Rulings
- If the caster gets Chi bonuses for casting spells/kiho, they apply to the duel. [DW, email, 11 November 1998] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 56
- If cast by a monk or shugenja Follower, treat it as a Personality for the duration of a duel. If it has 0 Chi it dies immediately and the duel is aborted without conclusion. [DW, personal correspondence, 11/10/98] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 26
Rules Q&A
- Q: The cards at the crux of the issue are Facing Your Devils and Superior Stance. The short version of the question is this: is the discarding of cards to refuse Facing Your Devils a cost or an effect of the refusal?
A: Cost. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: Is it in the discard pile immediately after being played, or after it's effects have resolved? If it's the former, I can play Facing Your Devils on someone (and if they accept) bring it back to my hand and in theory have it available to focus with if I so desire? If it's the latter it would not come back to my hand until after the duel's effects resolve.
A: By past rulings, the entire duel is an effect of Facing Your Devils, so you'd have to wait until it ended. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 May 2003", 10 May 2003 - Q: 1. Blessed Dojo + Facing Your Devils.. Does the Shugenja targeted with BD get the +2 Chi bonus during the Duel created by FYD?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 March 2003", 25 Mar 2003 - Q: Regarding Chiuchi and his bonus for being bowed ...

More than 6.
Can he Wind's Truth a 6pt honour change?
A: No, since in this case his Chi needs to be at least equal to the change to start casting the Kiho. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 December 2002", 14 Dec 2002 - Q: Second question on Hoshi Chuichi. Relevent text: Chuichi gains +2F/+2C while bowed. If Chuichi is casting Kihos whose effects depend upon his stats (ie. Chasing Osano-Wo or Facing Your Devils) do we check his stats before or after he bows?
A: If bowing is the cost, then after, since costs come before effects. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 December 2002", 12 Dec 2002 - Q: ie. for Facing Your Devils would my opponent have to discard more than 4 focus worth of fate cards to refuse (4 being Chuichi's Chi before he bowed to cast Facing Your Devils) or more than 6?
A: More than 6. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 December 2002", 12 Dec 2002 - Q: May a Shugenja in a battle being resolved use Facing Your Devils to challenge a Personality not in a battle at all? How about a Personality in a different battle?
A: During a battle, that Kiho can be used if either the caster or the target is in the current battle. This is a straightforward application of the Rule of Relevance. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 September 2002", 25 Sep 2002 - Q: A shugenja receives a chi bonus from Blessed Dojo or Doji Akiko before casting Facing Your Devils, the challenged controller accepts the duel. My question is how high is the chi of the caster for the purposes of the duel - his printed value or does it include the chi bonus form BD or Akiko.
A: The duel is an effect of the kiho, so any Chi bonuses the caster gets for kihos lasts for the entire duel. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11-12 September 2002", 13 Sep 2002 - Q: Can you use this ability from the fief, supposing you have another unit/s in the battle?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 March 2002", 13 Mar 2002 - Q: A question recently came up over Towers of Isawa Castle and whether the restriction on the card refers to individual spell effects or individual copies of cards that produce spell effects. We've got two different schools of thought on this, and each appears to be valid....
Towers of Isawa Castle reads: Fortification. May only bew brought into play by a member of Phoenix Clan. Shugenja do not need to bow to produce spell effects or innate abilities during a battle at this Province. No spell or innate ability may be used more than once during any one battle at this Province.
We dug through the accumulated rulings and basically came to one main question:
Does the retriction on use of spells and innate abilities work in the same way as has been ruled Naka Kuro exp does? According to the AR, Since Naka Kuro refers to the spell effect specifically, a kiho with the same name can be used a second time only if the kiho can be used to produce an entirely different effect. If, for instance, the Phoenix player has two different copies of Facing Your Devils, the second copy could not be used until a later turn because it produces the same effect as the first cast.
A: Just like Naka Kuro, Towers of Isawa Castle checks the effect of the spell or innate ability. You cannot use the same spell more than once for the same effect, or the same innate ability from different copies of the same Shugenja. Using a spell card more than once to produce different effect should still be legal, though (ex. Emergence of the Masters). Jeff? Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 26th", 27 Jan 2001 - Q: Will the ongoing effect from my opponent's Scorpion Wall is Finished force him to accept my Facing Your Devils' challenges?
Scorpion Wall is Finished: Until the game ends, other players' actions will not discard cards from your hand, and after a player has resolved two actions that put cards in his hand in one phase, no more cards will be put into his hand that phase.
Facing Your Devils (Oracle): Battle/Open: Bow your unbowed performing Monk or Shugenja and target a Personality: Your Personality challenges the target. The Personality's controller may discard cards with a total Focus Value greater than the challenger's Chi; if he did, his Personality may refuse. Destroy the duel's loser.
A: If your opponent has resolved The Scorpion Wall is Finished, he will fail to discard cards to the effect of Facing Your Devils, and so must accept the challenge. Alex Jones, "Facing Your Devils (again) and Scorpion Wall is Finished", 28 Aug 2012 - Q: Hi,
In the EE Comprehensive rules, I can no longer find a reference under "Challenges and Duels" that restricts the challenger to being unbowed. It seems (my guess) that this was relegated to specific card text, as per the Oracle text for the classical Iaijutsu Challenge:
"Limited: Choose your performing unbowed Personality and target another player's Personality: Your Personality challenges him. He may refuse; if he did, dishonor him and his controller loses 7 Honor. The winner's controller gains 5 Honor. Destroy the duel's loser."
My question then is: can a bowed personality who ignores the cost of bowing to perform Kiho strategies (e.g. Shinsei, Togashi Satsu experienced 1 through 3, etc.) perform a Facing Your Devils, given the Oracle text on that Kiho is:
"Battle/Open: Bow your performing Monk or Shugenja and target a Personality: Your Personality challenges the target. The Personality's controller may discard cards with a total Focus Value greater than the challenger's Chi; if he did, his Personality may refuse. Destroy the duel's loser."
With no specific reference to the challenging personality being unbowed?
A: The lack of "unbowed" in Facing Your Devils was an oversight on my part, sorry. It was from the era of implied targeting, where you implicitly targeted your performer, and while not from an era with implicit need for a challenger to be unbowed, it WAS from an era when your own bowed cards were never legal targets.
