Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Eternal Halls of the Shiba 5PS 4GP 7FH Reaction: Once per turn, after one of your cards successfully casts a Kiho and you discard the Kiho, add the Kiho to your hand. Then discard a card from your hand. You may take this action once per game for each copy of each Kiho." [MRP, Gold Edition, 1 July 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 146
- May not retrieve a kiho that goes somewhere besides the discard pile (e.g., Blessings of Isawa). [Stronghold text] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 146
- May retrieve Kiho Terrains immediately following their destruction. [2/5/2000] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 146
- All existing alignments are kept. [DW, personal correspondence, 2/13/99] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 2
- Your human shugenja Followers also gain the trait. [REVERSAL] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 2
- Erratum: Eternal Halls of the Shiba no longer grant the Phoenix Clan trait to all of your Shugenja at the start of the game. [MRP] The Imperial Herald, Issue 17, p. 41
- Q: If a kiho is cancelled, can I still attach it to a Personality with Blessings of Isawa or keep it in my hand with the Eternal Halls of the Shiba? A: No and no. It needs to resolve for either of those to trigger. The Imperial Herald, Issue 14, p. 45
- Q: Do the Eternal Halls of the Shiba, Creating the Monkey Clan, or The Agasha Join the Phoenix remove any existing clan alignments? A: No. The Imperial Herald, Issue 11, p. 26
- Q: The Eternal Halls of the Shiba says 'You cannot use this ability twice with the same Kiho.' Is that by title or per card? What about Naka Kuro Exp., who 'cannot perform any kiho more than once per turn?' A: The Eternal Halls is per card. Naka Kuro is by title. The Imperial Herald, Issue 11, p. 26
Rules Q&A
- Q: Just a few questions regarding the timing of this card, and the timing of reactions.
Basically, trying to determine exactly when a Kiho is in the discard pile to set off the Eternal Halls of the Shiba reaction to bring it back.
A: It goes to the discard pile as soon as you play it. But notice that you have to wait until it's in the discard pile AND it has been successfully cast. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 May 2003", 10 May 2003 - Q: Celestial Alignment Until your next turn, Shugenja Personalities need not bow to create Spell effects or use innate abilities. Until your next turn, no Shugenja may create a given a Spell effect more than once or use a given innate ability more than once.
Eternal Halls of the Shiba Reaction: Once per turn, after one of your cards successfully casts a Kiho and you discard the Kiho, add the Kiho to your hand. Then discard a card from your hand. You may take this action once per game for each copy of each Kiho
Dark Allies Rulebook, page 30. A Kiho is actually an Action card, although it produces a Spell effect.
Question: I have a Shugenja in play. As an Open action, my Shugenja casts "Facing you Devils" without bowing, thanks to the Celestial Alignment. I use the Stronghold ability to take the Kiho back to my hand once it has been resolved. Can the same Shugenja cast the same "Facing your Devils" again ?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 May 2003", 6 May 2003 - Q: The question comes from a timing boggle with Eternal Halls of the Shiba and Facing your Devils. When exactly can the Phoenix player recycle his Kiho ? Before the challege ? Between the acceptance or refusal of the challenge and the start of the duel ? When the duel is over ?
A: Before the challenge. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 April 2002", 27 Apr 2002 - Q: 4.) The Eternal Halls of the Shiba CANNOT be used to retain a Kiho if the stronghold is bowed.
A: True. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 23rd", 23 Nov 2000 - Q: Correct me if I'm wrong but the original wording on the card said all shugenja swear fealty to you (which got errate'ed to just being unaligned shugenja). Oracle has a completely gotten rid of that. When did that change?
A: I'm not aware of it ever changing to "only Unaligned".
It was errata'd to remove the trait entirely during the Jade arc itself (note the complete lack of the trait on its Soul of the Empire story-backed reprint), which was maintained on its GE MRP. Brook Cunningham, "Eternal Halls of the Shiba", 31 Aug 2013 - Q: Regarding this : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=75159
The Tracking rule ( http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule ) says : “Memory” of the status of individual cards ends when the card enters a deck or a hand, or otherwise becomes both face-down and out of play (such as after a card in the deck or hand is shown). This includes dishonorable status, ongoing effects, and whether or not an ability has been used.
So the kiho can be reused the same turn, as the moment it goes up to the hand, it loose memory of having being played that turn.
Am I wrong in my reasoning anywhere?
A: No, you are correct.
If you recall, this Stronghold was only legal back in the heady days of no-OPT-action-Rule. So, this interaction is as it has always been. Brook Cunningham, "Eternal Halls of the Shiba", 11 Apr 2009 - Q: Eternal Halls of the Shiba says:
Reaction: Once per turn, after one of your cards successfully casts a Kiho and you discard the Kiho, add the Kiho to your hand. Then discard a card from your hand. You may take this action once per game for each copy of each Kiho.
Once the Kiho is back in your hand, does the stronghold restriction on how many times I can do this still affect the Kiho?
[Mod edit: Thread title. -ZF]
A: Yes, you are still limited, because the text restricts what you as a player can do, not change anything about the card. Zen Faulkes, "Eternal Halls of the Shiba", 11 Apr 2009
