would count. Zen Faulkes, "Enough Talk! and Ring of the Void", 2 Mar 2011 - Q: This question came up last week in a game.
If a player has 2 characters, one in a battlefield and the other at home. His opponent uses a political action in the current battlefield. Can he use Enough Talk! to duel the personality in the current battlefield with his personality at home? Is that play legal or he must duel it with his personality in the current battlefield?
Thanks,
Javier
A: Yes.

There is no rule that participants in a duel be in the same location.
Reactions are not subject to the Rules of Presence or Relevance. Zen Faulkes, "Enough Talk! - Outside of Battle", 17 Dec 2010 - Q: As the performer of Arranged Guilt is destroyed as a cost, does Enough Talk have someone to duel? Can it be used to stop it's effects?
A: Enough Talk can be legally announced and played, but will have no effects, as no challenge can be issued and the duel cannot be won. Zen Faulkes, "Arranged Guilt + Enough Talk", 11 May 2010 - Q: A challenge does not happen if its two Personalities are controlled by the same player, or if either card in the duel is not a Personality.
A: The effects fail to happen if you choose a personality you control to challenge, and "Enough Talk" is discarded without effect. Dan Jacobson, "Enough Talk! question", 25 Dec 2009 - Q: Does Enough Talk! target?
A: Only your performing samurai, not the other Personality. It would say explicitly if it did. Brook Cunningham, "Enough Talk! vs. Targeting", 10 Oct 2009 - Q: Effects may substitute one Personality for another in a challenge or duel. This does not change the original targeting of the challenge. The new Personality carries out the remaining steps instead of the original one, goes through resolution and takes the consequences of winning or losing.
So does that mean to initiate any duel in general requires targeting?
A: No. It just means that IF a duel targets a Personality, and an effect specifically substitutes another Personality for him, that doesn't change that targeting. But the part you highlighted doesn't give or imply implicit targeting in duels. Brook Cunningham, "Enough Talk! vs. Targeting", 10 Oct 2009 - Q: *Can I play Deflection to redirect the Enough Talk! to duel a different one of my personalities? (I assume no since Enough Talk! doesn't target)
*Can I play Enough Talk! to react to an opponent playing Deflection? (I also assume no since Deflection doesn't have any personalities performing it).
A: You assume correctly in both cases. The answer to both questions is "no". Brook Cunningham, "Deflection vs Enough Talk!", 12 Sep 2009 - Q: Regarding these two separate rulings: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=78825 viewtopic.php?f=59&t=79016
It seems that in order for one to be correct, the other must not be correct. Can someone please explain the difference to me? Thanks
A: The difference is that in one, the Rules Team member answering it made an error.
The one making the mistake? That'd be me. Hi.
Correction will be made by time you read this. Zen Faulkes, "Asako Misako + Enough Talk", 10 Sep 2009 - Q: If a player had two Enough Talk!, could he play one on each target, or would the first remove the trigger for the second?
A: Assuming the player with the two Enough Talk! wins the first duel, the former.
The action is still about to resolve, even though all its effects are nullified. (Fixed incorrect answer.) Zen Faulkes, "Asako Misako + Enough Talk", 9 Sep 2009 - Q: Asako Misako: I target my shugenja in the current battlefield, and my opponent plays Enough Talk. Who can he target?
A: Either one, but just one. Zen Faulkes, "Asako Misako + Enough Talk", 9 Sep 2009 - Q: Can "Enough Talk!" be used to duel one of your own personalities?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Challenges_and_duels: "A challenge fails and has no effect if its two Personalities are controlled by the same player(.)" Zen Faulkes, "Enough Talk to self duel?", 24 Jun 2009 - Q: If an opponent uses a political action in battle, and I want to play Enough Talk!, does my Samurai have to be in the battle? The Rules of Presence and Relevance don't apply to Reactions as far as I can tell, and the card doesn't specify.
Sample scenario where it came up:
-Opponent has one attacking unit in an undefended province, resolves it first
-I attempt to Refugees the attacking unit, and my opponent bows his courtier using the Right Hand Wind to negate the movement
At this point I want to play Enough Talk! as a reaction to the political reaction taken, though I have no Samurai in the battle - but I do have one at home, unbowed. Is this legal?
A: No.
Your understanding of the situation is pretty solid. The card doesn't specify that the Personalities involved need to be anywhere in particular, so they can be anywhere in play and still duel.
Your unbowed Samurai at home and beat up his Courtier at his home, even during a Battle.
- Marty Lund
Deputy Rules Monkey Zen Faulkes, "Enough Talk! in a battle", 11 Apr 2005 - Q: The rulebook says: In a standard duel, the loser dies.( DE p89). If a card gives an alternate outcome e.g "Dishonor the loser" then that effect changes the outcome for both parties to the duel. But what about "Enough Talk!" Can your oponent's personality die to "Enough Talk"?
If not, if a card intended to do something in addition to destroying the loser it would have to say "If X wins, destroy the loser, do something else". But X would still be destroyed for losing. Is this correct?
And finally, if that's true, it seems to me that Concede Defeat would not save the opponent in this duel, but would save X.
And it seems to me that the answers to these questions should shed some light on Doji Reju.
Thanks
gh
A: "Destroy the loser" (card text). Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Not About EomE REJU xp3 but maybe relevent to it", 15 Mar 2005 - Q: Zen Faulkes wrote:

"Destroy the loser" (card text). Yes.
I don't see that on the card text:
Reaction: Before another player's target Personality performs a Political action, target one of your unbowed Samurai Personalities to issue an unrefusable challenge to the other Personality. Resolve the duel before the Political action. If your Samurai wins, negate the Political action's effects.
Are you saying it destroys the loser anyway, by the rulebook effect, since nothing overrides the rulebook effect?

In sentence one, you write, X wins. In sentence 2, you write "X loses. You can see how this makes it difficult to answer anything.
You'll have to forgive me, I studied economics, and have never been able to writ clearly since. To restate in general terms:
If a card that triggers a duel gives a result of winning, but not of losing, does the rulebook effect still destroy the loser?
Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks
gh
I don't see that on the card text(.)
