Rules Q&A
- Q: A recent example is the following: I have Akodo Kurogane and 5 other lion clan personalities in play, My opponent has 3 crab personalities defending his province. His first action is to announce Calm Before Death, which has 1 required target and 1 optional target in my army. The concundrum occurs here. He wishes to target Kurogane with the required targeting and hypothetically someone else with the optional targeting. I have chugo seido in play (and unbowed) do I have to react with it before optional targets are chosen?
A: I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but I hope the following helps.
There are two options for when you'd wish to trigger Chugo Seido. You may either trigger it during the Required Targeting Step upon his choice to target Kurogane as the required target to change that targeting, or upon his next choice during the same Step to target a second Personality, if you want to change THAT targeting. Brook Cunningham, "Required and Optional Targeting Timing", 24 Jul 2010 - Q: Can you use Kurogane navally with a naval personality?
A: Mod nudge: Please use complete card titles when asking questions. I'm going to assume you mean Akodo Kurogane here, and modify the thread title accordingly.
Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Kurogane and naval", 3 Jan 2010 - Q: I was told recently that only one card performing an action must be naval in order to use a naval action(.)
A: For the record, and so that you don't have to rely on heresay, the actual rule is here: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_The_Player#Player_abilities Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Kurogane and naval", 3 Jan 2010 - Q: I attach a Sampan to Akodo Mokichi to give Mokichi naval. I attack a province and my opponent defends. Akodo Kurogane is in my army. I declare a naval invasion. Can I bow Akodo Mokichi with Akodo Kurogane's battle action as part of the naval action?
A: I assume you mean under CE Rules? I'm slightly thrown, because "declare Naval Invasion" is not a CE concept.
Ok, yes. The OBH Naval Engage says that the "first action" granted by it must be performed by a card in the the Naval unit, and one of the definitions of "performing" is being targeted in the constraints block, which does happen in Kurogane's action, so both Kurogane and Mokichi "perform" it, allowing you to use it. EDIT: Slight technical correction; overall answer unchanged. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 23 Oct 2023
