Rules Q&A
- Q: With the wording on Relentless Assualt, where it states that it cannot target a personality that has been in a battle during the resolution phase of a battle that turn, what about a personality sent home via Torrential Rain, or from an Entrapping Terrain. Are they eligible to be Relentlessed, into a different battle, since they one they were in was ended, but did not resolve?
A: They are eligible. (And you mean Tireless Assault, not Relentless.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 April 2003", 29 Apr 2003 - Q: If Akodo Hakuseki has an ancestor attached, does this mean he gets to negate Torrential rain and Entrapping Terrain?
A: No. These end the battle. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2003", 9 Apr 2003 - Q: Does 'A Test of Courage' effectively negate 'Entrapping Terrain' - that is, does ET try to send you home before resolution, but ToC stops this and lets you proceed (with all your units) to resolution?
A: Reactions to units leaving a battle cannot be played in response to a battle that ends early, without resolution. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 April 2003", 9 Apr 2003 - Q: This is a question on a couple of cards my friends and I have had some trouble agreeing on the actual effect of the cards.
Entrapping Terrain is rather specific, its a delayed terrain that ends the battle without resolution. The battle action segment still happens normally, so it is easily understood.
Flattery and Torrential Rain however, are not as specific. They both "end the battle without resolution" but they are not as specific on when the effect takes place.
A: That means it happens when the action is taken. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 February 2003", 6 Feb 2003 - Q: Entrapping Terrain
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 June 2002", 11 Jun 2002 - Q: I always thought that if a personality went home from a battle unless it was stated otherwise (Entrapping Terrain, Flattery, Bridged Pass) he was bowed.
A: This was true *VERY* briefly. It hasn't been for almost a year. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 July 2001", 11 Jul 2001 - Q: From the archive under "Resolution Segment": (Note: Terrains resolve in the Battle Action segment, not the Resolution Segment.) [JA, 14 February 2001]
From the Spirit Wars Rulebook pg. 43: A Terrain's effects resolve after all players consecutively pass during the Battle Action Segment. Players cannot take actions in a battle after a Terrain resolves; at that point, the Battle Action Segment ends. Any Terrain in play is automatically destroyed immediately after the Resolution Segment.
Even though Entrapping Terrain says "the battle ends without resolution," I would think that this only means that you don't count up force to see which army wins and so forth. There HAS to be a resolution segment at that battle, otherwise Entrapping Terrain would never be destroyed, because, according to the rulebook, Terrains are detroyed immediately after the resolution segment.
A: They're destroyed after the battle ends, whether it resolves or not. (This has been addressed in the Gold rulebook.) Entrapping Terrain is not the only card that can end a battle immediately; there are all sorts of terrains that could get "stuck" in play when something like Torrential Rain goes off if only a true resolution could destroy them. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for late February 2001", 10 Mar 2001 - Q: Hi all,
Here are a few questions for which I'm not sure of the answer, or for which a friend would like an official word - I'm not good enough for him, which is OK with me.
* Sorrow's Path: destroys cards "immediately before the resolution segment". Does this mean that, if the resolution segment doesn't happen [say, because of an Entrapping Terrain], it doesn't destroy anything? [my belief: yes]
A: Yes. Unfortunately for me, this came up in a tournament last week, and I wound up losing the game because my Sorrow's Path/Entrapping combo didn't do anything. :( Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 26th", 26 Nov 2000
